10 greatest anime protagonist of all time
Top anime protagonist of all time (Image via Crunchyroll)
When we think about the greatest anime protagonists of all time, we often think about strength but true greatness goes beyond power. These characters left a lasting mark not just because of what they did, but because of how deeply they connected with us.
Whether they made us laugh, cry, or rethink life itself, their journeys became a part of ours.
Ten iconic anime characters that made their mark in memorable ways
From Goku to Nana, these unforgettable protagonists didn't just define anime, they defined an entire generation. Here's why fans still carry their stories years later.
The reason shonen anime is special is due to Goku (Dragon Ball). He always has a smile on his face, is blamelessly youthful and looks forward to new experiences.
He fights when he can but not out of hatred, but for fun and as a means to defend people. Millions of children saw him as a role model because of his strong friendship and eager mind.
Naruto Uzumaki (Naruto) began with nothing other than his big dreams. Being lonely, having mean reasons and being ignored didn't stop him. He used kindness and his own determination to overcome his pain. His past doesn't have to determine the direction of his future.
Even though Monkey D. Luffy (One Piece) is always wild and laughing, he's actually quite faithful and fearless. He's not driven by the desire for power, but only wants personal and collective freedom. His example encourages us to be happy and willing to help those important to us.
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood shows Edward Elric, who possesses great talent in alchemy and lots of determination. His brother's presence and Miura's wish to do the right thing make you relate easily to him.
Edward shows that the strongest move a person can take is to own their shortcomings and deal with the things they do.
Many people are drawn to Usagi Tsukino (Sailor Moon) because she is awkward, feeling and sweet. She points out that being soft doesn't mean you lack strength. The love and companionship she experiences allow her to help the world avoid danger.
In the Ghost in the Shell story, Motoko Kusanagi is calm, organized and well-thought-out. Like many others in her field, she questions what it is to be human and to live. Both courage and depth can be seen in Motoko when everything around her is unfamiliar and dangerous
At the beginning, Eren Yeager (Attack on Titan), seeks revenge and is set on fighting, but later turns into a fascinating character in shonen.
Because his morals are vague, the audience is forced to consider what freedom actually includes and how much they would pay for it.
According to her series, Madoka Magica, Homura Akemi gains most of her strength by loving and enduring her own suffering. Each time she tries to help her friend, her worries grow so much she acts even more desperately. It's truly sad, but stealthy, how effective she is.
Gon Freecss (Hunter x Hunter) looks like a simple person, but it's shocking how deeply he feels.
Mr. Underhill manages rage, while always being kind and brave. Gon stands for the way growing up involves dealing with the beautiful and the cruel things around us.
Nana Osaki (Nana) isn't taking on monsters, she's dealing with real-life issues. She handles love, sadness and heartache as a tough and passionate musician. Her experience speaks to us by showing that some heroes are simply trying to keep going.
These characters didn't just entertain us, they taught us, healed us, and challenged us. In their struggles, we saw our own. And in their triumphs, we found hope.

One Piece reveals Imu's terrifying powers: Here's everything we know so far
The mysterious big bad of the entire world finally takes center stage—and fans are shook. If you're not a diehard One Piece fan, you may be unfamiliar with Imu. In the fictional universe of this popular anime and manga series, Imu is the hooded person who runs the World Government from behind the scenes. Introduced during the Levely Arc, Imu has only just recently begun to display their true abilities and the current manga chapters are showing just how horrifying Imu can be. So, in Chapter 1150 of the One Piece manga, the creator Eiichiro Oda has finally been able to show us just how disturbing the powers of Imu truly are. Some of these powers are so unbelievably powerful, they can compare to the most powerful and infamous Devil Fruits known to exist. Whether you're a One Piece veteran or just getting your feet wet, here's an easily digestible, spoiler-free guide to every power Imu has displayed thus far. 1. Possession: Imu can take over other people's bodies Imu has the ability to completely take over the bodies of her followers, most notably the God's Knights. When she commandeers a knight named Gunko, she maneuvers the body like a puppet but much more thoroughly and terrifyingly than anything we've seen so far. This is a departure from Devil Fruits such as Doflamingo's, which control motion. Imu's control is absolute—mind, body, and soul. 2. Demon form: Imu transforms into a monster In an early scene, when Imu takes over a person's body, the victim's transformation is horrifying. Read on, and get your creative ideas boiling to include wings, tail, horns—the true demon aesthetic. Her devotees literally transform into these giant beastly shapes. Whether a part of this transformation suggests the legacy of an old race or lost force, like a Magellan-esque looking Magellan, the toxic jailer from the draw Impel Down arc. 3. Conqueror's haki so strong it crushes giants Haki is already one of the most powerful forces in the One Piece universe, but Imu raises the bar even higher. When she enters the battlefield, her Conqueror's Haki is described as so powerful that it automatically takes out Giant warriors. That even the very best of the best fighters, like Shanks, have never been shown doing it…until now. 4. Summoning weapons out of thin air Geared up, in the heat of battle, Imu conjures a giant gun and dagger out of thin air. This is deeper than Devil Fruits like Baby 5's, who turn her body into weapons. Imu doesn't change—she just makes sledgehammers and ice picks and fire hoses from thin air. 5. Instant teleportation using magic circles You don't often see teleportation in One Piece, but Imu just shifts through space without a care. It's one of the most incredible powers in a show filled with them. She can draw blazing magic circles in the air and magically teleport herself, her entire magical girl army, or even massive weapons, across enormous leaps. Unlike yet another charlatan who set up their plays in slow motion, she sets up her entire play mid-air and virtually instantaneously. She is faster than any God's Knight. 