Iraq affirms support for Iran following Israeli assaults

Iraqi News7 hours ago

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – The Iraqi Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, expressed on Sunday the Iraqi government and people's support for Iran, which is facing blatant Israeli aggression.
Al-Sudani's remarks took place during his phone conversation with the Iranian President, Masoud Pezeshkian, in which he reiterated Iraq's commitment to Iran's security and stability, which are related to regional peace, according to a statement released by the Prime Minister's Office (PMO).
Al-Sudani also stressed Iraq's commitment to preventing the war from spreading, citing measures taken by the Iraqi government to prevent Israel from violating Iraqi airspace.
Iraq submitted a formal complaint to the UN Security Council earlier, condemning Israel's use of Iraqi airspace to carry out airstrikes against Iran, describing it as a violation of sovereignty and a threat to regional peace.
Al-Sudani stated that Iraq is ready to provide the assistance required to deal with the consequences of the war against Iran within the context of Islamic unity.
According to White House and Israeli sources, Israel's operation against Iran would last weeks and is being carried out with the implicit knowledge of the United States.
Amid the recent escalation of hostilities, the death toll from Israel's attacks on Iran has risen to 78. On the other hand, Iran's counterattacks on Israel killed at least 10 people, according to officials in both countries.

Iran: Over 220 Iranians killed in Israeli attacks

Shafaq News/ At least 224 Iranians, including 73 women and children, have been killed in Israeli airstrikes since early Friday, Iran's Health Ministry reported on Sunday. An initial count listed 128 fatalities and over 900 injuries—many critical—after coordinated Israeli strikes hit major cities and key infrastructure. The ministry noted that hospitals remain on high alert, with emergency teams working to treat the wounded across multiple provinces. Israeli propaganda: "Surgical strikes, no residential damage." Reality: In just three recent strikes in Tehran, 73 women and kids killed; 20 children killed in Chamran residential complex, 10 still remain trapped under rubble 48 hours later. Their 'surgical accuracy'?!… — Esmaeil Baqaei (@IRIMFA_SPOX) June 15, 2025 The mounting casualties follow Israel's Operation Rising Lion, launched June 13, targeting Iranian military and nuclear facilities. Iran responded with True Promise 3, firing multiple waves of missiles at Israeli military positions over three days.

US air defenses down drone over Erbil

Shafaq News/ US air defense systems stationed near the American Consulate in Erbil shot down a suspected Iranian drone early Monday, marking the second such incident in under 24 hours, a senior security source told Shafaq News. The drone was intercepted after approaching the vicinity of the consulate compound. No casualties or material damage were reported. The downing follows a similar event yesterday, when US forces intercepted another drone over Erbil's airspace, suggesting increased drone activity over Iraqi Kurdistan amid escalating regional hostilities. Both incidents come as Iran continues launching waves of ballistic missiles and armed drones toward Israel, part of its ongoing retaliation campaign known as True Promise 3. Iraqi and Kurdish airspace has reportedly become a transit corridor for these attacks, prompting growing concern over sovereignty violations and potential spillover into Iraq.

US downs drones near Iraq's Ain al-Asad amid Iran–Israel crossfire

Shafaq News/ US forces intercepted multiple drones targeting Ain al-Asad Air Base in Iraq's al-Anbar Province on Sunday, amid heightened regional tensions following days of military exchanges between Iran and Israel. American air defenses shot down a drone that approached the perimeter of the base, which hosts US and Iraqi military personnel. Separately, three drones were launched toward the base. All were intercepted successfully, with no casualties or damage reported, according to media reports quoting US military officials. The attempted attack comes amid growing concerns in Washington that US forces and assets in the Middle East may become targets as the Iran–Israel conflict escalates. President Donald Trump warned that any attack by Iran on American interests would trigger an unprecedented military response. 'If we are attacked by Iran in any form, the full force of the U.S. Armed Forces will strike at levels never seen before,' he stated. He also claimed that the United States was not involved in the Israeli strikes on Iran, despite Iranian officials previously accusing Washington of complicity. The latest developments follow Israeli airstrikes launched on Friday, targeting multiple military, nuclear, and intelligence sites inside Iran. The strikes reportedly killed several top IRGC commanders and nine nuclear scientists. Iran responded by launching hundreds of missiles and drones at Israeli targets. Israeli officials have openly stated they urged US involvement in the conflict. According to Israeli media, Washington is still evaluating options, though American officials have expressed concern that Iran may retaliate against US interests in the region.
