Ohio middle schools set to participate in mock trails
COLUMBUS — Over 500 Ohio middle school students will bring a popular middle school book to life at the Ohio Center for Law-Related Education's annual Middle School Mock Trial Showcase on April 24, April 25 and May 9 at the Thomas J. Moyer Ohio Judicial Center in Columbus.
OCLRE middle school mock trials are crafted from literature commonly taught in middle school classrooms. This year's case is based on Elizabeth George Speare's classic, "The Witch of Blackbird Pond." The 2025 State Showcase piece is set in 1687 colonial Connecticut, a time when Puritanical beliefs were the dominant way of life. Kit Tyler is a 16-year-old orphan who relocates from the island of Barbados to the community of Wethersfield and befriends Hannah Tupper, an outsider of the village. After a mysterious illness claims the lives of many Wethersfield children, the distraught townspeople cast blame upon Kit and Hannah, accusing them of practicing witchcraft. When the illness does not respond to traditional remedies, the townspeople decide to act, which results in Hannah Tupper's home being burned to the ground and Hannah narrowly escaping the colony with her life. After some time has passed, and her friend Kit Tyler has been tried and acquitted of witchcraft, Hannah returns to Wethersfield seeking justice. As a result, the Connecticut Colony presses charges of attempted murder, arson and criminal mischief against the individuals suspected of leading an angry mob to Hannah's home.
With the help of teachers and attorneys, students learn about the legal system and develop reading, research, writing and public speaking skills. Students must consider both sides of the case, as they will argue as both the prosecution and defense before a panel of volunteers who evaluate their performance.
Teams from the following schools will participate in the state showcase: Belpre Middle School (Washington County), Bethany School (Hamilton County), Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy (Hamilton County), Cornerstone Academy (Franklin County), Danville Middle School (Knox County), Dominion Middle School (Franklin County), Garfield Middle School (Cuyahoga County), Genoa Middle School (Delaware County), Harding Middle School (Cuyahoga County), Heritage Middle School (Delaware County), Indian Hill Middle School (Hamilton County), Jackson Memorial Middle School (Stark County), Kenston High School (Geauga County), Langston Middle School (Lorain County), Laurel School (Cuyahoga County), Lebanon Christian Middle School (Warren County), Menlo Park Academy (Cuyahoga County), Notre Dame Middle School (Geauga County), Otsego Middle School (Wood County), Perrysburg Junior High School (Wood County), Reading Community Middle School (Hamilton County), Seton Catholic School (Summit County), Shaker Heights Middle School (Cuyahoga County), St. Hilary School (Summit County), St. Matthew the Apostle (Franklin County), Walnut Springs Middle School (Franklin County), Wheelersburg Middle School (Scioto County) and Woodward Park Middle School (Franklin County).

Austrians endure shock, horror after gunman kills 10 at school
By Francois Murphy GRAZ, Austria (Reuters) -Austrians were dumbfounded by grief and horror after a 21-year-old gunman killed 10 people in a high school shooting spree on Tuesday morning, unleashing a new kind of violence to the Alpine country unaccustomed to such slayings. Parents of pupils, top government officials and local residents in the southern city of Graz were lost for words after the young man, who has not been named, opened fire at the school where he had recently been a pupil. "Terrible. There's nothing else to make of it, is there?" said Monika Leiner, a 55-year-old IT consultant who lives near the school. "I'm a bit older, and I've seen quite a few things but I can't remember (a shooting with) so many deaths." Police have given no motive for the killings though Austrian newspaper Kronen Zeitung said officers found a farewell letter during a search of the suspect's home. Authorities said the man did not graduate from the school and Austrian media published unconfirmed reports he had suffered from bullying. Hundreds of police rushed to the scene after shots rang out at around 10 a.m. Shortly afterwards the perpetrator was dead, having shot himself in a toilet, authorities said. The killings were the worst Austrian school shooting on record. The government declared three days of national mourning and political parties cancelled upcoming events. In the afternoon, people arrived to leave flowers and candles by the school. President Alexander Van der Bellen said it was hard to express what the country was feeling. "This horror cannot be put into words," he said. Long queues also formed outside a blood donation centre in Graz. "Today is a hard day for all of us in Graz. I'm here to (donate) my blood to help other people who need it," 25-year-old Stephanie Koenig told Reuters. Police cordoned off the school and few parents of pupils there have so far made their feelings public. The mother of one pupil told state broadcaster ORF that her son had called her during the shooting. "It's impossible to grasp," said the woman, who was not named by the broadcaster. "I was just happy that he was on the phone and that I could hear him. But now I keep thinking about how others are doing." "He just told me that he had to run out and that he'd hidden in the garden. Everything else is too much for me now, including everything else he said," she added. Nola, a 21-year-old student and local resident, told Reuters a friend of one of her friends was among the victims. "A friend of mine goes to that school. She found out that a friend of hers died," she said. "She called me immediately afterwards in tears and said 'Hannah is dead! Hannah is dead!' and her parents were also beside themselves."

