OpenAI wins $200 million US defense contract
ChatGPT maker OpenAI was awarded a $200 million contract to provide the U.S. Defense Department with artificial intelligence tools, the Pentagon said in a statement on Monday.
'Under this award, the performer will develop prototype frontier AI capabilities to address critical national security challenges in both warfighting and enterprise domains,' the Pentagon said.
The work will be primarily performed in and near Washington with an estimated completion date of July 2026, the Pentagon said.
OpenAI said last week that its annualized revenue run rate surged to $10 billion as of June, positioning the company to hit its full-year target amid booming AI adoption.
OpenAI said in March it would raise up to $40 billion in a new funding round led by SoftBank Group at a $300 billion valuation. OpenAI had 500 million weekly active users as of the end of March.
The White House's Office of Management and Budget released new guidance in April directing federal agencies to ensure that the government and 'the public benefit from a competitive American AI marketplace.'
The guidance had exempted national security and defense systems.

OpenAI executives have considered accusing Microsoft (MSFT.O), opens new tab, the company's major backer, of anticompetitive behavior in their partnership, the Wall Street Journal reported on Monday, citing people familiar with the matter. OpenAI's effort could involve seeking a federal regulatory review of the terms of its contract with Microsoft for potential violations of antitrust law, as well as a public campaign, the report said. Such a move could unravel one of the most pivotal tech partnerships in the fast-growing field of artificial intelligence. OpenAI needs Microsoft's approval to complete its transition into a public-benefit corporation. But the two have not been able to agree on details even after months of negotiations, sources said. The companies are discussing revising the terms of Microsoft's investment, including the future equity stake it will hold in OpenAI, according to the sources. Separately, The Information reported that OpenAI wants Microsoft to hold a 33% stake in a restructured unit in exchange for foregoing rights to future profits, citing a person who spoke to OpenAI executives. The ChatGPT owner wants to modify existing clauses that give Microsoft exclusive rights to host OpenAI models in its cloud, the report added. Microsoft has not agreed to OpenAI's proposed terms and is reportedly seeking additional concessions from the startup, according to The Information. "Talks are ongoing and we are optimistic we will continue to build together for years to come," the companies told Reuters in a joint statement. Microsoft invested $1 billion in OpenAI in 2019 to support the startup's development of AI technologies on its Azure cloud platform. Since then, however, OpenAI has been looking for ways to reduce its reliance on the tech heavyweight. The company plans to add Alphabet's (GOOGL.O), opens new tab Google Cloud service to meet its growing needs for computing capacity, Reuters reported earlier this month. Zoomcar hit by massive data breach affecting 84 lakh users, SEC filing shows
Zoomcar users' personal data has been stolen in a data breach where hackers gained unauthorised access to its information systems, the car-sharing platform has confirmed. At least 84 lakh customers were affected in the security incident that took place on June 9, according to a Zoomcar filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The Bengaluru-based company said it had become aware of the data breach after a few of its employees received external communications from a threat actor who claimed responsibility for the data breach. Personal data stolen in the data breach includes the names, phone numbers, and car registration numbers of users. However, Zoomcar said that it had no evidence of hackers gaining access to financial information such as plaintext passwords and other sensitive identifiers. 'Upon discovery, the company promptly activated its incident response plan,' Zoomcar said in its filing. 'In response to the incident, the company has taken immediate actions to contain the threat and enhance its security posture. These measures include implementing additional safeguards across the cloud and internal network, increasing system monitoring, and reviewing access controls,' the company said. 'The company is also engaging with third-party cybersecurity experts to further assist with the investigation. The company has also notified the appropriate regulatory and law enforcement authorities and is cooperating fully with their inquiries,' it added. Zoomcar also said that the data breach had not impacted its operations. 'However, the Company continues to evaluate the scope and potential impacts of the event, including legal, financial, and reputational considerations, as well as any associated remediation costs,' it said. Zoomcar was founded in 2013 as a platform through which customers could rent cars on a monthly, weekly, daily, and hourly basis. In 2023, the company merged with an American blank-check firm called Innovative International Acquisition Corp (IOAC) and became a US‑listed public company registered in Delaware. Hence, it had to report the security incident in adherence to SEC financial reporting standards. Currently, Zoomcar operates in 99 cities with over 25,000 cars and more than 10 million users. Besides India, it is also available in Egypt, Indonesia, and Vietnam. In February this year, the company saw a 19 per cent surge in car rental bookings from the year ago period with contribution profit growing by 500 per cent to $1.28 million and net loss at $7.9 million.
