Service of 9,000 co-workers in cleaning will also be regularised, says CM Siddaramaiah
Close on the heels of regularising the services of 12,692 pourakarmikas in Bengaluru, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Thursday promised to regularise the services of nearly 9,000 other workers engaged in cleanliness work including drivers, assistants and waste operators in the coming days.
Addressing a programme organised in Bengaluru to distribute appointment/confirmation orders to pourakarmikas and also celebrate Pourakarmikas' Day, the Chief Minister declared that the government was committed to regularising the services of co-workers in cleaning works on the lines of pourakarmikas.
While the services of only sweepers have been regularised, there has been a consistent demand to bring waste collectors also out of the clutches of the contractors and regularise their services.
From the previous tenure
Mr. Siddaramaiah recalled that he had begun working towards the welfare of pourakarmikas in his first stint as Chief Minister between 2013 and 2018. 'Then the pourakarmikas were being cheated by the contractors who engaged their services by not giving them justifiable salaries. Hence, I introduced a direct bank transfer system under which the pourakarmikas would get ₹17,000 a month in accordance with the Minimum Wages Act as against the earlier ₹7,000,' he said.
He said that as per the election promise ahead of the 2023 polls, their services are now being regularised. 'This will bring about a positive change in your lives as you would get ₹39,000 a month,' the Chief Minister told the pourakarmikas.
Speaking on the occasion, Deputy Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar, who is also in-charge of Bengaluru city, said the government considers pourakarmikas as ambassadors of cleanliness. 'Your contribution is significant in making this city get global recognition,' he remarked.
IPD Salappa panel
Mr. Shivakumar said the government was considering implementing the various recommendations of the IPD Salappa Committee for the welfare of pourakarmikas in a phased manner. The implementation of the recommendations is expected to cost ₹600 crore, he noted.
Participating in the event, Leader of the Opposition in Rajya Sabha and AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge batted for the regularisation of pourakarmikas across Karnataka. 'Now that the Congress government has regularised the service of 12,692 pourakarmikas here, I hope it is extended to their counterparts working in various local government bodies as well,' he said.

Congress president slams Modi for keeping Deputy Speaker post in Lok Sabha vacant
Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge strongly criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for keeping the post of Deputy Speaker in the Lok Sabha vacant for a third consecutive term, calling the move 'undemocratic and unconstitutional'. 'Since Independence, no Prime Minister — except Mr. Modi — has left the Deputy Speaker's post vacant. He is now in his third term, and the position has remained vacant throughout. The Constitution provides for the election of a Deputy Speaker, and it is customary to appoint someone from the opposition. When we were in power, we appointed a member from the opposition. Mr Modi's refusal to do so is illegal and undemocratic,' Mr. Kharge said, adding that he had written to the Prime Minister on the matter. PM ignores past contributions to Kashmir rail network Speaking to media representatives at his residence in Kalaburagi on June 11, Mr. Kharge took aim at Mr. Modi for failing to acknowledge the contributions of previous governments in expanding the railway network in the Kashmir Valley. 'The work to connect the Valley to the Indian mainland via rail was initiated by former Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao in the 1990s. It was further advanced by former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee. However, the most significant progress occurred during the UPA government under Dr. Manmohan Singh. As Railway Minister, I allocated substantial funds to Kashmir and the North East. Mr. Modi has merely continued what we had already begun, and considerably did. It is his habit to inaugurate projects initiated by others without giving due credit,' he said. '36 wrongdoings in 11 years' Responding to queries on the 11-year tenure of the Modi-led NDA government, Mr. Kharge said that Mr. Modi committed 36 wrongdoings in these 11 years. 'I have not seen a Prime Minister who lies so frequently, commits so many mistakes, misleads the public, deceives the youth, and manipulates people for votes as Mr. Modi does. In my 65 years in politics, and 55 years in power, I have never encountered a Prime Minister like him. He does not act without resorting to falsehoods. When questioned about his claims, he offers no answers. He never admits his mistakes, nor does he apologise for them,' he added.

Amit Shah keen on restoring elected government in Manipur: Former CM Biren Singh
Former chief minister N Biren Singh on Wednesday said Union home minister Amit Shah is keen on restoring the elected government in Manipur, where President's Rule has been in effect since February 13. Speaking to media persons at Bir Tikendrajit International Airport, Imphal, Biren said Rajya Sabha MP Leishemba Sanajaoba and himself met central leaders, including Shah where they briefed them about the situation in Manipur. 'We apprised the Union home minister of the situation in Manipur,' Singh said. 'We met him on Monday night from around 11pm to 1am, and again on Tuesday afternoon from 3:15pm to 4pm', he said. Also Read:Arambai Tengol suspends shutdown in Manipur districts amid public hardship The former CM said the state delegation briefed Shah about the ongoing blockades, public unrest and the ongoing communal tension in the state. He added that Shah is holding multiple rounds of dialogue with various communities to address the crisis. 'Our state's issues have become complex and highly sensitive as they have escalated to a community level,' Biren said. 'The Union home minister has appealed to all communities to maintain peace, which is essential for progress', he said. Quoting the Union home minister, Singh said that the central government is committed to maintaining Manipur's territorial integrity and is making every effort to restore peace. 'He (Amit Shah) has given us some groundwork responsibilities, which I cannot disclose at the moment,' Biren added. 'However, civil bodies, MLAs, and the public must take a unanimous stand to resolve the ongoing violence in Manipur', he added. He also mentioned that during the meetings, the delegation requested an extension of 30 days for the detection of undocumented migrants. Manipur was placed under the President's Rule and the state government was put in suspended animation on February 13, four days after Biren Singh resigned as chief minister amid escalating violence and political instability. Manipur, which was torn by ethnic strife for close to two years after violence started in May 2023, has been witnessing fresh tension since the weekend, with hundreds storming the streets and resorting to arson in protest against the arrest of Kanan Singh, a member of Arambai Tenggol, and detention of four of his associates.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge justifies fresh caste census in Karnataka
Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge justified the decision to conduct a fresh caste census in Karnataka, saying it is necessary to reflect current realities. 'The last caste census was conducted ten years ago during Mr. Siddaramaiah's first tenure as Chief Minister. Much has changed since then, with several communities being reclassified. A new survey is essential to assess the present socio-economic and educational status of each caste. The same parameters used in the previous census will be applied again, along with new parameters,' he explained. No Cabinet reshuffle When asked about the Congress high command's recent meeting with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, Mr. Kharge clarified that the issues of Cabinet reshuffle and change of KPCC president were not on the agenda. 'We discussed several matters, including the caste census and the tragic stampede at M. Chinnaswamy stadium in Bengaluru, which claimed 11 lives and injured 56 others during the RCB's IPL victory celebration,' he said. Responding to the opposition's demand for resignation of the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister over the stampede, Mr. Kharge questioned whether Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had stepped down following the stampede at the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj. 'Calls for resignation are justified only when there is deliberate wrongdoing. This was a tragic incident that should never have occurred. We are deeply saddened by the loss of young lives. It is heartbreaking to witness the grief of their parents. Our focus must now be on ensuring that such tragedies are not repeated,' he said.
