Valerie Mahaffey death: Young Sheldon and Desperate Housewives star dies aged 71

Emmy-winning actor Valerie Mahaffey has died at age 71. The Young Sheldon and Desperate Housewives star, who had been diagnosed with cancer, died May 30, her husband Joseph Kell confirmed. 'I have lost the love of my life, and America has lost one of its most endearing actresses. She will be missed,' Kell said in a statement, per Variety. Born in Indonesia, Mahaffey got her start on Broadway, appearing in six plays and musicals in the 1970s and 80s. She appeared in more than a dozen off-Broadway and regional productions as well, including Othello opposite Morgan Freeman and Romeo and Juliet with Tom Hulce. After establishing herself as a versatile stage actor, Mahaffey became in-demand among TV and film productions. Mahaffey's first TV break came on the daytime soap opera The Doctors, for which she was nominated for a Daytime Emmy Award in 1980. She would go on to win the 1992 supporting actress Emmy for her work on Northern Exposure. Mahaffey played Eve in the comedy-drama, which aired on CBS from 1990-1995. Mahaffey's other notable TV roles included Alma Hodge on season three of Desperate Housewives, teacher Victoria MacElroy on Young Sheldon, and Helen Pergman on Big Sky. She guest starred on dozens of shows throughout her career including Cheers, CSI, Seinfeld, Wings, ER, The Mindy Project, Grey's Anatomy, Hannah Montana, and Boston Legal. Her film credits included roles in Jungle 2 Jungle, My First Wedding, Sully, and this year's Apple TV thriller, The 8th Day. She gained acclaim for the 2020 indie film French Exit with Michelle Pfeiffer and Lucas Hedges, earning her an Independent Spirit Award nomination. Fans saddened to hear word of Mahaffey's passing shared tributes on social media. 'Nobody could play CRAZY like Valerie Mahaffey. Desperate Housewives was INSANE,' one fan shared with a clip of Mahaffey in a scene with Marcia Cross. 'RIP Valerie Mahaffey. Thanks for all the laughs,' another wrote. 'RIP to a wonderful character actress. No matter the episode count or number of lines she would have, Valerie Mahaffey made an impression. Loved her as Frasier's secretary & on Big Sky,' another said. Someone else wrote: 'Valerie Mahaffey was always JUST right no matter what she was working in. Always so memorable, talented. I can't believe she was even 71 as that means she really was a part of my life watching things as long as I've been around. Grateful for her good work always.'

AFPM's Highest Safety Honor Goes to Three Marathon Petroleum Refineries

Key Points May 30, 2025 /3BL/ - Only four facilities earned the highest honor at this year's American Fuel & Petrochemical Manufacturers (AFPM) safety awards, and three of them are from Marathon Petroleum Corporation (MPC). The company's refineries in Detroit, Michigan; El Paso, Texas; and Kenai, Alaska, received the Distinguished Safety Award (DSA), which is reserved for facilities with performance in the top 1% of the industry. 'These awards reflect how strongly our facilities are adhering to company tenets that promote an incident-free workplace,' said MPC Refining Personal Safety & Security Senior Director Fritz Kin. 'Safe and reliable operations come only by focusing daily on protecting our people and the communities where we operate.' The DSA recognized the sites for a sustained, exemplary level of safety performance, program innovation and safety leadership throughout 2024. The winners were selected from a pool of finalists after site representatives went through face-to-face interviews with a committee of industry safety experts. In addition to the DSA winners, MPC's Catlettsburg, Kentucky, refinery won AFPM's Elite Silver Award for safety performance in the top 10% of the industry. Also, MPC's Robinson, Illinois, and Salt Lake City, Utah, refineries received the Safety Achievement Award for maintaining exemplary safety standards. Additionally, MPC's Refining Safety and Refining IT groups earned an Honorable Mention Award for innovation that recognized deployment of a chatbot tool to enhance safety. 'We are extremely proud of our teams because we know the focus that's required to reach this level of excellence and set yourself apart from industry peers,' said MPC Refining Process Safety Management Senior Director Marcus Garvin. 'Our employees truly put our core value of safety and environmental stewardship into action through consistent practices that reinforce safe work execution.' AFPM's awards reflect both personal safety performance and process safety performance. Among other award criteria, eligible facilities must not have a single recordable injury involving a life-critical task – an activity with the potential to cause serious harm to individuals; severe equipment damage; or a negative environmental impact. The Detroit refinery's DSA is its first since winning a 2010 and 2008 DSA. This is the first year the El Paso and Kenai refineries have earned the DSA. At last year's awards, the El Paso refinery received a 2023 Elite Platinum Award, AFPM's second highest honor, and the Kenai refinery earned a 2023 Elite Silver Award. Inside Hugh Jackman's Breathtaking Real Estate Portfolio amid Divorce from Deborra-lee Furness

