SUPERMAN's New Theme Channels John Williams with a Modern Twist — GeekTyrant
At a press event in Manila for Superman , fans got to hear a longer cut of the film's theme. It's essentially a remix of John Williams' iconic Superman: The Movie score, now charged with a subtle electric guitar that adds some modern bite while still honoring the legacy of the original.
We've heard small pieces of it in the trailers, but this new version gives us a fuller taste of what director James Gunn and composer John Murphy are aiming for in DC Studios' big reboot.
Gunn has never been shy about his love for Richard Donner's original films and the legendary score that defined a generation. In fact, he's been upfront about making the Williams theme a cornerstone of the reboot from the start:
'I knew from the beginning what I wanted to do with the music. I thought about it a lot, 'Are we going to do something completely different? Are we going to use the [John] Williams' theme?'
'That soundtrack is one of my favorite soundtracks of all time, and when I was a kid, really... the thing I loved the most about the movie was the music. That was the thing I took home with me more than anything else."
Rather than going full retro, Gunn and Murphy aimed for something that threads the needle between reverence and reinvention:
'But I knew we were doing something that was harkening back to the past but also looking forward to the future, and so it was about finding that balance.
'John Murphy is a composer who I love working with, and he started working on the music before the script was even finished... I said, 'I want to use a version of the Williams' theme, but I want to do our own version of it.' So, that's what you hear.'
The decision to remix instead of reinvent may not satisfy everyone, but it's undeniably effective at evoking the feeling of classic heroism and nostalgia with a fresh coat of paint.
Superman is 'set in a world very different from ours and far removed from the DCEU. Heroes have been around for ages, and we'll see how it affected this world's history and has shaped the DCU."
Superman flies into theaters on July 11, 2025.

The Best New Netflix Movie Has Set A Rotten Tomatoes Score Record
Kpop Demon Hunters Netflix original movies are extremely hit or miss as the service continues its apparent attempt to make movie theaters obsolete, but now? There's a new movie it's just released that has set an overall Rotten Tomatoes record. The movie is KPop Demon Hunters, which appears to have the highest combined critic and audience score for a Netflix original production, a record for the service. Whatever good Netflix original movie you might hit this mark, it will likely fall short. Here are some of Netflix's most high-profile films, and you'll see that they're either way off or they miss by a few points. KPop Demon Hunters It's possible these numbers don't hold for KPop Demon Hunters, but for now, here we are. It seems like a random movie to do this well, I suppose, but there are a whole lot of KPop fans out there, a whole lot of animation fans out there, and I suppose a whole lot of demon hunter fans. Here's the synopsis of the film: The film is directed by Chris Appelhans and Maggie Kang, both industry figures who have largely worked in art departments rather than directing projects. The film stars the likes of Arden Cho, May Hong and Ji-young Yoo. Cho may be the most well-known with lengthy roles in shows like Chicago Med and Teen Wolf. KPop Demon Hunters debuted at #1 in Netflix's top 10 list, but it has been unseated rather quickly by The Intern, the 2015 Robert De Niro, Anne Hathaway movie that stands the test of time and has a wide-ranging appeal to the broader Netflix audience. We'll see how the scores hold up long term, but for now, KPop Demon Hunters is on top against Oscar-winners and action blockbusters. Follow me on Twitter, YouTube, Bluesky and Instagram. Pick up my sci-fi novels the Herokiller series and The Earthborn Trilogy.

James Gunn Talks Supergirl, Lobo, Constantine, and Reveals He's Not a Kyle Rayner Guy — GeekTyrant
James Gunn has got a long road ahead of him as he builds up the DC Universe, and he's had heavy involvement with Creature Commandos , which set things in motion, and Superman and Peacemaker Season 2, which are right around the corner, but we'll start to see that universe widen, with other storytellers stepping into the spotlight. That includes Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow , directed by Cruella and I, Tonya filmmaker Craig Gillespie. Gunn recently opened up in a new DC Showcase interview about the state of the movie, the vibe of its characters, and how Jason Momoa's Lobo brings it all together. "Craig is such a joy to work with. I was really excited to get to work with him, and he's been just a dream in terms of for his you have an idea that you believe, you really fight for it." As for the casting of Milly Alcock, that came before Gillespie boarded the project. According to Gunn, she was always his top pick for Kara Zor-El. "I wanted her to be this little pixie-ish, but very attitudinal character. [Milly] was the first person I brought up." Gillespie also pushed for a more terrifying take on Krem of the Yellow Hills, the villain from the Woman of Tomorrow comic. Gunn teased that Krem, played by Matthias Schoenaerts, will be a real standout. "Dude, wait till you see how scary he is in the movie," Gunn said. He called Schoenaerts "scary," "creepy," and "cool" in the role. But the real curveball is Lobo. Momoa is swapping his Aquaman trident for a space bike, playing the wild, intergalactic bounty hunter. And according to Gunn, he's essential to making Supergirl work as a movie. "The comic is very much a bunch of little stories. We needed to create one throughline, one three-act story, so Lobo helps us to do that." Elsewhere in the interview, one of the hosts shared his favorite DC characters with Gunn, which include Kyle Rayner, John Constantine, and Mister Miracle. The latter is getting his own animated series, and while Gunn's a fan of Hellblazer, he's less keen on Kyle. "I like all three of those characters. The second two, I'm a way bigger fan of. I've been online enough to know everyone has their favorite Green Lantern. I'm a Guy guy, right?" He went on to talk about why Constantine, in particular, resonates with him. "Constantine, I'm actually a pretty huge fan of. I read every Hellblazer comic as it was coming out. He's a great character, and I like that approach to magic where it's not too overwhelming and he's too powerful." As for Kyle Rayner? Don't hold your breath. Gunn's focus seems to be on Hal Jordan, John Stewart, and, of course, Guy Gardner.
