Senthil, Ponmudy resign from Tamil Nadu cabinet in rejig
Tamil Nadu ministers Senthil Balaji and K Ponmudy on Sunday stepped down from the chief minister MK Stalin-led state cabinet, with the move necessitating a cabinet reshuffle.
Governor RN Ravi approved chief minister Stalin's recommendation on their resignation, a communique from the Raj Bhavan said. The resignations came days after Senthil Balaji, facing ED probe in a cash-for-jobs case in an earlier AIADMK regime, was asked by the Supreme Court on Wednesday to make a choice 'between post and freedom' as it had warned him of cancelling bail if he did not step down as minister.
'When you were a minister, categorical findings have been recorded against you in the manner in which you brought about settlement and the proceedings are quashed. Grant of bail does not mean power to influence witnesses. In the past, you have influenced witnesses,' the bench had said. The top court, as a result, offered him a choice.
'So, you have to make a choice between the post and the freedom. Such drastic findings are recorded against you in capacity as a minister,' the bench had said while hearing pleas to recall Balaji's bail on the ground that he influenced witnesses in the case.
Balaji was sworn in as a minister by Ravi on September 29, 2024 after being granted bail by the SC. He earlier resigned in February 2024, months after remaining as a minister without portfolio in the wake of his June 2023 arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).
Upon his re-induction last year, he was assigned the same key portfolios — electricity, non-conventional energy development, prohibition and excise that he held previously in the Stalin cabinet.
Ponmudy, a senior Darvida Munnetra Kazhgam leader, courted a major controversy recently over his Shaivite-Vaishnavite remarks, drawing widespread criticism, even as the Madras high court later initiated proceedings on its own on the matter.
Though he was removed from a key party post, there were demands from opposition parties and other quarters, for his ouster from the cabinet.
Transport minister S S Sivasankar will handle Electricity portfolio, held by Senthil Balaji. Further, housing minister S Muthusamy has been allotted excise and prohibition, also held by Senthil Balaji.
RS Rajakannappan has been allotted Ponmudy's forests and Khadi, in addition to his existing milk and dairy development portfolio, the release said.
Further, the Governor has accepted the CM's recommendation to include Padmanabhapuram MLA T Mano Thangaraj in the cabinet, it said. He was dropped in an earlier rejig of the cabinet.
The swearing-in of the minister designate will be held at 6pm on Monday, it added.
Responding to the development, principal opposition party AIADMK said Ponmudy stepping down was a victory for its various protests against him.
Balaji's exit was a 'justice' ensured through the court, it said on its official 'X' handle.
BJP state vice-president Narayanan Thirupathy said, 'Removal of Senthil Balaji & Ponmudi from Tamil Nadu ministry is expected though late.' 'It is not a shame on them but on chief minister MK Stalin for his misrule, corrupt government, maladministration & mismanagement,' he said in a social media update.

Mithi River desilting fraud: ED searches 15 locations, including Dino Morea's home
MUMBAI: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Friday carried out searches at 15 locations in Mumbai and Kochi in connection with the alleged irregularities in contracts for desilting the Mithi River, which resulted in a loss of ₹65.54 crore for the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). The locations that were searched include the home and office of actor Dino Morea, who has been questioned twice in connection with the case; the residences of arrested intermediaries Ketan Kadam and Jay Joshi; the residence of Prashant Ramugade, a deputy chief engineer with the BMC who was also named as an accused; and the premises of Matprop Technical Services Pvt Ltd, a Kochi-based company that rented machinery and equipment for the desilting work, officials said. The searches continued until late Friday evening, and the ED found some incriminating documents, officials said. Morea could be summoned to record his statement in a few days, officials added. The ED has launched a money-laundering investigation in the case based on the FIR registered by the Mumbai police's Economic Offence Wing last month. The EOW had booked 13 people in the case, including three BMC officials. Two of them—alleged intermediaries Ketan Kadam and Jay Joshi—were arrested. Joshi was granted bail by a sessions court on Thursday. The EOW had earlier interrogated Dino Morea and his brother Santino after finding financial transactions between them and Kadam's family. The police suspect that the transactions, which took place during the period of the alleged fraud—from 2019 to 2022—could be linked to the desilting contracts. The Moreas and Kadams have known each other for around 25 years, according to the police. Santino Morea and Kadam's wife, Punita, are also directors of a Mumbai-based company, UBO Ridez Private Limited, which operates Victoria-style electric carriages. According to the EOW, the three accused BMC officials allegedly tailored the tender for the desilting contracts to benefit Matprop, resulting in the company's monopoly over the contracts. When the BMC's contractors approached Matprop for desilting equipment, they were directed to approach Joshi and Kadam, who, in connivance with the company, rented the machines at inflated rates, according to the EOW. Matprop's director, Dipak Mohan, who was also booked in the case, has denied that he or his company were involved in the fraud. The accused also allegedly fudged records to increase the amount of silt to be removed from the Mithi River to benefit the contractors and the rates that they were supposed to be paid, according to the EOW.

'CM's office instructed full arrangements despite risks': Section of police force fumes, says senior officers have been made scapegoats
BENGALURU: The suspension of Bengaluru city police commissioner B Dayananda and four other senior officers has triggered a backlash within the police force. From constables to inspectors, many are furious and feel betrayed by the very govt they serve. 'The chief minister's office instructed him (Dayananda) to proceed with full arrangements regardless of the risks. If accountability must be fixed, it should start with those in the govt,' he said. Head constable Narasimharaju from Madiwala police station staged a protest in front of Raj Bhavan against Dayananda's suspension. He was detained, taken to Vidhana Soudha police station, and released after providing an apology. An assistant sub-inspector from the central division, termed the suspensions politically motivated. 'There is video proof of deputy CM DK Shivakumar waving the RCB flag and welcoming the team. They wanted to take credit, and now they've made scapegoats of hardworking officers. It's demoralising.' 'The police commissioner was against holding a function at Vidhana Soudha. He had pushed for hosting it only at the stadium, but the CM's office insisted on going ahead. We're being punished for following orders,' said a senior inspector. He added: 'We work round the clock, sacrificing family time. And this is what we get!' The chief secretary and other IAS officers are also being castigated by the police force for throwing caution to the wind. Police personnel argue that Dayananda worked tirelessly to make the city safer.