Hugh Jackman and Deborra-lee Furness's divorce comes with a bevy of impressive assets that will be divided up among the spouses of nearly three decades. Furness, 69, officially filed for divorce from Jackman, 56, on May 23, nearly two years after they first announced their split in 2023. As of Friday, May 30, the pair are awaiting a judge's signoff to finalize their nearly $400 million settlement. Throughout their marriage, the former couple occupied properties around the world, including in the U.S., U.K. and their native Australia. At present, their high-ticket homes include a two-story apartment in New York City's Chelsea neighborhood, a penthouse overlooking Bondi Beach in Sydney and a waterfront home in the Hamptons. Jackman and Furness purchased their impressive downtown Manhattan abode for about $21 million in 2022, just a year before announcing their split, according to Architectural Digest. The penthouse apartment comes in at nearly 5,000 square feet spread across two floors, plus another 3,700 square feet of outdoor space — the ultimate N.Y.C luxury. It's located near the Hudson River in a starchitect-designed building in an area that is well known for its eye-catching facades and famous tenants. Recently Jackman has been spending much of his time in New York, where he is currently juggling two gigs on stage, starring in an Off-Broadway show, Sexual Misconduct of the Middle Classes, and a concert series at Radio City Music Hall, called From New York, With Love. Jackman and Furness have bought, sold and rented numerous apartments and homes around Sydney since they first met on the set of an Australian TV series in 1995 and married the following year. Their most recent acquisition appears to be an ultra-modern condo overlooking the city's famous Bondi Beach. They paid a reported $6 million for the three-bedroom, two-bathroom spread in 2016, per AD. Jackman is regularly spotted making the most of the property's stunning seaside setting. In December 2024, he was photographed after having taken a summer dip in the ocean wearing a pair of blue-and-white patterned drawstring board shorts. Long before buying their current house, Jackman, Furness and their two children, son Oscar and daughter Ava, were already regular visitors to the world-famous stretch of sand. The one home the former couple shared with the world is their modernist Hamptons hideaway, which was published in an AD feature in November 2021. Jackman and Furness purchased an empty 2.5-acre waterfront plot for $3.5 million in 2015 and spent the next six years building a custom Long Island retreat with three bedrooms, five bathrooms, a guest house and access to a private beach. Furness called the place her "dream home,' sharing, "It's like, bucket list, tick it off. I've done it, and I loved it.' Jackman also praised his then-wife's decorating prowess. 'Because of Deb's design, it brings us all together," he told the outlet. Still, in 2023, the same year they announced their separation, they chose to list the house for rent for the entire summer, rather than use it themselves. The asking price was $166,000 per month, the New York Post reported at the time. They reportedly picked up an impressive London pied-a-terre in 2021, according to the Post, though at the time the property was not even complete, and it's not known whether they moved in. Another N.Y.C. property's status is also currently unknown: the three-story West Village penthouse the couple purchased for a reported $21 million in 2008. Their primary family home for many years, the 11,000 square foot property had five bedrooms, including a full-floor primary suite at the top. They listed it for sale for $39 million in 2022, but it remains unclear if the property has sold, per AD. Read the original article on People
