ICRA warns of hit up to Rs 4,500 crore to Indian auto component exporters amid US tariffs
AI-generated representative image
The automotive component sector in India is facing significant challenges due to new US tariff implementations, which are expected to substantially impact earnings of exporters, according to Investment Information and Credit Rating Agency (ICRA).
The tariffs introduced by Donald Trump in April, just months after his return to White House, could reduce operating profits by Rs 2,700–4,500 crore, representing 10–15 per cent of component exporters' operating profits and 3–6 per cent of the overall industry operating profits.
For FY2026, ICRA forecasts revenue growth for the sector — based on 46 key organisations with combined annual revenues exceeding Rs 3 lakh crore in FY2024 — to moderate to 6–8 per cent, down from the earlier projection of 8–10 per cent.
This revision is primarily attributed to an anticipated decline in US exports following the substantial hike in import duties.
Industry operating margins are projected to decline by 50–100 basis points (bps) to 10.5–11.5 per cent in FY2026, while exporters could face a sharper contraction of 150–250 bps.
Despite these pressures, ICRA expects most exporters to maintain satisfactory debt metrics and liquidity, although margin erosion and higher working capital requirements are likely.

"While the auto component suppliers with whom ICRA has interacted indicate that most of the incremental costs would be passed on, the extent of pass-through would depend on the supplier's criticality, share of business, competition, and the technological intensity of the components supplied," said Shamsher Dewan, senior vice president and head, Corporate Ratings Group, ICRA Limited.
Dewan also flagged concerns about increasing economic uncertainty, slowing vehicle sales, and weak replacement demand in the US market, alongside intensifying competition in European and Asian export markets.
The new tariffs impact approximately 65 per cent of India's auto component exports. While India has temporarily suspended reciprocal tariffs for 90 days, an ad valorem duty of 10 per cent remains applicable.
ICRA notes that India could gain a medium-term advantage if it strengthens cost competitiveness relative to China, especially as global OEMs reassess their sourcing strategies.
In recent weeks, Indian manufacturers have seen a rise in enquiries from US importers, suggesting potential new opportunities despite current challenges.
In a related development, as US-India delegation prepare to for formal trade talks, a report from last week indicated that India is preparing to formally request the US for relaxed export controls and enhanced access to advanced technologies under the proposed bilateral trade agreement (BTA), according to sources quoted by news agency PTI.
India's reported concessions that have been requested mirror the privileges the US has extended to strategic partners such as Australia, the United Kingdom, and Japan.
The Indian government is pursuing enhanced market access across various technological domains, including telecommunications equipment, biotechnology, artificial intelligence (AI), pharmaceuticals, quantum computing, and semiconductors. Simultaneously, India is advocating for lower tariffs on its labour-intensive export products, encompassing textiles, gems and jewellery, leather goods, garments, plastics, chemicals, shrimp, oil seeds, grapes, and bananas.

Self-deporting via app? US offers $1,000 and travel aid for undocumented immigrants
The US Embassy in India Saturday again addressed foreign nationals in the United States announcing incentives for those willing to leave. In a post on X, the US Embassy warned international individuals illegally present in the country to leave immediately. However, it followed this message with what it called a 'historic opportunity for foreign nationals who wish to leave the United States, including those unlawfully present.' The statement said: 'Depending on their circumstances, they might receive financial and other assistance from the US government to depart.' Those interested have been directed to register through the Trump administration's self-deportation Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Home App. The US government is promoting the CBP Home App for its incentives tied to voluntary exits of illegal immigrants. US Secretary of Homeland Security described self-deportation as the 'best, safest and most cost-effective way to leave the United States to avoid arrest.' Depending on their… — U.S. Embassy India (@USAndIndia) June 7, 2025 'DHS is now offering illegal aliens financial travel assistance and a stipend to return to their home country through the CBP Home App. This is the safest option for our law enforcement, aliens and is a 70 per cent savings for US taxpayers,' she added. Currently, the DHS claims that the average cost to arrest, detain and deport someone from the US is $17,121, The Guardian reported. According to the official Homeland Security website, incentives tied to self-deportation include a $1,000 stipend, and financial and travel document assistance. The stipend is granted once confirmation is received through the CBP Home App that the return has been completed. Those who voluntarily register may also receive help with booking tickets and obtaining necessary travel documentation. 'Aliens requesting assistance will have a timely departure arrangement facilitated for them (estimated departure to be within 21 days of approval),' the website states. Other incentives include a longer departure period for self-funded travellers, deprioritisation for detention or removal by ICE, and improved chances for future immigration options. The DHS outlines two eligible categories: 'Non-criminal aliens illegally in the United States who had an encounter with CBP either at a port of entry or between ports of entry' and 'categorical parolees whose legal presence in the United States has expired or will soon expire.' Applicants must be physically present in the US at the time of applying. Just days earlier, the US Embassy in India had issued another alert for visa overstayers, warning they 'risk arrest and heavy fines or incarceration… may be deported and could face a permanent ban on future travel to the United States.'

Bank officer in Kota embezzled Rs 4.6 crore from customers' fixed deposits to invest in stock market, arrested
JAIPUR: In a massive financial fraud case, a female officer at a private bank in Kota has been arrested for misappropriating over Rs 4.58 crore from customer accounts over a span of three years. The accused, Sakshi Gupta, was serving as a relationship manager at ICICI Bank and is alleged to have diverted funds from fixed deposits to invest in the stock market and faced heavy losses. Police officials revealed that between 2020 and 2023, Gupta illegally withdrew money from 110 fixed deposit accounts belonging to 41 customers. She exploited a system loophole known as the "User FD" link to access and siphon off funds without triggering alerts to the account holders. The fraud remained undetected for years and only came to light after a managerial transfer at the branch. When a customer recently visited the bank to redeem a matured fixed deposit, discrepancies in the account triggered an internal inquiry. Investigating Officer Ibrahim Khan said Gupta rerouted OTPs (One-Time Passwords) from customers' accounts to her own system by linking phone numbers of her relatives. This allowed her to carry out high-value transactions without the account holders being notified. "She developed a system that intercepted OTPs, ensuring customers remained unaware of the unauthorized withdrawals. We're investigating who else may have been involved — inside or outside the bank," Khan said.
