How did Critchley's tenure unfold?
When Neil Critchley was appointed in October, many Hearts fans had never heard of the former Liverpool youth coach.Sure, he had managed Queens Park Rangers and Blackpool (on two separate occasions) but remained pretty much an unknown quantity.Chief executive officer Andrew McKinlay refuted suggestions Critchley was the club's second choice because talks had broken down with former Norway boss Per-Mathias Hogmo. And two wins in his first opening games appeared to show the Hearts board - or data partner Jamestown Analytics, who were heavily involved in the decision - had identified the right man. However, just three victories against the Premiership's bottom two teams in the next 14 matches followed.Included in this run was a wretched performance against Moldovan minnows Petrocub at Tynecastle when a victory would have ensured European football would continue after Christmas.Other big-game setbacks came against Celtic, Rangers and local rivals Hibernian, who resurrected their season after a similar dismal start to their campaign.Critchley wasn't helped by long-term injuries to key players, such as Frankie Kent, Stephen Kingsley and Craig Halkett. And when you add in the dip in form of striker Lawrence Shankland, the football gods were never really in his favour. However, he will accept that football is a results industry and those results were simply not there for him.

Bayern Munich 'are eyeing up swoop for Liverpool forward Luis Diaz after European giant saw bid rejected' - as star makes admission over his future
Liverpool forward Luis Diaz is being eyed up for a summer swoop by Bayern Munich, a report has claimed - and he has admitted he is talking to other clubs. The Bundesliga giants have shortlisted Diaz as they look to strengthen at left wing, alongside PSG 's Bradley Barcola and Athletic Bilbao's Nico Williams. That is according to Sky Germany, with Bayern bosses Uli Hoeness and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge finding Diaz, 28, 'very exciting'. Despite the interest, there has not yet been official contact from the Bavarian side, but Liverpool could be open to selling the Colombian for a reasonable offer. Indeed, they are said to be drawing up potential alternatives should Diaz move on. The versatile Diaz made 50 appearances across all competitions last season, scoring 17 goals and providing eight assists, and helped the Reds win the Premier League. Addressing his future while on international duty, Diaz said: 'I'm very, very happy in Liverpool. From day one, they've made me feel really welcome. 'Right now we're in contact with them because we're speaking with [other] clubs. It's normal, the market is open, and we're trying to sort out what's best for us. 'I am just waiting to see what happens. If Liverpool doesn't make a good offer, I still have two years left with them, I would be happy and content to stay there. And that's it, everything depends on them obviously, it's up to me to decide what's best for us.' Diaz moved to Anfield from Porto in January 2022, in a deal worth around £50million. He has scored 41 goals in his 148 total appearances for the Reds, tasting success in the top-flight as well as lifting the FA Cup and two Carabao Cups. Under contract until 2027, Diaz has not been formally offered an extension, and he could slip behind Florian Wirtz in the pecking order next season. Previous reports indicated that Barcelona saw an approach rebuffed this month, while Saudi Pro League outfit Al Nassr have also been credited with an interest. Diaz is said to have been open to joining the LaLiga club, believing this is the right time for a new chapter after three-and-a-half successful campaigns on Merseyside. Spanish newspaper SPORT said Diaz's asking price sits at around £51m - a valuation that Barcelona are unlikely to reach despite him being a top target. However, head coach Hansi Flick and sporting director Deco have both given the green light for the transfer in what has been dubbed 'Operation Luis Diaz'. Liverpool, meanwhile, have already made five signings this summer. Wirtz joined for a club-record £116m fee from Bayer Leverkusen, quickly followed by team-mate Jeremie Frimpong, while Milos Kerkez arrived from Bournemouth. Goalkeepers Armin Pecesi and Freddie Woodman will provide back-up to Alisson.

Hearts ‘saviour' stepping down as chair
Ann Budge will step down as chairman later this year, and Foundation of Hearts chair, Gerry Mallon, admitted: 'She saved us from the abyss.' Mallon's reaction followed confirmation that the search for a new chair is under way and Mallon said: 'Ann will leave a remarkable legacy. We are extremely fortunate to have had 12 years of her knowledge and experience at the helm of Hearts. 'In particular, her participation in the birth of the Foundation of Hearts can never be downplayed, neither can the instrumental role she played in saving the club from the abyss and taking it back up to the top of Scottish football. 'For that, I will be forever grateful to Ann, as I'm sure Hearts fans everywhere will be too.' She steps down after the annual meeting in December after playing a key role in enabling Hearts exit administration in 2014 and, since then, driving the club forward. Major projects overseen have included the museum, Memorial Garden, a state-of-the-art pitch, and the new Main Stand, incorporating the hotel. Investment in infrastructure has included improving facilities at The Oriam for players of all levels and the youth academy has been redeveloped, including the creation of a performance school. Ann said: 'Having discussed this with the board, I feel now is the right time to confirm that I intend to step down. 'When I first got involved with the Foundation of Hearts in 2013, I could not have envisaged the journey it would take me on. 'With Tony Bloom's investment now complete, and the supporters ensconced as custodians of the club, I believe I have done what I set out to achieve.' Andrew McKinlay, the club's chief executive officer, said: 'It cannot be overstated just how much Ann has done for Heart of Midlothian. 'As we get closer to December's AGM, we will update our supporters on our succession plans.' Like this: Like Related

Bayern Munich join race for Liverpool star as Reds face big transfer decision
The battle to sign Luis Diaz this summer has seen a new challenger enter the fray, with Bayern Munich interested in the Liverpool winger. The future of the 28-year-old has been a topic of discussion this summer after Barcelona made an approach earlier this month. Liverpool rejected that move, but that has not snuffed out transfer talk, with Saudi side Al Nassr also interested in the Colombian. Sky in Germany now report that Bayern are also fans of Diaz and have begun to explore whether a deal can be done. The Reds rejecting Barcelona's approach for Diaz suggests they are not interested in selling him this summer, but it has not been entirely ruled out. The left-winger has two years left on his contract at Liverpool and, given his age, the Reds will never get as much for him as they could do this summer. The former Porto star played a big part in Liverpool's dominant Premier League title win last season, playing 36 league games, scoring 13 goals and providing five assists. It would be a big decision to sell Diaz after the contribution he made over the last campaign, but Arne Slot does also have Cody Gakpo to play on the left wing. Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher says he was leaning towards wanting to see Diaz sold during this transfer window, but has changed his mind. 'If I'm being honest, for the majority of this season up until Christmas, I was thinking you sell Diaz in the summer,' Carragher told Sky. 'The way he's played and the way Liverpool's front line might change and with the fact that he can play through the middle in the manager's eyes, he's now going to stay and I think it might be other players who move on in the front line rather than Diaz.' Diaz spoke about the transfer speculation surrounding him earlier this month, saying he is more than happy at Liverpool, but admitted there has been contact with other clubs. 'I'm very happy there at Liverpool, I've always said so. They've welcomed me very well,' Diaz said when asked about links with Barcelona. 'We're in contact with them [Liverpool] right now because we're obviously talking to clubs. It's normal. Apps: 82 (21) Goals: 29 Assists: 15 When asked about renewing his contract with Liverpool, Diaz replied: 'As I told you, I'm waiting for it to happen. 'If Liverpool gives us a good renewal or I get the two years I need with them, I'll be happy and content. 'It all depends on them, I'm just here to decide and look at what's best for us.'
