Ravi Shastri says ‘you've got to miss IPL' in order to be prepared if WTC keeps coming in June
Australia thrashed India by 209 runs in the final of the World Test Championship in 2023. The majority of the Indian team that was picked in the squad and played the game were coming on the back of two-and-a-half months of intense IPL T20 cricket, whereas some of the Australians, a few by choice and a few by not getting picked for the IPL at the auction, played the game directly and looked match fit.
'In an ideal scenario, yes, I would prefer it if we have 20-25 days to prepare for a game like this,' Indian skipper at the time Rohit Sharma had said after the loss.
'Let's be realistic here. You're not going to get those 20 days. And if that's the case then you've got to miss IPL. So, the choice is yours, and it's up to the establishment as well. I'm sure the BCCI will review this in the future, if a World Test Championship [final] is going to come after an IPL every time in the month of June, then for that season, if your team qualifies for the final, there should be certain clauses put to franchises,' Shastri said.
The lack of red-ball practice showed in the Indian side compared to the Australian side. The likes of Steve Smith and Travis Head, who were not part of the IPL, scored centuries in the game and looked at home with the rhythms of Test match cricket, and the bowling too were well adept at bowling Test match lengths.
Though some of the batters for India, the likes of Rohit himself, Virat Kohli, and Ajinkya Rahane, did have their moments playing some pristine shots and getting starts, they eventually succumbed to the discipline of the Australian bowlers, playing drives against the deliveries that could have been avoided. The bowling coming on the back of a grueling IPL, where the bowlers are used to bowling just four overs, did show the disability to construct longer spells suited for red-ball cricket.

Pat Cummins took matters into his own hands to set Australia on the way to yet another victory in an ICC tournament under his captaincy. However, on day two of the World Test Championship final, it was his bowling which swung the game and did the talking, as he finished with figures of 6-28 in South Africa's first innings. It was a historic performance by Cummins, and one which took him to 300 career Test wickets. Cummins also became only the fourth captain to take 5 wickets in an innings at Lord's, and by cleaning up the final wicket of the innings, became the only captain to have 6 wickets in a single innings at this legendary ground. Cummins started off on the evening of day one, cleaning up Wiaan Mulder through his gate. He came back on the morning of the second day to remove his opposite number, having Temba Bavuma caught at cover by a diving Marnus Labuschagne. However, it was his post-lunch exploits that truly showed his class. With South Africa having formed some momentum before the break, it all came crashing down. Cummins removed Verreynne and Jansen in the same over, before coming back to dismiss set man David Bedingham to complete his five-fer. Cummins also became the first captain to take a five-fer in an ICC final, as well as the player with most five-fers as a captain in Test cricket. 'At lunch we walked in, they were batting pretty well, so good to get a first innings lead,' Cummins reflected on his performance during the innings break. This was the second best figures in his Test career. Speaking about reaching the 300 mark, Cummins expressed how much it meant to him to reach that mark. Cummins becomes the 40th member of the 300 club, and the eighth Australia. On if he imagined he would reach the mark in one innings, Cummins said: 'It's more than I could have asked for. For any fast bowler 300 is a big number, have battled through niggles injuries to play well on different occasions and gotten through it.' Cummins' effort ensured that Australia capitalised on their remarkable bowling performance on day one evening, bowling out South Africa for 138 and taking a 74-run first innings lead.

Radha Yadav replaces injured Shuchi Upadhyay for India women's tour of England
Radha Yadav has been named as a replacement of injured Shuchi Upadhyay for India women's tour of England. The Board of Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the decision on Thursday (June 12). Shuchi Upadhyay made her ODI debut in May 2025 during the Tri-series against Sri Lanka. She played one match in the series and conceded 59 runs in 54 deliveries, In the game, she bowled at an economy rate of 6.55 and is yet to take her maiden wicket. The 20-year-old left-arm spinner has sustained an injury in her left shin. "Shuchi was ruled out of the tour after sustaining a left shin injury, which was diagnosed during the pre-tour camp at the BCCI Centre of Excellence (COE) in Bengaluru,' BCCI stated in a release. BCCI has announced Radha Yadav as Shuchi's replacement. 'The Women's Selection Committee has named Radha Yadav as a replacement for Shuchi Upadhyay in Team India's squads for the England tour,' the BCCI said. The 25-year-old has played 84 T20Is and taken 97 wickets. In the 7 ODIs she played so far, she has scalped 8 wickets. India is set to play five T20Is against England followed by three ODIs. While the T20I matches will be played from June 28 to July 12, the ODI series is scheduled from July 16 to July 22.
