Storms tear through KELOLAND Monday
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Damaging winds, hail, and heavy rain all made an impact across parts of southeastern KELOLAND yesterday. Meteorologist Brian Karstens shows us the reports.
June is typically a busy month of severe weather in KELOLAND. And it only took 2 days into the new month to find ourselves dealing with the first taste of what will likely be more storms ahead.
Minnesota Ave sees extra 10,000 cars a day
Just after 3 pm, storms started to fire south of Sioux Falls. This is what it looked like from my vantage point just north of Canton.
With 90-degree heat and a strong cold front approaching from the west, the clash of the air masses resulted in a number of severe thunderstorms.
One of the storms near Hospers, Iowa, produced very strong winds, enough to create a trail of debris from a hog barn facility on Highway 60.
Other storms produced a swath of hail, damaging winds, and over 2 inches of rain between Vermillion and Elk Point.
A 3D scan of the storm using our VIPIR system shows large hail in the purple and black colors suspended in the cloud before falling to the ground between 5 pm and 6 pm. The strong heating of the day helped support those strong updrafts needed to produce the hail.
While we may be done with the storms for now, it's June and it won't be long before more severe weather arrives. Fortunately for us, that won't be happening for most of us the rest of this week

Storm Team 3: Back to sizzling heat with strong afternoon storms
Let's have a fabulous Friday! After a 2-week break from 90-degree temperatures, the sizzling heat returns today with highs in the lower 90s. Heat index values will also climb into the upper 90s this afternoon. As of the chance of rain, we can't get rid of it completely due to some lingering moisture from Wednesday's coastal low. The coverage will be lower than the mid-week widespread rain we saw. Only isolated showers and t-storms are possible here and there in the afternoon and evening. Due to the extended threat of severe storms, Sunday has been upgraded to a Weather Aware Day to accompany Saturday's Aware Day. Scattered strong and severe storms are possible across both afternoons and evenings. Not a washout either day, but have a back up indoor plan in case storms head your way. Tomorrow will start dry with muggy temperatures in the lower 70s. Temperatures will quickly jump into the low to mid 90s for highs. Heat index values will be in triple digits. By the early afternoon, scattered storms will begin to fire up. Strong and severe storms are possible through the late afternoon into the overnight hours before rain tapers off. Our main impact will be damaging wind gusts of 60+ mph. Sunday will be a rinse and repeat of Saturday with scattered strong and severe storms possible across the afternoon and evening hours. High temperatures will once again climb into the mid 90s with feel-like temperatures reaching the triple digits. Stay hydrated and keep an eye on the sky. This weekend will not be a washout. There will be plenty of dry slots to be outside, just keep an eye on the sky. Rain will be heavy at times as well – this could lead to localized street flooding. Saturday and Sunday will be two of the hottest days the year so far with highs reaching the mid 90s outside of rain showers. Scattered rain & rumbles to end the work week, some dry time over the weekend
Today: Rain & rumbles, pop-up chance, high 80 Tonight: Tapering showers, low 63 Saturday: Early am showers, cloudier skies, high 79 (63) Sunday: Scattered t-showers, high 78 (64) Monday: Chance t-storms, high 78 (62) Tuesday: Few morning showers, high 77 (60) Good Friday morning! A few of us are waking up to a few showers & storms, but everyone is feeling humid to start the day. Going through Friday, we have a scattered chance to see more wet weather. But, there is a brief end in sight. A stationary front is still draped across Central Ohio and the Midwest. The system stretches all the way to the southwest, so there is more moisture to be funneled along the fronts. Scattered showers & storms remain steady going into the afternoon with more of a pop-up chance lasting into the evening. There is a 1/5 risk for severe weather once again today. Isolated stronger storms could produce stronger wind gusts. We're looking at frequent lightning and heavy rain inside of these storms as well. There are a few areas starting off with flooding concerns this morning. With more wet weather into the end of the week, it should be enough to push the last of the Canadian wildfire smoke out of the area. We'll look at clearer conditions going into the weekend in the way of air quality. Rain chances taper off fairly quickly going into tonight. There are a couple more isolated showers expected south of I-70 for the beginning of tomorrow. The rest of Saturday will work on drier weather, but still remain fairly cloudy. There is not a lot of movement with these fronts over the weekend, so more rain is expected to build back in on Sunday. Scattered showers & storms build up once again on Monday with a final push from this system. After some early showers on Tuesday, skies make a quick recover. The middle of next week will see some more sunshine work in. Skies remain clear & sunny into next Thursday.
