Bihar: 5 policemen injured as mob attacks station to free person held for violating prohibition law
Five police officers were injured in Bihar's Katihar district when a mob attacked a police station on Friday, allegedly to free a person arrested for violating the state's prohibition law, PTI reported.
The sale and consumption of alcohol have been banned in the state since April 2016 under the Bihar Prohibition and Excise Act.
Katihar Superintendent of Police Vaibhav Sharma told PTI that the mob attacked 'the Dandkhora police station in the intervening night of Friday and Saturday with an aim to free a person arrested in connection with violation of the prohibition laws'.
Sharma added that the mob entered the campus of the police station and started throwing stones at the policemen who were on duty.
'Five policemen were injured in the incident,' PTI quoted the superintendent of police as saying. The police officers fired in self-defence to disperse the mob, Sharma said.
'The mob could not free the arrested person from police lockup,' he added.

In a tragic incident, a woman was found dead in a hotel room in Paharganj area of Delhi on Sunday, while her male companion has been arrested by the police in connection with the case. The deceased has been identified as 29-year-old Sarika and the man as 31-year-old Sachin. According to Delhi Police, a PCR call was received at Nabi Karim police station, wherein a hotel staff said that a couple was staying in the hotel overnight. On Sunday morning, Sarika was found lying dead in the bathroom while Sachin was missing. Preliminary investigation suggest that the woman was allegedly strangulated using a drawstring, they said. The couple had checked in on Saturday at about 4 PM. They ordered food on Saturday evening, which was served in their room. The next morning, only Sachin was seen leaving the hotel premises and the woman was found dead, prompting the hotel to alert authorities. 'At 09:47 AM today, a PCR call was received at PS Nabi Karim, wherein the caller, a staff member of a Hotel in Paharganj, informed that a couple was staying in the hotel overnight. In the morning, Sarika (29) was found lying dead in the bathroom while Sachin (31) was missing,' said the Delhi Police. 'Preliminary findings suggest strangulation using a drawstring. The body has been taken into custody. A case under Section 103(1), BNS is being registered at PS Nabi Karim. Investigation has been taken up. The accused, Sachin, has been apprehended,' said the police added. Sarika's body has been sent for post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death. Further investigations are underway. A nine-year-old girl was found stuffed in a suitcase at a neighbour's house in northeast Delhi's Dayalpur area, triggering protests by family members and locals who alleged sexual assault and murder of the minor. Police and paramilitary personnel have been deployed in the area on Sunday to maintain law and order. According to news agency PTI, police sources said the perpetrator seems to have fled after stuffing her in a suitcase. Senior officials of the Delhi Police said all angles are being probed, including sexual assault. "We are awaiting the autopsy report to confirm the cause of death. Teams have been formed to nab the absconding accused. We are taking this matter with utmost seriousness," a police officer said. The child, a resident of Nehru Vihar, had gone to give ice to a relative living nearby around 7 pm, her family said. When she did not return home for a long time, her parents began searching for her. According to the victim's father, they approached several relatives and neighbours, but no one had seen her after her brief visit to one relative's house. "She had only gone to deliver some ice to our relatives. They said she stayed for five minutes and left. But she never came back. We looked everywhere. Finally, someone told us she was seen entering a house nearby. That's where we found her in a suitcase," he said. The girl's father alleged that when he reached the house, it was locked. Suspecting something was wrong, he broke the lock and entered the room. Inside, he found his daughter stuffed in a bloodstained suitcase. They rushed her to a local clinic, but the doctor asked them to take her to a hospital immediately. At Jag Pravesh Chandra Hospital in Shastri Park, doctors declared her brought dead, the father said.

Man arrested 11 years after robbery, abduction case in Delhi
New Delhi, Jun 8 (PTI) A man absconding for over 10 years after he allegedly carried out a kidnapping and robbery in central Delhi's Jhandewalan area was arrested, an official said on Sunday. Rakesh (37), a resident of Kishan Ganj, Delhi, was wanted in a 2014 case where he and his accomplices allegedly kidnapped the driver of a vehicle transporting a consignment of pan masala and at gunpoint and looted him. Six to seven men were involved in the loot that was carried out on the night of December 26, 2014. They later dumped him near Dhaula Kuan after robbing him of his belongings and fleeing with the vehicle and consignment. He was declared a Proclaimed Offender (PO) by the court in 2015 after evading arrest for over a year. Four of the accused were arrested but Rakesh remained at large. Acting on tip-off, a crime branch team apprehended him from Chaman Vihar in Loni. Police said Rakesh had also been involved in two other robbery cases — one each in 2022 and 2023 — and had been frequently changing his hideouts to evade capture. PTI BM SKY SKY

According to officials cited by news agency PTI, resignation remains his only option to avoid a Parliamentary motion for removal, which, if passed, would strip him of pension and retirement benefits. Justice Varma came under scrutiny after a fire at his Delhi residence in March led to the discovery of several burnt sacks of unaccounted cash in the outhouse. Though he denied knowledge of the money, a Supreme Court-appointed in-house panel, led by then Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna, found him culpable after recording witness statements and Varma's own deposition. Based on this report, Justice Khanna urged the President and Prime Minister to initiate his removal, PTI reported. As per Article 217 of the Constitution, a High Court judge may resign by writing to the President. The resignation becomes valid without requiring formal acceptance. If a judge resigns, they retain post-retirement entitlements. However, if removed by Parliament, they lose all such benefits. In Parliament, a motion for removal must be supported by at least 50 Rajya Sabha or 100 Lok Sabha members. 'It cannot be brushed aside,' Rijiju was quoted as saying by PTI, adding that reconciling the existing report with the statutory inquiry process will be a matter for the Speaker or Chairman to decide. Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar, while meeting members of the Punjab and Haryana High Court Bar Association, expressed dismay over the lack of a criminal investigation into the matter. 'A very painful incident happened... There was a cash haul, obviously tainted, unaccounted and illegal,' he said. Dhankhar criticised the judiciary's internal mechanism for shielding its members from FIRs, saying, 'Unless permission is accorded by a functionary at the highest level in the judiciary, an FIR can't be registered.' Justice Varma has since been transferred to the Allahabad High Court, where he has not been allotted any judicial duties. Rijiju has begun consultations with political parties to build consensus on the motion, which could be the first impeachment to be taken up in the new Parliament building.
