VAWG: Victim with 'hole in her face' says attacker blamed her
A woman who suffered a broken jaw and teeth after being assaulted by her ex-boyfriend said she was blamed by him for the attack."I went to the mirror. My teeth were hanging on by threads from my gums...I could hardly speak; I could only just use my lips. I said to him, 'Do you realise you have ruined my life?' and he said, 'You can thank yourself'."Eva Komuves was speaking at the launch of a new campaign aimed at ending violence against women and girls (VAWG). The Power to Change campaign aims to address the attitudes of men and boys towards women and girls in Northern Ireland. The campaign is being backed by the PSNI, the Department of Justice (DoJ), and the Stormont executive.

Ms Komuves is a survivor of physical and psychological violence at the hands of her former partner, who has pleaded guilty to a number of charges and will be sentenced in February. She said her abuse didn't start with violence; it began with words."He was criticising my work, my hobbies, my daily routine, and my eating habits. He was controlling my circle of friends. He criticised the way I dressed.""When I raised it as an issue, he said I was attacking him. He made me feel guilty."Eva said her former partner would "raise his voice", and "when he didn't like what I said he started to punch a chair, a wall".
'I had a hole in my face'
She said when she confronted her partner about being on dating sites, he punched her for the first time. "He said he would never hit me again," she said, but added that he would raise his fist to her face during confrontation. "In a text message he said, 'I would never hit you again, but I enjoy watching you flinch.'"She recounted another attack when he punched her and she fell. "I had bruises on my legs and hip. I stood up...I felt I was bleeding...I felt that my mouth was full, that I had a hole in my face.
The campaign has published a series of films and advertising, urging men and boys to reflect on their actions and language to promote a cultural change. One film shows a man harassing a woman in the gym and being challenged by another man.Another depicts two friends discussing online interactions with a girl and sending her unsolicited sexual images.
' I broke the cycle'
Ms Komuves has had numerous treatments and dental surgeries due to the attack in which her jaw and some of her teeth were broken. But she told the audience at the launch of the campaign that when she looks in the mirror now she sees "a strong woman who stood up and broke the cycle". Speaking about the culture of abuse in Northern Ireland, she said "lad culture" is accepted and "it shouldn't be"."It has gone unchallenged for too long. "We assume that boys are educated on how to speak to women and not treat them as objects, but they are not," she added.
Between January 2019 and December 2024, 32 women and girls across Northern Ireland were killed by men.
'Men must reflect on behaviour'
PSNI chief constable Jon Boutcher said there had been a blind spot in how policing dealt with domestic abuse in the past, but the force is now committed to ending VAWG."This is about empowering men and boys, not isolating them."It's time that we men reflected on our own behaviours and attitudes."Boutcher said: "Women are not responsible for preventing harassment or misogyny against them...it's not right."Justice Minister Naomi Long said "much work has been done" by the DoJ to "help make Northern Ireland a safer place for women and girls".She added that we need to change "attitudes that permit and enable unacceptable behaviours". First Minister Michelle O'Neill praised Eva for speaking out and said the campaign is "another important step forward in our collective effort to end violence against women and girls".

The indictment decision came months after Ábrego García was deported in March. Todd Blanche, Donald Trump's former personal lawyer who is now with the Department of Justice, steps in to answer a question about Abrego Garcia's deportation and now return. He explains Abrego Garcia was brought back to the US because there is now an arrest warrant for him. Bondi says that Ábrego García will be prosecuted in the US. If convicted, he will serve his sentence in the US and then be returned to El Salvador. Update: Date: 21:14 BST Title: Bondi alleges he trafficked weapons, drugs into US Content: Bondi goes on to claim that Ábrego García trafficked weapons and narcotics into the US. She adds that a co-conspirator alleges he was involved in the murder of a rival gang member's mother. She does not provide evidence of these claims and he is not facing charges related to that allegation. 'These facts demonstrate Ábrego García is a danger to our community,' she says. Update: Date: 21:12 BST Title: Bondi alleges Ábrego García played 'significant role' in smuggling ring Content: Bondi continues to say that the grand jury found that Ábrego García had played a "significant role" in an alien smuggling ring. Content: Ábrego García, 29, came to the US from El Salvador illegally around 2011. In 2019, he was arrested with three other men in the US state of Maryland and detained by federal immigration authorities. A judge granted him protection from deportation on the grounds that he might be at risk of persecution from gangs in his home country. Ábrego García was living with his wife and child under this protected legal status in Maryland until he was deported on 15 March this year to El Salvador's notorious Cecot prison, in what the Trump administration admitted was an "administrative error". At the same time, the US government alleges he is a "verified" member of the violent El Salvador gang MS-13 - claims that his lawyer denies. Family with young baby left traumatised after racially motivated arson attack on car: ‘We can't live like this'
Police have said they are also reviewing a number of recent incidents in the Rathcoole area to establish whether they are linked. Police also said local patrols in the area following the attack 'will be increased'. The vehicles sustained significant damage during the attack, footage of which was captured on the victim's CCTV camera. Cars damaged in racially motivated arson attacks in Rathcoole Two individuals can be seen approaching the car, before setting it alight and making off down an adjacent street. The victim – a black man – and his partner, who is from the Republic of Ireland, have a young child. "It is ridiculous. It is traumatic. We have an 18-month-old baby and we can't live like this,' he told the Belfast Telegraph. "Both of the cars were burned. I am black and my partner is Irish. This is the fourth time, but I've never seen it like this. This was the biggest attack. "It is embarrassing too. I pay my rent here, nobody has given me this free. I'm not on any benefits or anything. "I don't have any other choice than to be here. I am scared – where am I going to go to?' A PSNI spokesperson said they were investigating a number of reports of criminal damage in the area which they believe to be racially motivated. Chief Inspector Mullan said: 'My officers are investigating two arson incidents which occurred on Thursday evening, June 5. "There have been several other hate crimes in this area in recent weeks and we will be reviewing all of the incidents to try to establish if they are linked. "Enquiries into both incidents, which are being treated as hate crimes, are ongoing, and we are appealing to anyone with any information which might assist us to come forward. "The number to call is 101, quoting reference number 1825 05/06/25. 'These kind of attacks are completely unacceptable, and I want to make it clear that Police will do everything in their power to identify the offenders and bring them before the courts. 'We will be conducting a thorough investigation, and local patrols will be increased in this area as we work to bring this criminality, which has no place in our society, to an end. 'The police cannot prevent and detect this behaviour alone and I would ask for the support of elected representatives, partner agencies, community leaders and local residents to work with us and help us to end these attacks. "These attacks are impacting on families living in the area, some of whom have young families.'
