Stolen $100,000 Skid Steer Rams Police Off Highway In Slowest Chase Ever
If you're looking to make a quick getaway from a crime, you should probably opt for something fast and nimble as your escape vehicle - like a slick hot hatch. You probably shouldn't go for a cumbersome piece of heavy machinery that tops out at 12 mph as your escape vehicle, as a man in Alabama did last week.
Police in Alabama were led on one of the slowest car chases ever on January 30 when a man made off with a $100,000 skid steer from a paving company, reports CarScoops. The suspect tried to use the machine, which can't travel much more than 12 mph, to try and ram officers off the road before being captured.
The suspect stole the machine in Mobile, Alabama, on the morning of January 30 and then used it to try and ram a pedestrian. The driver of the skid steer was ordered to stop by police, before they hit the gas and led officers on a chase down Interstate 10, as CarScoops reports:
Part of the pursuit on the interstate was captured on video by a local. In the clip, the skid-steer can be seen slamming into the rear of a police cruiser, forcing the officer to accelerate away to avoid further damage. The driver appears to have then made other attempts to hit other police vehicles.
According to Wear News, police opened fire on the driver after failing to get them to comply with orders to stop. It's understood the driver was injured and transported to a local hospital for treatment. The extent of their injuries isn't known. According to those who witnessed the arrest, approximately 8-10 shots were fired.
The man who stole the skid steer ended up in hospital following the chase and first responders administered CPR on the scene, reports local outlet NBC 15 News. Police have not identified the man involved in the chase, and no other injuries have been reported as a result of the incident.
The industrial equipment caught up in the chase was reportedly a Kubota SVL75-3 compact track loader. The machine belongs to an asphalt paving company in Alabama and was valued at around $100,000, adds Equipment World. I don't know about you, but if I was going to steal a $100,000 vehicle, this isn't the kind of machine I'd go for.
Police impounded the bullet hole-speckled machine as evidence. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
This isn't the first time police in America have been caught chasing down heavy machinery. Over the past year, officers across the U.S. chased tractors, front-loaders and even snow plows.

He apparently smashed several statues before security officials intervened and placed the suspect under arrest. Video taken of the aftermath shows the statues shattered on the later said they believe Sun suffers from a 'mental illness,' adding that the matter is still under investigation. At this time, the museum is still open to the public, though the affected statues have been removed. However, the incident has raised questions regarding the Terracotta Army Museum's safety protocols. Wrestler charged with kidnap after 'HELP!' note left at Jersey Mike's
A professional wrestler has been charged with felony kidnapping and assault after his alleged victim left a note in a Florida sandwich shop begging for help, according to authorities. Jordan Williams, a 34-year-old blue-haired wrestler known as Jayden Steele in the ring, was busted after investigators reviewed surveillance footage at the Jersey Mike's in Navarre where the note was found, according to NBC 15 News. Sandwich maker Eleanor Coffee told the outlet that she found the crumpled-up note on the restroom floor. '[The author] was like, 'Please help me. I'm at this address in Navarre. I need you to call the police and do a wellness check,'' said Coffee, who immediately alerted her manager and called 911. 'Let cops know don't approach the house unless my Hyundai Kona is in the driveway because his parents will alert him and he will hurt me… I just want to get home to my kids and family… He controls my phone so he will know [if you message me],' the note read, according to the arrest report seen by EWrestling News. EV-Fueled Inferno Forces Crew To Abandon Ship Carrying 3,000 Cars Across Pacific
If fire departments on land have problems unleashing the torrent of water needed to extinguish a single burning EV, the crew of a ship doesn't stand a chance against hundreds of flaming lithium-ion batteries. A cargo ship carrying around 3,000 vehicles across the Pacific Ocean caught fire on Tuesday. The Morning Midas, a 600-foot cargo ship, was in the middle of a voyage from Yantai, China to Lazaro Cardenas, Mexico when the fire broke out. Zodiac Maritime, the ship's London-based operator, noted that smoke was first spotted on a deck carrying 800 electric vehicles. Once the blaze got out of control, the vessel's 22 crew members abandoned ship via lifeboat. With the ship roughly 300 southwest of Alaska, the U.S. Coast Guard dispatched aircrews and a cutter to respond to the emergency, according to Bloomberg. The evacuating crew on the lifeboat was transferred by the USCG to one of the three other merchants at the scene, helping to fight the fire. Zodiac Maritime wouldn't comment on which automaker's vehicles were burning to a crisp. This is an ongoing story, and we will update when we know more about the fate of the Morning Midas. The lithium-ion batteries fitted to the EV onboard kept the fire burning much longer than expected. One of the cars that ended up on the seafloor was a Porsche Boxster Spyder ordered by Matt Farah, host of The Smoking Tire. He was just glad that the ship's crew escaped unharmed. Fighting EV fires in the middle of an ocean is a tall task for any crew. It often takes tens of thousands of gallons of water to douse a burning lithium-ion battery. While it might seem straightforward to put a pump over the side and use saltwater to put out the flames, it's not a viable option. The salt in ocean water is electrically conductive and would fuel an ongoing blaze. Current guidelines for crews emphasize early detection and limiting water use by letting EVs burn while containing any potential spreading.