22-Year-Old Woman Tragically Loses Legs Following Freak Accident In The Bahamas
A young woman celebrating her summa cum laude college graduation experienced a traumatic freak accident in The Bahamas that resulted in her legs being severed. When the boating incident occurred on May 12, Hannah Smith, 22, was allegedly on the first day of her trip. According to the Daily Mail, she and a friend, Brooklyn Pitre, were on a celebratory Carnival Sunrise cruise after graduating. The two were returning to the ship via a pontoon ferry after doing off-ship excursions. As the small boat docked around 3:55 p.m. at Nassau Cruise Port, Hannah found herself in the water. The ferry's propellers reportedly dragged the young woman under the water, then partially severed her legs and surrounded her in blood. Two of the boat's female passengers were able to pull Hannah out of the water, and she went to a local hospital. Two days later, the Memphis, Tennessee, native was transferred to a hospital back in the United States for emergency surgery. Updates provided by her family (shared on GoFundMe) note that Hannah has undergone over 10 surgeries in the two and a half weeks following the boating incident. Though she suffered some medical setbacks and doctors performed extensive procedures, the recent graduate has been pulling through. It remains unclear how exactly Hannah ended up in the water, as sources differ. The pontoon ferry's captain allegedly told local authorities that Hannah jumped into the water. Police claim that alcohol consumption possibly played a role in the tragic incident. However, the recent graduate's parents, Tracy and Marvin Smith, deny that their daughter was inebriated. The recent graduate and Delta Sigma Theta sorority member studied communications and graphic design at Miles College, a Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) institution in Alabama. A family member has created a GoFundMe to aid Hannah with her medical costs and recovery. At the beginning of the fundraiser's description, it describes Hannah as a young woman who is 'love' and 'light.' 'This boating accident will not define your life,' declared Hannah's family member in the GoFundMe's description. 'We need you to have many more birthdays, more holidays, more life experiences… While on what was supposed to be a beautiful trip to the Bahamas, Hannah was involved in a tragic accident that nearly claimed her life. Through the grace of God, she's still with us, but the road ahead is long, filled with surgeries, recovery, and overwhelming medical costs.' As of this reporting, the fundraiser has received over 1,200 donations. It's currently at over $50,500 of its $250,000 goal. A May 29 update on Hannah's well-being said, 'This journey is taking a physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual toll. Please keep her lifted in your thoughts and prayers. She is fighting!!!' In late March, the State Department updated its travel advisory for Americans traveling to The Bahamas. Missing California woman, 31, found dead in Arizona
(KTLA) — The body of a 31-year-old woman from California was discovered near a hiking trail in Scottsdale, Ariz., late last month, officials announced. Hannah Moody, described as a social media influencer by the Los Angeles Times, was first reported missing on May 21 just before 8 p.m. after friends said they had not heard from her and had been unable to reach her after she set off on a hike that day. In a news release, authorities with the Scottsdale Police Department responded to the trailhead where the 31-year-old had last been seen and found her vehicle still in the parking lot. 'Officers began search efforts on foot, with drones and assistance from a Phoenix Police Department helicopter,' the release stated. 'Search efforts continued for Hannah for approximately four and a half hours until around 11:30 p.m., when the search was called off for the evening.' The sheriff's air unit spotted Moody's body about 600 feet from the Gateway Trailhead of the McDowell Sonoran Preserve in Scottsdale at around 12 p.m. On her Instagram account, where she had amassed more than 45,000 followers, Moody's posts focused on what appeared to be a passion for hiking, fitness and her Christian beliefs. In reporting by The Times, the 31-year-old had lived in Los Angeles, Orange and Alameda counties, as well as in South Carolina. 'Scottsdale detectives and crime scene personnel will now conduct a thorough investigation to piece together what happened to Hannah and how she died,' officials said in the release. 'Our investigation will be in cooperation with the Maricopa County Office of the Medical Examiner, which will ultimately determine the cause of death.' Temperatures in the area where her body was found, including on the day she was discovered, routinely exceed 100 degrees by noon.