6. Demon contracts: Turning people into immortal monsters Remarkably, Imu is able to write contracts that transform individuals into monstrous, demon-like soldiers. These contracts don't require anyone's approval. She can impose them unilaterally on whomever she pleases. Once the agreement is reached, the individual turns into an unparalleled clearing-device of death, answering to Imu's every whim, similar to Sugar's doll slaves from Dressrosa. 7. Total mind control Arguably, one of the spookiest aspects of Imu's power is mind control. Once she has someone under her influence, they're not just physically altered—they're mentally controlled. This is even deeper than the deepest recorded Devil Fruit. It's even more impressive than Pudding's memory-altering powers or Breed's anime-only control collars. Is Imu the most powerful villain in One Piece? Fans are left wondering now, as the series continues to ramp up towards its conclusion, whether or not Imu is, in fact, the final boss of One Piece. Her powers aren't just physical—they're emotional, mental, and even magical. Whether her powers are attributed to a Devil Fruit, ancient technology, or something even older, it's obvious she's in a league of her own. As the One Piece manga heads into its last saga, look for Imu to get even more dangerous. We've just gotten a taste of her power and if that taste is this horrifying, the fully realized powers she could unleash would alter reality completely. Netflix is removing Sailor Moon Crystal — watch it before it's gone!
One of Netflix's most iconic anime titles, Sailor Moon Crystal, is leaving the platform soon — and fans have just weeks left to watch it. Whether you're a longtime anime fan or someone who's only just learned about Sailor Moon, this is tremendous news. Sailor Moon is arguably one of the most iconic anime franchises of all time, and Sailor Moon Crystal is the acclaimed re-imagining that introduced the timeless magical girl tale to an entirely new generation. Unfortunately, that reboot is now set to leave Netflix. When is Sailor Moon Crystal leaving Netflix? Netflix has confirmed that they will be dropping Sailor Moon Crystal after July 1, 2025 at the latest. That makes June 30 your last opportunity to stream all three seasons of this iconic anime on the service. This removal is an early victim of Netflix's regular licensing removal rotations, where the show is removed when their licensing contracts expire. It's a huge let down for diehards, too, considering that Sailor Moon Crystal is largely responsible for bringing countless new eyes to the Sailor Moon universe. What is Sailor Moon Crystal about? For those who are new to the world of Sailor Moon, Sailor Moon Crystal is a more accurate retelling of the classic 90s anime adapted from Naoko Takeuchi's iconic manga. It centers on a teenage girl named Usagi Tsukino, who magically metamorphoses into the titular defender of love and justice, Sailor Moon. Along with her fellow Sailor Guardians, she fights against the forces of darkness in search of the Legendary Silver Crystal. Crystal's departure from it in terms of story and characterization largely came from the fact that it follows the manga more closely. Though the film's distinctive animation style was widely panned at the time of its release, producers found their footing by incorporating more dynamic storytelling in later episodes and films. Netflix losing anime licenses is becoming more common Netflix has invested both money and time in establishing its anime library with exclusive licenses and original productions. In recent months it's become more evident to fans when major/important anime titles slip away from the service unnoticed. Death Note, Hunter x Hunter, and now Sailor Moon Crystal — all these exits paint a picture of Netflix either shifting their anime strategy, or being bested by competitors such as Crunchyroll, Hulu, and Disney+. Can you still watch Sailor Moon Crystal anywhere else? Oh, and guess what? While Sailor Moon Crystal is dropping from Netflix, fans can still catch the beloved anime on the following platforms: Crunchyroll Hulu Pluto TV (Free with ads) That means you won't lose access entirely — you'll find it elsewhere — but it is an incredibly annoying shuffling around of assets for Netflix subscribers who like having everything in one place. Will the Sailor Moon movies stay on Netflix? If that's making your blood boil, here's some good news: The two follow-up films — Sailor Moon Eternal and Sailor Moon Cosmos — will still be on Netflix. These films adapt the last arcs of the reimagined storyline and act as the end of Sailor Moon Crystal. Without access to the original three seasons, there's a good chance that new viewers will have a tough time keeping up with the story of these movies. That's why you should binge Sailor Moon Crystal while it's still on the platform this June. Why you should watch Sailor Moon Crystal If you've previously been curious about Sailor Moon Crystal, there's no better moment to jump in on this fresh new interpretation. Whether you're revisiting childhood memories or meeting the series for the first time, this anime is sure to hit you with some amazing messages of friendship, love and courage. Plus, at just three seasons, it's the perfect short order series to check out before the clock runs out. June 30 is the last day to stream Sailor Moon Crystal on Netflix After that, it's history—for Netflix, at least. So if you want to catch all the magic that was in the beginning of this iconic Sailor Moon story before jumping into the Netflix-exclusive films, be sure to start streaming today!
