Serum Institute of India holds 'Conquer HPV and Cancer Conclave' in Visakhapatnam
Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh) [India], June 14 (ANI): Serum Institute of India (SII) held the 'Conquer HPV and Cancer Conclave' in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, to spread awareness regarding the sexually transmitted infection Human Papillomavirus (HPV).
Dr B. Murli Santosh, consultant paediatrician and neonatologist, attended the conclave on Friday. Speaking to reporters, he said, '...Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer in Indian women, not only Indian women, across the globe, and annually, as per the statistics, close to 1,00,000 deaths are reported in India.'
Emphasising the HPV vaccine, he added, 'So one thing that the public needs to know is that there is a vaccine by which we can prevent this cancer and which has been readily available for the last 10 to 15 years. But the problem in India is that the awareness among the public... various reasons, cost constraints, or various misconceptions. The amount of vaccinations which the public are getting is very less. Now we are having Indian-made vaccines which are easily available and cost-effective. And once we can effectively vaccinate, this cancer is almost hundred per cent preventable. So, most of the time, we recommend early-age vaccinations, preferably at 9 to 14 years, in which they receive two doses, and at 15 to 45 years, in which they receive three doses. And once they receive the vaccination, most of the time they get 99% to 100% protection against these cancers.'
Speaking to ANI, Dr R Vidya Rama, professor of obstetrics and gynaecology in Andhra Medical College and the visiting consultant, Medicover Women and Child Hospitals, said, 'We have gathered here to talk about HPV vaccination. What are the recent changes in HPV vaccination? Previously this vaccination was advocated for girls to prevent cervical cancer, but now it's been proven that HPV is not only for cervical cancer but also for cancers in men, it is penile cancer, and it is also a cause for anal cancers and oropharyngeal cancers in both men and women.'
Elaborating on vaccination, Dr Rama said, 'So ideally, the vaccination to prevent these cancers should be given before sexual exposure. The best time to take the vaccine is between 9 and 14 years. When the immune response and protection will be maximum, and only two doses would be enough. But, if the girls and boys miss out their vaccination at the age below 15 years, they can take the vaccination even after 15 years. Previously, we had a vaccine made by an MNC only, which is a very effective and safe vaccine, but the only disadvantage with that particular vaccine is costly. Now we have a vaccine, a quadrivalent vaccine, which has been made by the Serum Institute of India...The biggest advantage is we have a vaccine which comes with a very affordable cost that is very important for our country to protect our girls and boys with a vaccine.'
SII, in collaboration with India's Department of Biotechnology (DBT) and Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC), recently developed India's first indigenous gender neutral quadrivalent HPV vaccine, Cervavac. The medical firm is holding a nationwide conclave to spread awareness regarding the vaccine. (ANI)

"Identification not possible without DNA examination": FSL Director on Ahmedabad plane crash
Ahmedabad (Gujarat) [India], June 14 (ANI): The Director of the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL), HP Sanghvi, on Saturday emphasised the critical need for DNA examination to identify the victims of the tragic Air India Flight crash bound for London, citing that the extreme heat from the blaze that erupted after the crash had made the traditional method of identification ineffective. Sanghvi detailed the ongoing efforts in collecting and processing the DNA samples from both the victims and their relatives for the identification process, noting that the intense heat from the crash had impacted the DNA in various parts of the victims' bodies, necessitating meticulous sample collection during postmortem. 'As all of you are aware of this unfortunate incident that happened in Ahmedabad where the plane crashed... the flame was having a very high temperature, and because of that, the identification of the person was not possible and hence the DNA examination is required and also this high temperature affects the DNA present in the various parts of the body. So, during the postmortem, it was essential that the right part of the body had been identified for the collection of the DNA sample,' Sanghvi stated. He revealed that all submitted samples have been processed at the FSL, with DNA profiles being generated despite the complex and time-consuming nature of the procedure, which takes 36 to 48 hours per sample. 'The forensic experts have also assisted the doctors with the collection of the DNA samples and also assisted in collecting the DNA samples from the relatives of the deceased persons. The sample has been submitted to the forensic labs. All the samples that have been submitted to FSL have been processed... Based on this DNA process, profiles have been obtained. But this process is very complex. It takes a lot of time - around 36 to 48 hours for one sample - but as this process has been completed batch-wise, a number of samples can be done at a time and the profile matching has started and the results are coming up,' he added. He noted that a team of 36 DNA experts at the Gujarat Forensic Science Laboratory, in collaboration with the National Forensic Science University, is working around the clock to match profiles and facilitate the handover of remains to families. 'Doctors and the police agencies are in the process of handing over the dead body of the deceased person to their relatives... This process is the utmost priority and the whole team of 36 DNA experts at the Gujarat Forensic Science lab is there for this task. Also, a similar exercise has been going on at the National Forensic Science University. They also say their experts are working on that, and we are working in collaboration with the coordination in the institute,' Sanghvi stated. Earlier on Thursday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that there was no chance of saving anyone in the plane crash because of the high temperature caused due to the burning of almost 1.25 lakh litres of fuel in the aircraft. Expressing condolences to family members of those killed, Shah said the exact number of deaths will be officially released only after DNA tests. 'The plane carried almost 125,000 litres of fuel, and due to the high temperature, there was no chance of saving anyone... I visited the crash site,' the Home Minister told the media. On Thursday, the Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner was en route to London from Ahmedabad when it crashed shortly after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhai Patel International Airport, ramming into a doctors' hostel of BJ Medical College in the Meghani Nagar area in Gujarat's Ahmedabad. There were 242 people on board, including 230 passengers and 12 crew members. Of the passengers, 241 died in the crash. The lone survivor, identified as Vishwashkumar Ramesh, a British national of Indian origin, sustained injuries and is undergoing treatment. (ANI)

