Mumbai airport, Taj Hotel receive bomb threat over Afzal Guru hanging
The Mumbai Police have received a threat email, warning of bomb attacks at two major city landmarks, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport and the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel. The email claimed that the hanging of parliament attack mastermind was 'unjust', The Indian Express reported.
Taking note of this, security teams immediately carried out checks at both the airport and the hotel, but nothing suspicious was found.
The report said that the email was sent from the id tviduthalai_puli_vellum@outlook.com to the official email of the airport police station on Thursday morning. Even as Mumbai is already on high alert due to recent tensions between India and Pakistan, the administration has been conducting security drills across several key locations.
In the email, the sender cited 'unjust hanging of Afzal Guru and Savakku Shankar' as the motive behind the threat. Afzal Guru was executed on February 9, 2013 for his role in the 2001 Parliament attack, but reference to Savakku Shankar is factually incorrect. Shankar, a former clerk who became known for exposing corruption, is still alive and currently active as a YouTuber and social activist. He recently filed a public interest litigation in the Madras High Court seeking a CBI probe into alleged irregularities in schemes meant for manual scavengers, the Indian Express report stated.
The Mumbai Police has filed a case against the sender of the email and is now working to trace the origin of the message through its digital footprint, the report said.
Just last week, a similar bomb threat was reported at the disaster control room of the Maharashtra Secretariat and the police.
The Taj Hotel has been one of India's most well-known five-star hotels. On 26 November 2008, Mumbai witnessed attacks at various places, including Taj, by Pakistan-sponsored terrorists, resulting in the deaths of 167 people and injuring over 250. The hotel is protected by tight, round-the-clock security both inside and out.
Mumbai's airport, which enroutes thousands of domestic and international travellers each day, is a sensitive location.
The police are thoroughly investigating the incident and are working with cyber experts to identify the person behind the email.

Salt Lake woman loses 8.8L in digi-arrest fraud
1 2 Kolkata: A 63-year-old woman from Salt Lake fell victim to digital-arrest fraud in which she received WhatsApp video extortion calls in the name of Mumbai Police and the ED, losing Rs 8.8 lakh. She then continued to suffer from identity theft and psychological manipulation, where the scammers contacted her relatives on WhatsApp video calls, recorded their faces and forwarded them on WhatsApp groups. "The victim's contacts received unexpected video calls through WhatsApp. The scammers recorded their faces during these calls and subsequently circulated the images in various WhatsApp groups, creating panic among her social circle," said a senior officer quoting the complaint. According to the FIR, the perpetrators first contacted the victim on May 28, posing as CBI and ED officials from Mumbai. They claimed that an arrest warrant was issued against her for alleged money-laundering activities. "I received repeated calls and a WhatsApp video call from someone posing as a crime branch officer from Mumbai. During the call, he asked if my Aadhaar card was lost and whether copies were submitted in Mumbai. A person in a police uniform with an official-looking background appeared and demanded I isolate myself, citing sensitive charges. I was coerced to remain on the call and misled into believing that there were multiple criminal cases filed against me, including a shoot-at-sight order on my family, causing me extreme distress and fear," said the victim. Banerjee was coerced into transferring money thrice — Rs 2.2 lakh to a private bank in Varanasi, Rs 3.5 lakh to an account in Bangalore, and Rs 3.1 lakh to an account in Pune. The situation escalated on June 3 when the criminals hacked the victim's WhatsApp account and began targeting her contacts. "This is a new modus operandi where scammers combine financial fraud with social engineering and identity theft," explained an officer. The fraud came to light when a family friend visited the victim and found her still on call with the fraudsters. The criminals immediately disconnected upon hearing his voice.

Government strengthening IT cells to counter terrorist propaganda on social media: Union Home Secretary
The government is strengthening Information Technology (IT) cells and cybersurveillance to counter terrorist propaganda being spread on social media, Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan said on Wednesday. He said terrorists were using social media and advanced drone technology 'not just for surveillance and espionage, but also to carry out pinpointed and focused attacks.' He said, 'Some countries and some communities associate actions in the name of terrorism with either identity or with faith,' and in doing so, they tarnish the very idea of humanity and the 'problem needs to be eradicated from its roots.' The official said the government had finalised a 25-point integrated plan to curb the financial sources of terrorism, which included 'jihadi terrorism, insurgency in the northeast, fake currency and narcotics' and police and other investigating agencies were encouraged to 'not hesitate to use strict provisions under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA)' in all cases where it was necessary. He said 40 groups had been proscribed as terror organisations by India. While delivering the valedictory address at the 23rd National Security Guard's (NSG) Counter-Terror International Seminar, which was attended by 50 foreign delegates, Mr. Mohan said 'spontaneous war on the cyber front' is an important part of the government's strategy to counter terrorism where social media is used 'to radicalise youth whose minds are still shaping' and to spread disinformation and misinformation. Also Read | Operation Sindoor: Pakistan has unleashed a disinformation offensive, says govt 'Terrorist groups are leveraging social media and online propaganda, not only to mobilise their sympathisers, but also to mislead and influence youth who are radicalised or who do not have the full perspective of this entire game that is being played on them. Increasingly, encrypted devices are being used, different kinds of Apps are being used to conceal their identities. Even in the radar of our security agencies, this makes it much harder for us to track their conversations or intercept their plans, and it also makes the task of pre-empting their actions significantly challenging.' He called for global cooperation, sharing technological solutions and public awareness to end the menace of terrorism. He said Naxalism was now confined to 20 districts against 200 districts few years ago. 'We have to go beyond conventional methods and prepare comprehensive and forward-looking strategies as the only objective of terrorism is to spread violence and fear,' the Home Secretary said. He added that Pahalgam terrorist attack was one of the most horrific incidents that India had faced and any assault on its peace or sovereignty would not be tolerated. 'Whoever attempts such an act has to pay the price. And this is precisely what Operation Sindoor was ....precise military strikes on terrorist hideouts in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. We successfully destroyed the main operational bases of terrorist organisations. This stands as a testament to our military skill, to our professional strength, not only of armed forces, but also of our border guarding forces,' Mr. Mohan said.
