Lionel Messi scores brace as Inter Miami crushes Coumbus Crew
Lionel Messi had two goals and three assists and Inter Miami used a three-goal first half to rout the flailing Columbus Crew 5-1 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., on Saturday.
Messi chipped goals in the 15th and 24th minutes to augment a 13th-minute tally by Tadeo Allende for a 3-0 lead at the break. The Crew has allowed the first goal in five of their past six matches.
Messi has four goals and four assists in his past two matches.
Miami (8-3-5, 29 points), which ended four-match winless streak in a 4-2 win over CF Montreal on Wednesday, played its final match before opening Club World Cup play against Al Ahly of Egypt on June 14.
The Crew (7-3-7, 28 points) have two losses and four ties since their last win on May 3.

Miami jumped on top when Allende scored after a quick restart by Messi left him unmarked, not unlike the way a quick throw-in by Nashville SC resulted in the tying goal against the Crew on Wednesday.
The second goal was even more egregious. Crew goalkeeper Nicholas Hagen was pressured looking for an outlet and he cleared the ball to the one player in the world you absolutely shouldn't. Messi happily accepted the gift and lofted a shot over the backpedaling Hagen, who got a hand on it but couldn't stop the ball.
The Argentine then scored his 10th goal of the season and 30th in MLS regular-season play, breaking a tie with Gonzalo Higuain for the most in franchise history.

Sergio Busquets sent an overhead ball that Messi gathered outside the box and easily slipped past Hagen.
Columbus made it interesting when Cesar Ruvalcaba headed a corner kick by Dylan Chambost in the 58th minute for his first MLS goal in his seventh match. But a beautifully crafted build-up led to a Luis Suarez goal, his third in the past two matches, in the 64th minute to make it 4-1 Miami.
Messi sent Fafa Picault on a breakaway goal in the 89th minute as the Herons had no trouble exploiting a defense that has allowed 10 goals in its past three matches.

Cristiano Ronaldo by the numbers as he auditions for the Club World Cup
Evergreen and still setting records at 40 years of age. Cristiano Ronaldo continues to deliver at the highest levels of international soccer after guiding Portugal to the final of the Nations League. Ronaldo captained the team and scored the winning goal in a 2-1 victory over Germany in their semifinal on Wednesday to set up a showdown Sunday with Spain. The goal – Ronaldo's 137th for Portugal – extended his record as the leading scorer in men's international soccer. He broke the record as a 36-year-old by scoring twice in a European qualifier against Ireland in September 2021. That took his tally to 111 goals in 180 games for Portugal, surpassing the previous mark by Iran's Ali Daei. Before tucking away Nuno Mendes' cross for a tap-in against Germany, Ronaldo had gone close with a header, while he was also just inches from breaking the deadlock after the halftime break. His performance was a timely reminder for any teams playing at the Club World Cup that he's potentially available to join them for the tournament starting in the United States on June 14. FIFA president Gianni Infantino previously suggested Ronaldo could switch to one of the 32 participating clubs because of a unique transfer window created for the tournament. Ronaldo, who's still contracted to Saudi team Al-Nassr until the end of June, has been linked with several of the particpating clubs, including Brazil's Palmeiras and Wydad of Morocco, even though that club is banned by FIFA from registering new signings. A switch to Al-Nassr's bitter Riyadh rival Al-Hilal – the one Saudi club that qualified – has been mooted as a short-term solution to having Ronaldo play at the Club World Cup, where his great rival Lionel Messi will be playing with Inter Miami. FIFA would welcome the boost Ronaldo's presence can provide for ticket sales at the tournament, but such a switch to a bitter local rival for a short period would be unthinkable for players in Europe's leagues. Both Al-Nassr and Al-Hilal are among the four big Saudi clubs backed by the country's Public Investment Fund, which has a 75% stake in each. The PIF may put the national interest above that of Al-Nassr and strive to keep Ronaldo representing Saudi interests at the Club World Cup. On Thursday, FIFA announced PIF as an ' official partner ' of the Club World Cup. Saudi state money is also effectively funding the tournament's broadcasting deal that has largely backed its $1 billion prize fund being shared among the participants. Ronaldo didn't just add to his record goals-tally against Germany. Just by playing on Thursday he made his record-extending 220th international appearance. 137 – International goals scored 220 – International games played 6 – European Championship tournaments played 5 – European Championship tournaments scored 30 – European Championship match appearances 74 – European Championship appearances including qualifying 14 – European Championship goals 55 – European Championship goals including qualifying 5 – World Cup tournaments scored 52 – European Championship and World Cup appearances combined 22 – European Championship and World Cup goals combined 197 – UEFA club competition appearances 145 – UEFA club competition goals 140 – Champions League goals 67 – Most goals in Champions League knockout games 17 – Most goals in a Champions League season 183 – Champions League appearances 11 – Consecutive Champions League games scored 3 – Champions League finals scored soccer: /hub/soccer

Meet Franco Mastantuono — Real Madrid's latest Argentine wonderkid target from River Plate
On Friday, Franco Mastantuono made history when he became the youngest player to debut for Argentina's men's senior football team in a competitive match. He achieved this milestone by coming off the bench during La Albiceleste's 1-0 victory over Chile in a FIFA 2026 World Cup qualifier. At 17 years and 295 days old, he made history for the three-time world champions when he was substituted in for Giuliano Simeone in the second half at Estadio Nacional de Chile in Santiago. Meanwhile, the overall youngest player to ever feature for Argentina in any match, including friendlies, remains Diego Maradona, who made his debut at just 16 years three months and 28 days against Hungary in February 27, 1977. The teenager is reportedly joining Spanish giants Real Madrid from River Plate for an initial fee of about $45 million. A talented left-footed finisher, he established himself as a starter under coach Marcelo Gallardo and soon became a key part of the Buenos Aires-based team. Earlier, Mastantuono had been linked to other big European clubs such as Manchester United and Paris St Germain after attracting attention with a stunning free kick in River Plate's Superclasico win over Boca Juniors in April. Born in Argentina, Mastantuono is of Italian descent and holds dual Argentine-Italian citizenship. He was first called up to the Argentina national under-17 team squad by manager Pablo Aimar while still only 15. The youngster was described by River Plate youth coach Martín Pellegrino as a being capable of playing as an enganche, a play-making midfielder or a forward, noting his ball-striking ability.

Why is Lionel Messi not starting in Chile vs Argentina FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifier?
Argentina will look to cement its dominance in the FIFA World Cup 2026 qualification campaign as it faces bottom-placed Chile in their qualifier in Santiago on Thursday. FOLLOW THE MATCH HERE: Chile vs Argentina LIVE SCORE — FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifiers However, the most important name missing from its starting 11 against La Roja is its captain Lionel Messi. With 112 goals for Argentina, the Inter Miami forward is the highest goalscorer for his country and led his team to the FIFA World Cup title in 2022. Why is Messi not starting in Chile vs Argentina? The 37-year-old Messi was expected to return for Argentina after recovering from injury. His most recent game for the World Cup champion was in November 2024. However, coach Lionel Scaloni looks to have taken a cautious approach as the game is a low-stakes one; Argentina hhas already qualified for the 2026 World Cup. 'We've been in contact (with Messi) recently. We haven't decided yet whether he'll play from the start or not. It would be good to know how he's feeling physically,' Scaloni had told reporters. 'It's clear that today we're in a position to try other things. In principle, he's available to play, and we'll decide later.' Messi, however, will start from the bench and is expected to come on later in the match.
