PETALING JAYA : The bus in the Gerik crash that killed 15 university students was clearly speeding based on dashcam footage from a car, say police.
Perak police chief Noor Hisam Nordin said investigators have received the footage from the owner of the car, whose statement will be taken soon, Harian Metro reported.
'The recording clearly shows how the bus was speeding. What made matters worse was when a road barrier penetrated the front of the bus after it toppled over.
'That is why passengers seated on the left side of the bus were among those who lost their lives, because the barrier penetrated all the way to the passenger seats.
'We leave it to our investigating officers to go through the recording and take the owner's statement,' said Noor Hisam.
He added that the statements of survivors would also be taken, after several of the Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students claimed the bus was speeding before the crash.
He said the site of the crash was a downhill stretch of a hilly road and that the accident occurred around midnight after some rain.
'Based on my observation, there were no clear road markings and the area is very dark. We're still probing whether the cause of the crash was due to negligence or technical issues.'
Noor Hisam also said most of the survivors were found in a drain next to the barrier, while the bodies of most of those killed were still in the bus after the crash.
A total of 15 UPSI students died from the crash on the Gerik-Jeli East West Highway, near Tasik Banding.
The bus was carrying 42 students, the bus driver and his assistant. A couple, along with their six-year-old daughter and three-year-old son, were travelling in a Perodua Alza the bus collided with.

Kulim tour bus company declines comment on Gerik crash that killed 15 UPSI students

KULIM: A tour bus company based in Kulim, whose operating permit had been leased to another operator involved in Monday's fatal crash in Gerik, Perak which claimed the lives of 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students, has declined to comment on the incident. A representative from the company said it would refrain from making any statements while authorities conduct a full investigation. "We do not wish to comment at this time. Let the authorities carry out a thorough investigation as we do not want to complicate matters. "Furthermore, the incident involved numerous casualties. We wish to respect the families who are grieving the loss of their loved ones. "That is all we have to say for now," the representative told the New Straits Times, declining to elaborate further when contacted today. The Transport Ministry announced that the company's permits were revoked due to multiple breaches of permit conditions. The Transport Ministry announced yesterday that all of the company's permits were revoked due to multiple breaches of permit conditions. Its Minister Anthony Loke had said that the company had committed two serious violations: leasing its permit to a third party and failing to activate the vehicle's GPS tracking system. He revealed that the Kedah-based permit holder had leased the permit to an operator in Kelantan for RM500 per month. In the early hours of Monday, a tour bus carrying 42 UPSI students from Jerteh, Terengganu, to Tanjung Malim, Perak, collided with a Perodua Alza multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) along the East-West Highway (JRTB) near Tasik Banding, Gerik. Fifteen students tragically lost their lives in the crash, with 33 others injured. Meanwhile, checks at the company's registered premises, a double-storey shoplot along Jalan Kilang Lama, revealed that the office remains closed. A worker at a neighbouring unit said the office had been shut for over a year. "The office has been quiet since the Covid-19 pandemic in 2021. "I noticed it was fully closed more than a year ago," said the woman, who requested anonymity. The company's signboard states that it offers bus and van rental services for holidays, worker transportation, tour packages, and hotel bookings. A review of the company's Facebook page showed that it was last updated in September 2024. It is understood that the company currently operates bus services for transporting workers, with two of its buses found parked in a locked open-air lot not far from the premises.

Johor Customs foil drug syndicate's RM1m smuggling attempt via courier service

JOHOR BARU, June 12 — The Johor Customs Department has uncovered an international drug syndicate's tactic of using courier services to smuggle narcotics from Hong Kong to Malaysia, seizing nearly RM1 million worth of drugs. Johor Customs Department director Aminul Izmeer Mohd Sohaimi said the bust was made after enforcement officers inspected two suspicious parcels at a Pos Laju office here on April 23. 'An inspection of the parcels revealed a white bottle containing black liquid, which tested positive for morphine. The liquid weighed 10.194 kilogrammes and had an estimated street value of RM955,687,' he said at a press conference at Menara Kastam here today. Aminul Izmeer said investigations revealed the parcels had been sent from Hong Kong to a two-storey terrace house in Pulai, Johor. However, the owner of the house and the individuals involved are still under investigation. He added that the syndicate had disguised the drugs as candy and placed them in black liquid bottles to evade detection. 'This is a major success for the Johor Customs Department this year. We will continue to intensify inspections of suspicious parcels at all entry points, including courier centres,' he said. The case is being investigated under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for drug trafficking.

MACC chief: One or two suspects to be charged soon in Sabah mining scandal

KUALA LUMPUR, June 12 — Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki has confirmed that one or two individuals will soon be charged in court over the alleged mining scandal in Sabah. Speaking at a press conference after an MACC event, Azam said an official announcement would be made shortly on the individuals to be prosecuted. 'I will make an announcement very soon about the one or two individuals to be charged in court,' he said. Earlier on June 6, MACC sources revealed that investigation papers had been completed and submitted to the Attorney General's Chambers, with several individuals identified as potential suspects. The alleged scandal surfaced in 2024 after leaked videos showed purported discussions involving bribery and misconduct related to mineral exploration projects in Sabah, implicating several state assemblymen. Last month, MACC said it had finalised a forensic report on the controversial video clips. Azam had previously stated that initial versions of the videos were too heavily edited to be credible. In a separate update, Azam said investigations into the alleged misappropriation of sukuk funds for a Klang Valley highway project are expected to conclude in one to two months, citing the need for detailed document and financial analysis. The probe recently saw MACC officers record a six-hour statement from a corporate figure with a 'Tan Sri' title, with questioning ongoing at the individual's Kuala Lumpur residence.
