Oscar Wilde emerged as Carlota Barrera's latest muse. The designer imagined an entire narrative around the author, one that unfolded not only through the garments but via a travel diary that accompanied the collection. At its center was a Dorian Gray-esque protagonist who took us on an immersive journey; by night, he stepped out in a crisply starched shirt and an impeccably tailored tuxedo—a pristine elegance that slowly faded as the hours went by, through rolled-up sleeves and loosened collars. 'It's about the journey of the garments, how they transform, as he does, throughout the night,' Barrera explained. Woven into this metamorphosis was a meditation on masculinity, femininity, and the inexorable passage of time.
At their core, the pieces reflected how clothing evolves with us. 'I want to create collections with a life of their own—because life, after all, is revealed through the smallest gestures,' Barrera shared. It's a concept the brand has been exploring over several seasons. At first glance, the garments appear to be torn or distressed, but a closer look reveals an almost obsessive precision in their construction. 'That's the playful, punk aspect of it all,' she said. 'It might look like everything's been ripped apart, but every detail has been carefully considered.'
Duality lies at the heart of Barrera's vision, a balance of knowing the rules of tailoring and knowing when to break them. 'There's a phrase that captures the essence of the collection,' she noted. ''Before the beginning of great brilliance, there must be chaos.'' And indeed, nothing was quite what it seemed: unexpected double collars, sashes that transformed into belts, cufflinks with whale motifs on them, shirts teetering on the brink of slipping off, and jackets worn inside-out to reveal their lining. It was a collection where garments intertwined and interacted, each marked by a subtle, subversive twist.

Anyone with a passing interest in fashion knows that Central Saint Martins is the conduit through which generations of talent from around the world have passed on their way to becoming some of the most influential designers in the world. In particular, the head-spinning list of alumni from the M.A. course is a who's who of era-defining stars; but just as remarkable about this London institution are the hundreds of graduates each year from across every fashion-related pathway who go on to work behind the scenes in the industry, whether as senior talent in the ateliers of major Paris fashion houses, or across the numerous other, less-remarked-upon facets that make up the industry, from media to event production. And many of those up-and-comers come from the B.A. course, which is better known as a forum where young designers are yet to worry about the pressures of commercial constraints, and can instead let their freak flags fly. The latest showcase of that spirit, held in the cavernous central hall of the former granary building in King's Cross that is now the university's hub, didn't disappoint on the wackiness front: Andy Pomarico's eye-popping carnival floats festooned with flotsam and jetsam found on dumpster dives, with a witchy model in green body paint swinging through a doorway in the center, certainly saw to that; as did Linus Stueben's Y2K-on-acid extravaganza that featured fabric patches resembling toilet rolls stuck to the heels of furry boots, track pants that were pulled down to the calves and then stitched to stay there, and a model walking a robot dog on a leash—complete with a kitschy pink collar, naturally. (A special mention, too, for Matthew David Andrews's kaleidoscopic, wind-blown ladies caught in inclement weather, whose hats turned out to be hiding mini water sprinklers; what could have felt gimmicky ended up having an eerily post-apocalyptic air.) Yet many of the most interesting collections threaded the needle between high visual impact and more subtle messaging. Just take Timisola Shasanya's fascinating eye for proportion, warping scale and shape—shirts piled up around the neck like a kind of shrug, or a top that was artfully draped to rise up behind the model on a six-foot long rod like a kind of ship's sail—to create pieces that spoke to a childhood spent between Lagos and London, as well as to wider conversations around migration, all achieved in supremely elegant style. Or the refined playfulness of Marie Schulze's grown-up outerwear crafted from wide strips of raw silk, streams of fabric bursting from handbags or through the toes of shoes to the sound of a manic orchestral soundtrack.

What makes Antonio Marras a unique presence in fashion is his ability to tell stories imbued with visceral authenticity.'Flying over Porto Conte with Antoine and Consuelo' is a journey that begins and ends in Alghero, the Sardinian city where the Marras family has its roots. 'This land is an inexhaustible source of richness, always offering stories we can draw from,' the designer said. Antoine de Saint-Exupéry—the famous French writer and aviator—spent the final months of his life in Alghero, and Marras's resort collection was born from imagining that his beloved wife Consuelo Suncín-Sandoval Zeceña de Gómez joined him there by air, flying the very same aircraft her husband used during his missions. A Salvadoran writer, painter, sculptor, and artist, she studied art in San Francisco. In Mexico, she met Diego Rivera; in Paris, she spent time with André Breton, Marcel Duchamp, Balthus, Max Ernst, and Picasso. Salvador Dalí was one of her dearest friends. In the United States, she opened her home to Ingrid Bergman, Jean Gabin, Greta Garbo, Marlene Dietrich, and Jean Renoir. She was the inspiration for The Little Prince, and in this collection, Marras imagined the wardrobe she would have packed for a journey to an island where the wind tousles your hair. Embodying the romanticism of a vaguely dandyish femininity, the collection takes shape through embroidered pinstripes, damask fabrics, and plaid cottons; rubberized flowers and aged-effect leathers; sculpted silhouettes, hidden pleats, and balloon volumes; faded denim, kimonos, and sheer fabrics. Faux furs are made of silk, knitwear is adorned with appliqués evoking a starry sky or worked in jacquard depicting a postcard of the dome of San Michele in Alghero, while patchworks of floral prints recall the island's wild flora. The colors reflect a landscape seen from above, where nature spreads across the warm tones of the earth and the airy blues of the sky; a bordeaux shade stitches it all together.
