Wheeler wants to 'follow in Rose's footsteps'
Amateur golfer Rob Wheeler said he was "over the moon" to make it through to final qualifying for the upcoming Open Championship. The 23-year-old from Aldershot hopes to emulate the path of fellow North Hants club member and previous major winner Justin Rose. On Monday around 2,000 players competed across 15 venues with each 18-hole event having between seven and 10 qualification spots for final qualifying to make it to Royal Portrush in July.Next week Wheeler and over 250 others will compete for the final 20 spots to play in the Championship. After shooting an impressive 68 (-2) and being told that he had made it to the final round, Wheeler turned on his phone to see Olympic gold medallist and 2013 US Open winner Rose had posted on instagram, external to congratulate him. "I want to represent the club really well going forward," Wheeler said."Justin was a member at North Hants and it feels like I'm kind of following in his footsteps."I won the [club championship] Justin Rose Trophy when I was younger and he presented the trophy to me. It was pretty cool to see his message and it brought a lot of emotions forward, it was so good."
In 1988, as a 17-year-old amateur golfer, Rose managed a fourth-placed finish at The Open at the Royal Birkdale.He finished runner-up in 2018 and will compete at Portrush next month. After missing out on final qualifying by just one shot in the previous two years, Wheeler was able to get across the line as he posted the second best round of the day."I was over the moon and with it being at North Hants I had a decent home advantage," he said."After the front nine I was three under and I went into the back nine quite comfortable and I played my own game, I made a three-footer on the 18th and the tension just released, I was buzzing."Final qualifying will take place on 1 July at just four courses where players have a chance to book their spot at The 153rd Open.Thirty-six holes at Burnham & Berrow, Dundonald Links, Royal Cinque Ports and West Lancashire will decide the final places."I want to turn pro eventually and play golf for a living, that's my long-term ambition," said Wheeler. "Hopefully making the final qualifying is one step closer to making that dream a reality."

Arsenal 'to complete first signing of the summer this week' as they progress in cut-price deal for Chelsea star
Arsenal are set to complete their first signing of the summer transfer window this week, according to a report. The Gunners are looking to improve their fortunes as they again went trophyless last season, finishing runners up in the Premier League and falling at the semi-final stage in the Champions League. They are in their first window under new sporting director Andrea Berta, and have been chasing a striker as they look to plug a gap that has long escaped them at the top end of the pitch. This week, though, according to BBC Sport, Mikel Arteta 's side will instead complete the signing of a goalkeeper that is expected to be back-up to David Raya. That goalkeeper is Kepa Arrizabalaga, who joined the Blues in 2017 but has had a difficult time at the club, and is now finally set to depart on a permanent basis. If the move is completed, he will become the first Gunners signing of the summer and play back-up to countryman David Raya between the sticks. The 30-year-old - who has a staggeringly low £5million release clause - spent last season on loan with Bournemouth and kept eight clean sheets in his 31 Premier League appearances. Back in 2018, the Blues splashed out £72m on Kepa to snap him up from Athletic Bilbao, which represented a world record fee for a goalkeeper. Mikel Arteta is believed to be keen on hiring a deputy to his current No 1 in between the sticks. As such, Arsenal are close to making Arrizabalaga their latest arrival at the club ahead of bigger moves this summer. Arrizabalaga's meagre fee will see him move on from Chelsea for a fee around 14 times less than his initial move to the west London club. Last in action for Chelsea in 2023, Arrizabalaga featured 163 times for the club, keeping 59 clean sheets and winning four major honours. The Spaniard was also sent out on loan to Real Madrid in 2023, making 14 appearances. After a successful loan spell, Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola expressed an interest in keeping Arrizabalaga at the club. 'I think it is a matter of negotiating with Kepa himself and with Chelsea,' he said. 'I think both sides are very happy with his loan spell.' But it appears Arsenal have beaten the Cherries to Arrizabalaga's signing, making the shot-stopper their first under Berta ahead of potential moves for the likes of Benjamin Sesko and Viktor Gyokeres later on this summer.

Newcastle have 'three transfer alternatives' after £45m bid for Anthony Elanga was rejected, including Premier League star with £85m release clause
Newcastle have 'three players being considered as alternatives' to Anthony Elanga, after the club had a £45million bid rejected for the Nottingham Forest winger. Mail Sport understands Forest received the offer in the morning but rejected it quickly and have no intention of selling the Sweden international. Newcastle are weighing up whether to submit another bid for Elanga or pursue other targets. Mail Sport exclusively revealed that the Magpies enquired about him earlier this month, having had an approach snubbed last summer. Forest value Elanga at £60m and it would be a surprise if Newcastle were to meet the asking price. But if the club decide not to increase their offer to Forest for Elanga, there are a trio of other attacking stars on the club's radar, according to the Mirror. Johan Bakayoko of PSV, Borussia Dortmund 's Karim Adeyemi is another and West Ham star Mohammad Kudus is the third, says the report. Bakayoko, a Belgian right-winger, is just 21 but has established himself as a star in the Netherlands. The 23-year-old can play as a forward or out wide, netting 12 times last term and averaging a goal every two games in the Champions League. Kudus is more of a known quantity and West Ham would be willing to sell, though his release clause of £85million could put buyers off. His return of five goals and three assists in the Premier League last season for a poor Hammers side may also deter potential suitors. As it stands, Howe is looking for more competition for Jacob Murphy and Harvey Barnes on the right side, especially with Newcastle fighting on all fronts.
