Injury setbacks will 'stand to me in the future'

Having to overcome two anterior cruciate ligament [ACL] injuries in the space of nine months would be enough to break the spirit of many sportspeople.But in the case of Ireland scrum-half Aoibheann Reilly she is determined to use her experience of those setbacks to help her navigate her future rugby career and give her further incentive.After initially battling her way back from her first serious knee injury in the autumn of 2023, the 24-year-old suffered a second ACL tear in last summer's SVNS Grand Final in Madrid.That injury dashed her hopes of playing for Ireland Sevens in the Paris Olympic Games and the Roscommon woman only returned to competitive action when she played a part in the Clovers' Celtic Challenge matches in early March.Last week Reilly was introduced off the bench as a replacement for Emily Lane to participate in the closing 25 minutes of Ireland's 27-15 defeat by France in their opening Six Nations encounter in Belfast.This week she has been named in the starting line-up for Sunday's away encounter with Italy in Parma."I did my right ACL the first time and my left the second time. I had nine months of playing in between both. It was mentally very tough but I knew hopefully once I got it right that would be the end of me in terms of long-term injuries," explained Reilly."Coming back from the first one, I wanted to go to the Olympics and I also wanted that nine jersey for Ireland in the 15s game. I was really focused on putting my hand up for both teams."It was very tough but I had so many team-mates around me to support me and my family were amazing. Although it was a really tough moment, it really builds me as a player and builds my resilience. "It was an experience that I wouldn't wish on anyone but I think it will really stand to me in the future."
'A very emotional moment'
Reilly added that turning out for Ireland against France last weekend after all her injury problems was a special moment."It was a very emotional moment standing there for the anthem. "When I tore my ACL before the Olympics for a second time I was just focusing on getting back for that France game and I knew everything had to go right on my rehab journey to get back on the pitch. "That was a big moment for me and my family wearing the green again."Having gone down to the French in their opener, Reilly believes Ireland can get their first win of this year's tournament on the board when they face Italy in Parma on Sunday."After last weekend we weren't happy with the performance we put out. At times we had phases that were really good but then we also weren't clinical enough."This weekend that's a big focus for us. Going after the win that we know we're capable of."We know we have skilful players but at times we force things. In pressure moments, we just need to hold on to the ball and that's where we really need to execute. "These away games we really need to go after. It's so important going into the World Cup in England being able to go away from home and get a win. "

Summer McIntosh shatters world record with stunning freestyle swim
Canadian three-times Olympic champion Summer McIntosh set a world record in the women's 400 metres freestyle at the Canadian Swimming Trials in Victoria, British Columbia. The 18-year-old clocked 3:54.18 to better Australian Ariarne Titmus ' mark of 3:55.38 set at the 2023 World Championships in Fukuoka, Japan. "Going into tonight, I knew that my training has been really good these past few months, and I knew that I could do something special," McIntosh told public broadcaster CBC. "So being able to input my training in doing that - I didn't think my training would be 54.1 but I'm really happy with that." At the Paris Olympics, McIntosh became the first athlete from Canada to win three gold medals at a single Olympic Games. At Paris 2024, the four-times World Aquatics champion won gold in the 400 metres individual medley, 200 butterfly and 200 individual medley, as well as taking silver in the 400 freestyle. But things felt different at the Canada trials. "I just felt so strong throughout, and that's never been the case in the 400 freestyle for me. That last 100, I'm always really, really hurting. "But I flipped at the 200 and I was just cruising, so I knew that I was having a strong swim. Olympic champion takes part in Portsmouth sports bra research
A reigning Olympic champion has joined a study investigating how sports bras can work for different body types during physical University of Portsmouth research project is designed to assess how the underwear supports women of different bra sizes through practical rower Lola Anderson said: "A correctly fitted sports bra is the most important piece of kit for any female athlete."Researchers have urged more women to come forward and take part in the Hampshire-based study, which aims to enhance sports bra design with a more accurate understanding of women's needs. Ms Anderson, who won gold in the women's quadruple sculls at the Paris Olympics last year, said: "I didn't know how important they were until I was about 23 or 24, and I've felt a huge difference in having a correctly fitted, supportive bra since then."To see that backed up with the data during my visit to Portsmouth, was really reaffirming."A correctly fitted sports bra is the most important piece of kit for any female athlete and finding a bra that fits comfortably as well as helps my performance is invaluable." In addition to the testing, participants in the study will take part in a bra fitting, complete a series of questionnaires and have their breasts scanned to gather additional women aged between 18 and 39 who have not had breast surgery, are not pregnant and have not breastfed in the past 12 months are eligible to take Nichola Renwick, from the University of Portsmouth, said: "We frequently hear from women with larger breasts who feel there aren't supportive options available to them."Our aim is to identify what good breast support really means for larger sizes and to help create better options for everyone."
