Spring Break brings record number of passengers to TPA

Tampa International Airport is forecasting at least four days in March with over 100,000 passengers, something they've never seen before.
Saturday, March 15, is expected to be the single busiest day over the month-long spring break window.
Following March 15, the airport expects the next busiest travel days to be March 29, March 22, and March 16.
TAMPA - The spring break travel season continued Saturday, a day Tampa International Airport officials believed would be the single busiest day during the entire five-week spring break period.
The airport is forecasting at least four days in March with over 100,000 passengers, something they've never seen before.

Saturday, March 15 is expected to be the single busiest day over spring break – which runs from March 1 to April 6 -- with 101,502 potential passengers moving through security.
"We call it the Super Bowl of the airport, because it's so busy during this time of year," TPA spokesperson Emily Nipps said earlier this week.

Joan and Jeremy Barnes spent the last week in Indian Shores and were flying back to their home in Cincinnati on Saturday.
"Well, we love the people and the food, the seafood. We don't have seafood in Cincinnati!" Joan Barnes replied, when asked why her family picked Tampa Bay as their preferred vacation destination. "And the beach: We don't have a beach either!"
Meanwhile, Madeira Beach eighth grader, Chris Melnick, said he's been looking forward to his family's spring break trip for a while now. He's off from school for next week.
"We're going to travel to Mexico City and go to Puebla and see all the pyramids," Melnick said.
TPA officials said during spring break, they see more car rentals compared to the holidays. In fact, some passengers told FOX 13 that Saturday's rental car lines were long.
"Spring break is different in that it's spread out for long periods of time. We see lots of families going through this time of year, and a lot of people that are renting cars, because they're visiting Florida. They don't have any place to get around, so they have to rent cars here."

Tampa airport unveils design for $1.5B Airside D terminal

Tampa International Airport has revealed new renderings for the $1.5 billion Airside D, a new terminal with 16 gates, according to a June 5 news release. The roughly 600,000-square-foot aerodrome project is being led by Greeley, Colorado-based contractor Hensel Phelps and Kansas City, Missouri-based architecture and engineering firm HNTB, alongside San Francisco-based Gensler. It will be TPA's first new airside in almost 20 years, according to the project's website. The airport and construction team broke ground on Airside D in December 2024, and has been prepping the site for major construction by removing concrete, installing fencing and establishing contractor offices, among other enabling work, according to the release. The current, $1.5 billion price tag is nearly double what Hensel Phelps originally won in 2023. Jeff Siddle, the airport's vice president of planning and development, told the Tampa Bay Business Journal in 2024 that the increase was the result of inflation that had continued since the COVID-19 pandemic, and that the original estimate was pulled from 2021 data, which didn't reflect the market at the time. Airside D will contain two levels, along with a mezzanine, a new shuttle system and guideway and an international passenger arrival processing facility. It represents the third phase of the airport's master plan, a blueprint for how it will deal with projected traveler growth, according to the release. While it currently serves 25 million passengers annually, that's projected to grow to 35 million passengers by 2037. Phases 1 and 2 of the plan included several major undertakings, according to the project page: The main terminal redevelopment. The SkyConnect Automated People Mover. A central utility plant. The new SkyCenter One office building. The airport expects Airside D to open to the public in late 2028. Here are seven ways to start protecting your device – and all the data on it – when you leave home, which makes for one less thing to worry about when you're traveling. Make sure that you've shut off the "automatically connect to public Wi-Fi" setting on your smartphone so that your device doesn't automatically jump on each available connection and leave you and your data at risk. You're always better off using your cellular data and your best judgement when it comes to which Wi-Fi spots are safe to connect to, versus allowing your phone to make that decision for you. Password protect, well, basically all the things. When possible, use biometrics like your fingerprint or facial recognition. If that's not available, then always make sure that you're using a strong and complex password for your phone and all your accounts. You may also want to consider setting up one of the best password managers before you leave if you need to keep track of all your different credentials while you're away. Lastly, make sure your phone's operating system and all your apps – especially vital apps like banking and email apps – are all up to date. This is important as doing so will ensure that they've received all the most recent security patches and updates. This will also help keep your device patched from any potentially security risks and keep your data and personal information as safe as possible while you're in unfamiliar places.

L.A. Travelers Can Now Skip Airport Traffic Thanks to This New Metro Transit Center
As of June 6, the LAX/Metro Transit Center is officially open, connecting Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) to two Metro lines and 14 bus lines. Eventually, the LAX/Metro Transit Center will be directly connected to LAX via the Automated People Mover Train, but for now, travelers can take free shuttles between the two points. The center's opening comes just in time for several huge events that will take place in L.A., including the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the 2027 Super Bowl, and the 2028 Olympics. In Los Angeles, people often say that the true test of someone's love is their willingness to pick you up from Los Angeles International Airport—enduring the traffic of LAX for a friend or loved one requires a certain selflessness and bravery. But now that the LAX/Metro Transit Center is open, getting to and from the airport could be a little easier. The new LAX/Metro Transit Center is located just outside the airport, near Aviation Boulevard and 96th Street, close to the LAX Rental Car Center. The new transit center is directly connected to the Metro's C and K metro lines. The C line links L.A.'s West Side to the east, running from El Segundo (where LAX is located) to Downey. The K Line runs north to south, going from the Jefferson Park neighborhood to Redondo Beach. The LAX/Metro Transit Center doesn't just provide travelers easy access to the airport, though. It also closes a key gap in the Metro's rail network by serving as a hub for the C and K lines. In addition to the two metro lines, travelers will be able to hop on 14 different bus lines at the new station, including Santa Monica's Big Blue Bus, the Culver City Bus, Torrance Transit, and Gardena's GTrans system. However, the LAX/Metro Transit Center isn't quite directly connected to the airport just yet. The Automated People Mover is slated to open in 2026, and once it does, travelers will be able to take the APM train from the transit center to LAX seamlessly. For now, shuttles will run every 10 minutes between the center and the airport, and will pick up and drop off guests at the lower level of each terminal. In order to ride Los Angeles' public transportation system (whether you're taking the metro or the bus), you'll need a Tap Card—you can purchase tickets and passes at any metro station or add the card to your Apple or Google Wallet for easy use. If you're driving into LAX from out of town, you could park your car at one of the L.A. Metro System's many Park & Ride facilities, and then hop on a Metro line to get to your flight. Los Angeles International Airport is one of the busiest airports in the world, and since Los Angeles will play host to a few big events in the coming years, it will likely only get busier. The new LAX/Metro Transit Center debuted just in time for events such as the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the 2027 Super Bowl, and, of course, the 2028 Olympics. The new metro center will hopefully take some of the pressure off of LAX-IT, the airport's ride-share hailing and taxi lot.
