T20 Mumbai League 2025: Shams Mulani-led Aakash Tigers MWS secure first win in 5-over thriller
Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], June 7 (ANI): Shams Mulani-led Aakash Tigers MWS rode a power-packed batting performance to pip Prithvi Shaw's North Mumbai Panthers by 22 runs in a rain-hit T20 Mumbai League 2025 Season 3 contest at the Wankhede Stadium here on Saturday. With heavy rain forcing a delayed start, the match was reduced to five overs a side.
Chasing a challenging target of 67 runs on a pitch that was offering quite a fair bit of movement, the Panthers were off to a cautious start. With only 10 runs coming off the first two overs, Panthers openers Shaw and Divyaansh Saxena tried to force the pace but were pegged back by some incisive bowling and the slow outfield, according to the T20 Mumbai League press release.
With the pressure building up, a visibility frustrated Shaw tried to smash a Sylvester DSouza over long off but was outfoxed by the lack of pace and only managed to offer an easy skier to his opposite number Shams Mulani. As Shaw trudged off the field, the Panthers' hopes of an unlikely win seemed to depart along with him, with the chase coming to a tame end at 45/2.
Earlier, asked to bat first, the Tigers successfully maintained a high scoring rate despite being hampered by the loss of wickets at regular intervals. However, the in-form duo of Mulani (12) and Arjun Dani (10) took the Tigers to 66/7.
The rain gods played spoilsport with Saturday's opening game as the much-anticipated clash between Bandra Blasters led by Team India star Suryakumar Yadav and Triumphs Knights MNE was washed out due to a torrential downpour. The large number of cricket fans at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai were left disappointed as the match had shaped up into an absorbing contest.
Asked to bat first, the Bandra Blasters posted 192/7 in their 20 overs thanks to a quickfire half-century by opener Suved Parkar. Parkar repeatedly brought the sizeable crowd to their feet during his entertaining knock, needing just 37 balls to smash his way to 69 runs with the help of eight boundaries and three sixes.
The right-hander was finally sent on his way when he misjudged the bounce of an outswinger by Knights pacer Minad Manjrekar, with Jay Jain latching on to the top edge at third man. Shyamsundar Keshkamat (41) and Vikrant Auti added 62 runs between them before the former perished while going for one big shot too many.
The Knights bowlers then smothered the Mumbai lower order with wickets at regular intervals to restrict the Blasters to apply the brakes on the scoring rate.
Faced with a stiff target, the Knights suffered a setback in the very first over when opener Siddhant Aadhhathrao was caught at the boundary. However, the celebrations in the Bandra Blasters camp had hardly died down when the heavens opened up, forcing the players and match officials to scamper off the field. (ANI)

'It's played over a longer period of time and you've just got to win big moments in the game as well. Yes, there will be that tag [chokers] that gets thrown our way until we win a trophy,' he said. 'You're not going to get rid of the tag. Is it deserving on these youngsters coming through? No, it's almost like they're carrying the burden of what happened in previous years, which is always going to be tough on them, but they're the ones in control of their futures at the moment,' he added. For Boucher, South Africa youngsters Ryan Rickelton and Tristan Stubbs are two youngsters who could be the key to their success in the pulsating contest that kicks off on Wednesday. 'Ryan Rickelton has been playing nicely for Mumbai Indians (MI) and he was actually on the tour that we went to England [in 2022] as well. He's actually played quite a few games in England as well, so he'll know the conditions,' Boucher said. 'And Tristan Stubbs has come back and played a lot of domestic cricket and basically forced his way into the Test side because of the runs that he's got. On paper, Australia will probably feel that they've got a better batting line-up than what we have, but have we got the attitude to go out there and in a one-off game, just leave it all out there? Absolutely,' he added. 21st Delhi International Open Grandmasters Chess Tournament inaugurated; Minister Parvesh Verma lauds young talent
New Delhi [India], June 7 (ANI): The 21st edition of the Delhi International Open Grandmasters Chess Tournament was officially inaugurated in the national capital, marking a significant occasion in the Indian chess calendar. Delhi Minister Parvesh Verma praised India's up-and-coming chess players at the event and offered his best wishes to the young players. Minister Verma said at the inauguration, 'The first Grandmaster Delhi Chess Tournament has been inaugurated. I convey my best wishes to all the children. India is very proud of the achievements of all our children, whether it is our Gukesh (Dommaraju) or Vaishali (Rameshbabu).' He further praised the organisers' and the chess fraternity's efforts in nurturing young talent and bringing the game to such a prominent stage. 'Many congratulations to all, and I convey my best wishes to the Federation and the Association for organising such a good tournament here at such a good level,' he added. With a record prize pool of Rs 1.21 crore, the Delhi International Open Grandmasters chess tournament is all set for its 21st edition from June 7 to 14 at Tivoli Gardens, Chattarpur, New Delhi. A marquee calendar event on the FIDE World Championship Circuit, the tournament has played a pivotal role in shaping the rise of India's chess stars, including past winners Arjun Erigaisi and Aravindh Chithambaram, R Praggnanandhaa, and World Champion Gukesh Dommaraju, who earned his final GM norm here to become a Grandmaster. Organised under the aegis of the All India Chess Federation, the Delhi GM Open has grown into the largest classical-format chess tournament in Asia by participation. This year, the Delhi GM Open will host over 2,500 players from over 15 countries, including 20 Grandmasters, competing across three rating-based categories. The prize pool marks a 168 per cent increase from last year's edition. Category A has a Rs 51 lakh prize pool and is open to internationally rated players. All matches will follow FIDE rules and the FIDE Swiss System format, with 10 rounds in every section. Taiwan Athletics Open 2025: Jyothi Yarraji sprints to gold as India enjoy flurry of top spots
New Delhi [India], June 7 (ANI): Reigning Asian champion and Olympian Jyothi Yarraji continued her scorching form this season after she scripted a victory in the women's 100m hurdles as India bagged six gold medals on the opening day of the Taiwan Athletics Open 2025 in Chinese Taipei on Saturday. Jyothi sprinted to gold after clocking 12.99 seconds. Despite a scratchy start that forced her to drop in the second place, she managed to surge ahead in the last 20 metres and secured her spot at the top of the podium with a powerful finish. Jyothi had clocked 13.18s in the heats to earn a spot in the final and was the only athlete in the event to finish with a sub-13 timing in the final, according to Japan's Asuka Terada (13.04s) and Chisato Kiyoyama (13.10s) finished second and third, respectively, behind Jyothi. India's national record in the women's 100m hurdles also belongs to Jyothi. She clocked 12.78s to set the mark at the World University Games two years ago. Tejas Shirse, the national record holder in the men's 110m hurdles, also claimed gold in the event with a season-best time of 13.52s. Chinese Taipei's Yuan-Kai Hsieh and Chen Kuei-ru won silver and bronze with timings of 13.72s and 13.75s, respectively. India extended its dominance and won gold medals in the men's and women's 100m relays. Despite fumbling with the baton exchange, the quartet of Sudheeksha Vadluri, Abinaya Rajarajan, Sneha SS and Nithya Gandhe won the women's 100m relay with a meet record time of 44.07s. Sudheeksha V, who replaced Srabani Nanda, was the only new addition to the Indian women's relay team that won the Asian title last week. Vietnam finished second, and Asia Biomedical, a club, finished third with timings of 44.38s and 44.53s, respectively. The men's 100m relay saw the quartet of Gurindervir Singh, Animesh Kujur, Manikanta Hoblidhar, and Amlan Borgohain win the gold with a timing of 38.75s.