Ahmedabad (Gujarat) [India], June 14 (ANI): Junior Doctor's Association of BJ Medical College on Saturday confirmed that four MBBS students lost their lives after the London-bound Air India flight rammed into the doctor's hostel shortly after taking off from the Ahmedabad airport on Thursday. In a statement, Junior Doctor's Association on Saturday said that the students were having lunch at the mess when the plane crashed into the building, killing four and injuring 20 MBBS students. Of the injured, 11 have been discharged. 'In reference to the recent plane crash incident, JDA- BJMC clarifies that a total of 4 MBBS students from B.J. Medical College, who were having lunch in the mess building, have sadly passed away. Out of the 20 MBBS students injured in the accident, 11 have been discharged with a stable condition,' the statement read. The association also urged people not to be misled by rumours of a higher death toll among students and resident doctors in the plane crash. 'Some individuals are spreading rumours suggesting a high death toll among medical college students and resident doctors. We appeal to everyone not to be misled by such misinformation and to refrain from spreading rumours further.' According to the association, four family members of super-speciality doctors who were residing in 'Atulyam' building in the college campus also died. 'Among the family members of Super Specialty doctors residing in the 'Atulyam' building, 4 have tragically died. Additionally, the wife of one resident doctor from the Super Specialty department has been injured and is currently under treatment. The condition of all admitted patients is stable and they are recovering quickly,' the statement read. Air India earlier confirmed the death of 241 people out of the 242 on board in the plane crash. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) issued an order to extend the scrutiny of the Boeing Dreamliner 787 series planes present in the Indian Aircraft fleet, said Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu Naidu further stated that around eight Boeing 787 Series aircraft have already been scrutinised and inspected with immediate urgency. Addressing a press conference here, the Union Civil Aviation Minister said, 'We have very strict safety standards in the the incident happened, we also felt that there is a need to do an extended surveillance of the Boeing 787 Series. DGCA has also given an order to do the extended surveillance for the Boeing 787 planes. There are 34 in our Indian aircraft fleet today. I believe that 8 have already been inspected, and with immediate urgency, all of them are going to be done.' (ANI)

IPSOWA camp stresses on early detection and regular health monitoring
Patna: The IPS Officers' Wives Association (IPSOWA) organised a women's health awareness programme on the Bihar Special Armed Police (BSAP)-5 campus on Friday. The event focused on the wives, daughters, and sisters of BSAP jawans. The awareness campaign was aimed at educating participants about health concerns faced by women and encourage proactive health measures such as preventive screenings, timely medical attention, regular gynaecological check-ups, and HPV vaccination for females aged between 9 and 45 years. As part of the initiative, free bone mineral density (BMD) checks and haemoglobin tests were conducted on-site. The event was presided over by Dr Nimisha Agarwal, director of Niramaya Centre for Women Care and Diagnostics, who addressed the attendees on the importance of early detection and regular health monitoring. The programme was held under the guidance of IPSOWA president Madhurima Raj and supported by the association's medical members, Dr Archana Gangwar, Dr Nidhi Prasad, Dr Premshila, and Dr Rubel, who were actively involved in facilitating the tests and consultations during the event. "This initiative is a sincere reflection of IPSOWA's commitment towards social responsibility and community engagement, especially in supporting the health and wellbeing of women in police families," said IPSOWA president Madhurima Raj.
