Former Australia spinner MacGill avoids jail over cocaine supply
Former Australia cricketer Stuart MacGill avoided jail time after being found guilty of taking part in the supply of cocaine and was instead handed a 22-month intensive corrections order and 495 hours of community service on Friday.
Spinner MacGill, who had pleaded not guilty, had admitted to the use of cocaine and to introducing his partner's brother to his drug dealer, state broadcaster ABC reported.
Prosecutors alleged that the pair later made a deal for A$330,000 ($211,398) worth of cocaine but MacGill maintained his involvement was limited to the introduction at his Sydney restaurant in April 2021.
A group of men were arrested a month later in connection with the abduction of MacGill, who said he had been taken to an abandoned house where he was beaten and threatened with a gun.

The 54-year-old, who probably would have played more than 44 tests if he had not been a contemporary of Shane Warne, had been cleared of involvement in the commercial supply of cocaine by a jury in March.
An intensive corrections order is a custodial sentence which the court decides can be served in the community.

Punjab government bans stray dog killings, enforces animal birth control policy
Listen to article In a landmark decision, the Lahore High Court has declared the killing of stray dogs through shooting, poisoning, or other inhumane methods as illegal and unconstitutional across Punjab. The judgment, delivered on May 22, 2025, in the case Eiraj Hassan & Others vs Government of Punjab, prompted the provincial government to formally implement the Animal Birth Control (ABC) Policy 2021. The policy lays out a comprehensive framework to humanely manage the stray dog population through vaccination, sterilization, tagging, registration, and rehabilitation. Advocates Eiraj Hassan and Altamush Saeed filed the petition, arguing that the widespread culling of stray dogs was a violation of animal welfare principles and basic human compassion. Advocate Altamush Saeed hailed the court's decision as a major success for animal rights in Pakistan. He pointed out that the Animal Rescue Centre was summoned to court but failed to appear. Nevertheless, departments including Livestock & Dairy Development and Local Government assured the court of full implementation of the ABC Policy. Under the new policy, stray dogs will be captured safely and non-violently and taken to animal shelters. Here, they will undergo vaccination and sterilization. Once deemed healthy, they will be tagged and released back into the same locality. Dogs that are terminally ill or severely injured will be euthanized humanely under veterinary supervision using sodium pentothal, a painless euthanasia drug. The policy also envisions the establishment of shelter homes in every tehsil, to be operated in collaboration with private welfare organizations or under government oversight. Monitoring committees at the district, tehsil, and provincial levels will ensure strict implementation. Experts note that while the court's ruling effectively bans cruel culling, on-ground enforcement of sterilization and the construction of shelters remain slow. Dr. Haider Ali Khan, spokesperson for the Livestock and Dairy Development Department, explained that municipal staff will be tasked with capturing dogs and transporting them to veterinary centers for sterilization, after which the animals will be returned to their localities. Veterinary hospitals across Punjab have been notified and prepared to participate. Although the policy offers a progressive and humane framework, its success hinges on inter-agency coordination, sustained community involvement, and adequate budgetary support. The government has committed to allocating dedicated funds for ABC implementation in the upcoming fiscal year. As Punjab shifts toward a more humane and scientific approach to managing stray dogs, civil society and local governments must now play a vital role in ensuring the policy is more than just ink on paper.

Punjab police deploys over 8,000 personnel for PSL final
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr Usman Anwar on Sunday said that more than 8,000 police officers and personnel have been deployed to ensure foolproof security for the Pakistan Super League (PSL 10) final between Lahore Qalandars and Quetta Gladiators. According to a Punjab Police spokesperson, the IGP has instructed authorities to implement stringent security protocols for both local and international players, officials, and fans attending the match. Dr Usman said that senior officers will personally oversee arrangements related to security, traffic management, and public safety. He stressed that personnel deployed at duty points must maintain high vigilance and remain alert to any suspicious activity. 'We have adopted a more advanced security strategy for PSL matches to ensure a safer environment for all,' said Dr Usman, while commending the performance of police forces in Lahore, Rawalpindi, and Multan for maintaining peace during earlier fixtures. JI Karachi decides to protest against water shortages
KARACHI: Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Karachi Chief, Monem Zafar on Wednesday announced city-wide protest demonstrations on 13 major arteries of Karachi on Friday, May 16, to address the acute water shortage plaguing the city. Speaking at a press conference at JI's headquarters, Idara Noor-e-Haq, the JI leader criticized the Pakistan Peoples' Party (PPP) government in Sindh for its 'anti-Karachi' policies and systemic deprivation of essential services. He accused the PPP, in collaboration with the Muttahida Qaumi Movement and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, of manipulating Karachi's population count from over 35 million to just above 20 million, reducing the city's share of national resources. He highlighted the conversion of key institutions like the Karachi Building Control Authority into the Sindh Building Control Authority and the Karachi Development Authority's Master Plan Department into the Sindh Master Plan Authority, alleging these changes enabled corruption and diminished Karachi's autonomy. Monem pointed to the recurring failures of Karachi's water infrastructure, noting that an 84-inch water supply line had developed leaks six times in the past seven months, with the latest incident 14 days ago leaving large parts of the city without water. He questioned the absence of the mayor, local government minister, and chief minister in addressing the crisis. He also criticized the stalled K4 water project, initiated by the late Nematullah Khan, which has ballooned from Rs25 billion to Rs200 billion while its capacity has been reduced from 650 million gallons to 260 million gallons. The JI Karachi Chief cited an incident where an anti-encroachment official was tortured in Korangi Town, vowing that JI would mobilize Karachiites to resist these mafias. Commenting on the recent operation 'Bunyan Marsoos' on May 10, 2025, he praised the military and called for sustaining the spirit of unity it inspired. He urged the restoration of institutions like the National Cadet Corps, Civil Defense, and Scouts to bolster national preparedness. The protests aim to demand immediate action on Karachi's water crisis and broader governance failures, with JI positioning itself as a defender of the city's rights.
