NEW YORK — Instant reactions from the Red Sox' 9-6 loss to the Yankees at Yankee Stadium on Friday:

2) Red Sox starter Walker Buehler gave up five runs on five hits (two homers) and one walk in a disastrous first inning. He pitched just 2 innings and allowed seven runs (five earned runs), seven hits and two walks while striking out two. He also hit a batter to force in a run with the bases loaded. His ERA jumped to 5.18 ERA.
3) Buehler walked leadoff hitter Trent Grisham and allowed a double to Aaron Judge to begin the game. He then got two quick outs and it looked like he might escape without allowing any runs. But Jazz Chisholm Jr. didn't let that happen, belting a 417-foot three-run home run to center field. Two batters later, Anthony Volpe hit a 369-foot two-run home run to right field.
4) Red Sox rookie Marcelo Mayer belted his first major league home run in the fifth inning. He connected on a 93.9 mph four-seam fastball that Yankees rookie starter Will Warren left right down the middle of the plate in the fifth inning. Mayer drove it 410 feet to right-center field. The solo shot left his bat with a 103.3 mph exit velocity.
5) Boston cut it to 8-4 in the sixth inning after Jarren Duran led off the inning with his MLB-leading seventh triple. Wilyer Abreu's sac fly to center field made it 8-2. Romy Gonzalez, who was pinch hitting for Mayer with the bases loaded, hit a two-run single to make it 8-4.

6) Rafael Devers narrowed the deficit to 9-6 in the seventh inning when he crushed a 419-foot two-run home run to right field. It was his 17th homer in 62 games at Yankee Stadium.
7) Zack Kelly (2 scoreless innings, four strikeouts) and Cooper Criswell (3 innings, one run) did a good job saving the bullpen. Brennan Bernardino also threw one inning and allowed a run.
8) The Red Sox and Yankees will play the second game of their three-game series at 7:35 p.m. Saturday. The game will be nationally televised on FOX. Boston lefty Garrett Crochet (5-4, 1.98 ERA) will start vs. lefty Ryan Yarbrough (3-0, 2.83 ERA).

Hyeseong Kim on fire to begin Dodgers career
Hyeseong Kim had a rough transition to major league pitching during spring training, prompting the Dodgers to start Kim's season with the Triple-A Oklahoma City Comets. The decision to give Kim more time to develop his swing and his approach in the minor leagues paid off when he was called up during the Dodgers' road trip in Atlanta, and he has been a bright spot despite receiving limited playing time over his first 21 games. Advertisement Kim enters the Dodgers' three game series against the New York Mets slashing .422/.458/.600 with a 200 wRC+, albeit in just 48 plate appearances, and is coming off a four hit performance in which he launched his second career home run against the New York Yankees on Saturday. Mirjan Swanson of the Orange County Register writes about Kim's immediate impact at the big league level, sharing how both players and Dave Roberts feel about his presence within the team. 'Hyeseong, there's just something about him,' Roberts said. 'That youthful enthusiasm, that joy, he's just happy to be out there, happy to be on the team, and guys feed off the energy, and he takes really good at-bats, he competes. And, you know, giving him some runway, he's making good on and taking advantage of it.' Swanson also notes that Kim will be in the starting lineup on Monday against the Mets. Links Yoshinobu Yamamoto had a breakthrough start in Game 2 of the World Series against the Yankees, allowing just one run through 6 1⁄ 3 innings while recording the win. His next start against New York saw him toss his worst start of the 2025 season, as he failed to complete four full innings for the first time this year. Advertisement Yamamoto credited his disappointing outing on Sunday to a lack of command on his pitches, per Jack Harris of the Los Angeles Times. 'I was not being able to control my pitches,' Yamamoto said through interpreter Yoshihiro Sonoda. 'During the game, I was trying to make an adjustment, but … I could not get it back, my stuff.' During Friday's game against the Yankees, a fan was struck by a chunk of concrete that fell from the stadium reserve level. The Dodgers installed a protective netting surrounding the area before Saturday's game, reports Branden Kuty of the Athletic, and the fan was in pain but avoided any serious injury. More from

White Sox lose to Astros, fall to 7-28 on road
Isaac Paredes hit a solo homer and Jose Altuve doubled twice and had two RBIs to lead the Houston Astros over the Chicago White Sox 4-3 on Thursday night. Houston led 4-2 entering the ninth before Mike Tauchman homered to right field off closer Josh Hader to get Chicago within 4-3. There were two outs when Miguel Vargas narrowly missed a homer on a double off the wall in left field. But Hader struck out Austin Slater to improve to 18 of 18 on save opportunities this season. Paredes appeared to injure his leg trying to beat out a double play in the seventh inning and was replaced at third base in the eighth. There was no immediate postgame update. The Astros led by one with one out in the fifth when Paredes connected on his shot to left-center off Davis Martin (2-7) to make it 4-2. Martin yielded seven hits and four runs with five strikeouts in six innings. Houston starter Framber Valdez (7-4) allowed seven hits and two runs with a season-high 12 strikeouts in five innings. Edgar Quero had three hits and two RBIs and Vargas had two doubles and a triple for the White Sox, who fell to 7-28 on the road. Altuve, who is primarily playing left field this season after spending his first 14 seasons at second base, made a leaping grab near the wall in left field in the seventh to rob Chase Meidroth of extra bases. Key moment Hader's strikeout of Slater to end it. Key stat Hader has the most saves without a blown save in the majors this season and his streak is the second longest in franchise history to start a season behind a 21-game streak by Dave Smith in 1989. Up next The White Sox open a three-game series at Texas and the Astros play the opener of a three-game series against Minnesota on Friday.
