Rip currents can be deadly for beachgoers. Here's how to identify them and stay safe over the July 4th holiday.
As Independence Day approaches and beach season is in full swing, one of the biggest dangers to beachgoers is rip currents.
About 100 Americans die from rip currents every year, according to the United States Lifesaving Association.
So far in 2025, there have been an estimated 18 known deaths in U.S. waters, including California, Hawaii, Florida and Puerto Rico, due to rip currents, according to the National Weather Service.
As beachgoers look to cool off with a swim over the July Fourth holiday, here's how to spot rip currents and how to protect yourself and others.
A rip current is a powerful, narrow channel of water that flows away from the shore at surf beaches, including Great Lakes beaches, the United States Lifesaving Association says. They typically form at breaks in sandbars and near structures like piers and jetties.
Rip currents are also different from rip tides. As the NOAA website explains, 'A rip tide is a specific type of current associated with the swift movement of tidal water through inlets and the mouths of estuaries, embayments, and harbors.'
Rip currents have been measured at speeds of more than 5 miles per hour, which is faster than an Olympic swimmer. They can quickly sweep away even the strongest of swimmers.
Generally, over 80% of rescues by surf beach lifeguards in the U.S. are in response to rip currents, according to the U.S. Lifesaving Association.
While rip currents don't pull people underwater, they can pull a swimmer away from the beach beyond the breaking waves, according to the NOAA.
Spotting a rip current can be tricky. According to NOAA, they can emerge whether it's raining or sunny, and even when waves are only two or three feet high.
Here are some signs that a rip current might be nearby:
A narrow gap of darker water that's seemingly calm between areas of breaking waves and whitewater
An area of water noticeably different in color
A break in the incoming waves
A line of foam or debris moving offshore

You can check beach conditions for rip current risks at the National Weather Service's beach forecast page before you head out.
While at the beach, the U.S. Lifesaving Association advises to never swim alone and to always swim in an area that's monitored by lifeguards, and consult them before entering the water.
Make sure that you and other members of your family can swim in the surf at the beach — pool swimming isn't the same as beach swimming.
Rip currents can occur in any weather, so assume that they're present at a surf beach and take the time to identify any of the indicators.
If you're caught in a rip current, stay calm and don't swim against the current, says NOAA. Swim out of the rip current, parallel to shore, then follow breaking waves at an angle toward the beach.
If you feel like you won't be able to reach the shoreline, draw attention to yourself by yelling or waving for help.
Immediately call a lifeguard or 911 for help.
If help isn't immediately available, throw something that floats to the person in trouble.
If you must enter the water, do so with a flotation device and always keep it between you and the person in trouble.
In attempting to counter rip currents, human chains can be a dangerous rescue technique because they have the potential to create a multi-victim scenario if the rip current pulls additional people out into the water.

Diontae Johnson admits he refused to enter a game because he was cold
Baltimore was too cold for former Ravens receiver Diontae Johnson. Perhaps the weather in, uh, Cleveland will be more agreeable for one of the Browns' newest pass-catchers. In a recent interview with the Sports & Suits podcast, Johnson confessed that he refused to enter a game for the Ravens last season because he was cold. "End of the third going into the fourth, they were like, 'Tae, we need you,'" Johnson said. "I was like, 'Nah, I don't think it's a good idea for me.' Like, my legs are already ice cold and I didn't wanna go out there and put bad stuff on film." Wet hot American summer? It's about to get gross for tens of millions of Americans across the US
Tens of millions of Americans making vacation plans should prepare for a wet and hot start to the summer over the coming weeks. Just days before the season officially starts, forecasters warned that more thunderstorms were expected across the central Plains and central Appalachians, as majorly high temperatures were anticipated in the Southwest. 'This morning, at Phoenix Sky Harbor, the low temperature was 86 degrees, 7 degrees above the normal for the day. Today will be another hot one with high temperatures expected to be near the 110's again across the region,' the National Weather Service in Arizona's capital warned on social media. Temperatures around Phoenix were expected to run between five and 10 degrees above normal through Friday. The monsoon season just started there on Sunday. In Las Vegas, an extreme heat warning was also in effect on Wednesday and Thursday. The high temperature in nearby Death Valley was 121 degrees on Monday. National Park Service officials had asked visitors to avoid traveling by motorcycle. The risk of heat-related impacts is projected to shift into the Plains states through the weekend, according to The Washington Post's meteorologist Ben Noll. But, heat isn't all people have to worry about in the coming weeks. Noll noted that humid conditions that contributed to deadly flash flooding in West Virginia last weekend will provide fuel for storms in the Plains and Midwest by mid-week before reaching the East Coast. 'Warm and humid conditions will lead to the development of scattered storms this afternoon and evening,' the National Weather Service's Quad Cities office in Iowa and Illinois said. Human-caused climate change is making all of these concerns more frequent and severe. New research released on Monday says it has tripled the frequency of atmospheric wave events linked to extreme summer weather. Heat waves, in particular, are moving slower and staying longer, a study published last year found. 'This really has strong impacts on public health,' Wei Zhang, a climate scientist at Utah State University and one of the authors of the study, told The New York Times then.
