Israeli army accused of using Palestinians as human shields in Gaza

The only times the
Palestinian man wasn't bound or blindfolded, he said, was when he was used by Israeli soldiers as their human shield.

Dressed in army fatigues with a camera fixed to his forehead, Ayman Abu Hamadan was forced into houses in the
Gaza Strip to make sure they were clear of bombs and gunmen, he said. When one unit finished with him, he was passed to the next.
'They beat me and told me: 'You have no other option; do this or we'll kill you,'' the 36-year-old said, describing the two weeks he was held last summer by the
Israeli military in northern Gaza.
Orders often came from the top, and at times nearly every platoon used a Palestinian to clear locations, said an Israeli officer, speaking on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisal.
Several Palestinians and soldiers said that Israeli troops were systematically forcing Palestinians to act as human shields in Gaza, sending them into buildings and tunnels to check for explosives or militants. The dangerous practice had become ubiquitous during 19 months of war, they said.

In response to these allegations, Israel's military says it strictly prohibits using civilians as shields – a practice it has long accused Hamas of using in Gaza.

Bitcoin, other cryptocurrencies sink as Israel escalates Iran stand-off with air strikes

Advertisement The largest digital asset slid as much as 3 per cent on Friday morning in Singapore to dip below US$103,000 before paring losses, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. Second-ranked token ether had at one point shed about 7.6 per cent of its value. The sell-off came after explosions were heard in Tehran, according to local media. Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz said he was declaring a special state of emergency due to Israel's 'pre-emptive strike against Iran'. Israel is anticipating a retaliatory drone and missile attack, Katz said. Advertisement 'Cryptocurrency is reacting negatively to news of Israel strikes in Iran, in line with major risk assets,' said Caroline Mauron, co-founder of Orbit Markets, a provider of liquidity for crypto derivatives. 'We expect to see technical support around US$101,000, but geopolitical news will drive price action from here in the short-term.'

After years of warnings, Israel's Netanyahu makes his move on Iran

Iran once ridiculed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as the boy who cried wolf for his constant public warnings about Tehran's nuclear programme, and his repeated threats to shut it down, one way or another. Advertisement 'You can only fool some of the people so many times,' Iran's then-foreign minister, Mohammad Javad Zarif, said in 2018 after Netanyahu had once again accused Iran of planning to build nuclear weapons. On Friday, after two decades of continually raising the alarm and urging other world leaders to act, Netanyahu finally decided to go it alone , authorising an Israeli air assault aimed, Israel says, at preventing Iran from obtaining weapons of mass destruction. In an address to the nation, Netanyahu, as he has so often before, evoked the horrors of the Nazi Holocaust in World War II to explain his decision. The aftermath of Israeli strikes in Tehran. Israel's attacks risk pushing Iran towards nuclear weapon development

Israel 's attacks against Iran's uranium enrichment facilities and assassinations of several of the regime's leadership figures could pile pressure on Supreme Leader Ali Khamanei to drop his long-standing ideological opposition to Tehran's construction of nuclear weapons. Advertisement To arrive at that seminal moment, Tehran must first decide whether to carefully calibrate its response to the hundreds of Israeli attacks conducted overnight so as to avoid direct military intervention by the United States, according to analysts. Iran did so during its exchange of air attacks with Israel in April and October last year. But Middle East experts said Israel's killing of Tehran's two top military leaders, its top nuclear talks negotiator, and several nuclear programme scientists had shaken the very foundations of the Islamic Republic, leaving it in a strategic bind. Pushed to the wall, the Iranian leadership might conclude that nuclear armament was its only option, although any movement in that direction would have to be conducted as covertly as possible, analysts said. Advertisement 'In the long run, it [the Israeli attack] is more likely to push Iran toward nuclear weapons,' said Kelsey Davenport, director for non-proliferation policy at the Washington-based Arms Control Association. 'Israel cannot destroy Iran's nuclear programme,' she said in a social media post.
