KOTA KINABALU, May 5 (Bernama) -- Internet connectivity in Sabah's major tourism destinations is generally reliable, though rural tourist spots still face coverage challenges as the state prepares for Visit Malaysia 2026.
State Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Christina Liew confirmed that popular tourist areas like Kinabalu Park experience good network coverage, with visitors facing minimal connectivity issues.
"Even at Sayat-Sayat Hut, the highest shelter on Mount Kinabalu, tourists can enjoy excellent internet quality," Liew told Bernama.
However, she highlighted concerns about internet connectivity in rural areas, where many tourism attractions are located, noting that improvements are necessary to enhance visitor experience.
Liew called on telecommunications companies to enhance their infrastructure and service quality, particularly in areas that attract high tourist traffic.
On April 26, Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil called on the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission and telecommunications companies to review and formulate immediate solutions to improve internet quality in Sabah's tourism areas, especially in preparation for Visit Malaysia 2026.
This is to ensure that tourists can benefit from fast internet to share their experiences about the country's beauty, particularly in Sabah, while also enjoying top-notch service.
Consumers Front of Sabah president Nordin Thani said his organisation had repeatedly raised this issue with both government and private agencies, urging them to collaborate with telecommunications service providers to resolve it.

Telcos must rethink tactics

Published on: Tuesday, June 10, 2025 Published on: Tue, Jun 10, 2025 By: Bernama Text Size: 'No provider currently excels as a 'rewards champion', and most compete by matching features such as unlimited data and 5G access - providers that combine strong network quality, value pricing, innovative features, and compelling rewards stand to gain significant market share,' it said. Kuala Lumpur: Malaysian telecommunication companies (telcos) are advised to move beyond traditional tactics and design bold, digital-first strategies that resonate with today's discerning consumers to win in the mature and evolving domestic market, according to a study. A report from GrowthOps Asia noted that the nation's telecommunications industry is undergoing a profound transformation, driven by market convergence, the nationwide 5G rollout, regulatory shifts, and major infrastructure investments. Advertisement The report, entitled 'Winning in Malaysia's Mature Telco Market', revealed that the country's telco market is now highly saturated and competitive, with mobile connections exceeding 129 per cent of the population. 'We are at a pivotal moment in the telco market, where consumers are no longer just looking for connectivity - they want a single, inclusive provider that delivers a suite of services and meaningful value-adds. 'The players who pair innovative products with sharp, relevant go-to-market strategies will be the ones that win,' said GrowthOps Malaysia general manager Chris Greenough in a statement to Bernama. The report also stated that the market is polarised with CelcomDigi Bhd emerging as the dominant leader, holding an estimated 40 per cent market share following its 2022 merger, while Maxis Bhd is positioned as a premium provider, emphasising network quality and loyalty perks. In addition, a cluster of challengers like U Mobile Sdn Bhd and Unifi by Telekom Malaysia Bhd are competing aggressively on value and plan innovation. 'Consumer perceptions revealed that while network quality and price remain key decision factors, sentiment towards loyalty rewards programs could create an industry-wide opportunity for differentiation. 'No provider currently excels as a 'rewards champion', and most compete by matching features such as unlimited data and 5G access - providers that combine strong network quality, value pricing, innovative features, and compelling rewards stand to gain significant market share,' it said. The report further emphasised strategic white spaces for growth, including targeting underserved urban and rural segments, capturing younger digital-first consumers, leveraging multi-channel engagement, and embracing emerging subscription models. 'It also underscores the strong correlation between brand awareness, share of voice, and market share, emphasising the importance of digital presence and customer engagement in maintaining competitive advantage. 'Telco brands that understand these shifting preferences, act on regional and generational nuances, and double down on clarity, convenience, and credible communication will be the ones to lead Malaysia's next wave of mobile loyalty and growth,' said the report. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Ringgit flat against the greenback

KUALA LUMPUR: The ringgit traded in a narrow range against the US dollar yesterday amid cautious sentiment in the currency market ahead of the US-China trade talks, says an analyst. At 6pm, the local note made a small retreat to 4.2290/2345 against the greenback compared to last Friday's close of 4.2270/2360. Market participants were awaiting the outcome of the trade negotiation between the two economic superpowers, said the analyst. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid noted that China's exports fell to 4.8% in May from 8.1% in the previous month, with exports to the United States contracting 34.5% in May from a contraction of 21%. 'This suggests that the tariff shocks have taken a toll on bilateral trade between the United States and China,' he told Bernama.

Around 31,600 Malaysians from all states and from all walks of life were flown to Saudi Arabia for their Haj by Tabung Haji on 100 chartered flights. — Bernama MORE than two million Muslims gathered in Mecca this year for the Haj pilgrimage even as temperatures soared to 47°C. Of that number, 31,600 were Malaysians, coming from all states and from all walks of life, and ranging in age from 16 to 83 years old; they were all flown in by Tabung Haji on 100 chartered flights. Tabung Haji's Department of Haj head Hisham Harun said that this year, 632 personnel involved came from a cross-section of sectors, including hostels and zones management, healthcare, religious guidance for Haj and visits, finance, media, transportation, catering, baggage handling, customer service, and more. 'This is to cater to all the needs of the Malaysian pilgrims – from their lodgings to 42 menus of Malaysian food,' said Hisham, who was completely hands-on and on the ground assisting pilgrims throughout the Haj period. This year marked the strictest Haj by Saudi Arabia authorities – only the season during the Covid-19 lockdown was stricter – as the guardian of the Holy Land attempted to make this the safest Haj ever, with the lowest number of deaths. Following the tagline 'No Haj without Nusuk' – referring to the official digital platform that manages pilgrimages; 'nusuk' means permit in Arabic – security officials scanned the QR codes of everyone's big square tag at all checkpoints throughout Mecca and various entrances to the Grand Holy Mosque. Malaysia's Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar stressed that such rules were made to ensure the safety of Haj pilgrims remains the topmost priority. Mohd Na'im giving his Khutbah Arafah to Malaysian pilgrims. He says that strict rules have been implemented to ensure the safety of Haj pilgrims remains the topmost priority. — Bernama Saudi authorities also ordered a lockdown at midday during the pinnacle period of Day of Arafah to avoid deaths – every year, this is the day most deaths occur as the elderly and vulnerable attempt to walk in the midday sun to the various holy sites.
