This Coffee and Espresso System Made Me a Morning Person. Get It for Free Right Now

CNET7 days ago

I consider myself something of a coffee savant. One doesn't have a Lorelai Gilmore-esque need for coffee and drink four to five cups a day without becoming a connoisseur. When I was a college student, I purchased coffee almost daily at the on-campus cafe. Whenever I travel, finding the best coffee house in that city is always my absolute top priority. Needless to say, I've had my fair share of coffee shop experiences -- but now I prefer to drink coffee at home.
The main reason for this change in behavior is thanks to the L'Or Barista coffee and espresso system, which is currently being offered for free when you order $79 worth of coffee capsules. L'Or is also running several Memorial Day promotions on its coffee systems, so take advantage before these deals disappear. Plus, you can grab the L'Or system and frother bundle for $50 off in all colors.
I bought my mom this system for Christmas and we've both become L'Or evangelists. With this deal, it's not a bad time to gift your caffeine-loving mom or dad (or yourself -- I won't judge) my all-time favorite coffee and espresso system. Why I love my L'Or Barista
The Pumpkin Spice capsules are my go-to in the fall, but the iced coffee capsules are my favorite during the blistering summer months.
Macy Meyer/CNET
Every morning, I wake up giddy to make my coffee. The Onyx Espresso capsules are my consistent go-to when I make my favorite salted maple iced lattes, which are perfect for warm, summer mornings, but I'm also a huge fan of the iced coffee capsules. Since I've perfected my morning caffeine routine with the L'Or Barista, I no longer feel any need to buy coffee out. In fact, I prefer making my coffee and espresso drinks at home since I can use my machine to tailor them to my mood on that given morning.
I also love how quickly the machine heats up -- a flat 25 seconds to be exact. Nothing feels worse than waiting and waiting for a coffee machine to turn on, heat up and brew up a batch of java. Mere minutes can feel like an eternity when I'm exhausted and desperate for the energy that first cup of caffeine brings me.
What comes with the system?
The L'Or Barista is a single-serve machine that uses high-pressure brewing to make both coffee and espresso beverages at home. The system can brew six different sizes of hot or iced coffee, as well as espresso.
Of course the sleek machine that's compact enough to fit on the kitchen counter is a highlight, but the capsules are also an exciting treat. Since you'll need to spend $79 or more for a free system, you can opt to taste of a variety of capsule flavors. I've tried the Caramel, Hazelnut and Le Tigre coffee capsules and numerous espresso options -- it's genuinely hard to pick a favorite.
Why this makes a great gift
At its discounted price tag (usually $199), the L'Or Barista would be a great gift for any coffee connoisseur in your life. In fact, my mom tried mine, became obsessed, and would subtly bring it up until I finally bought her one this past Christmas. The current sale would provide the perfect opportunity to get some key Father's Day or graduation shopping done (wink, wink).
Basically, this system comes with everything you need for a complete at home barista experience, while taking any hassle out of the process.

When will this deal expire?
We don't know how long this deal will last, but we do know that it's only available for a limited time and until supplies last, so the offer could expire at any moment. If supplies last, the discount will probably continue a few days after Memorial Day, but there's no guarantee. If you're hoping to snag this coffee system for free, we recommend placing your order sooner rather than later.

I Love This Portable 32-Inch Touchscreen TV and It's on Sale at Amazon Right Now

For a brand I had previously never heard about, Fiteye captivated me with its portable "TV" offering. The premise is similar to LG's StandbyME Rollable Smart Touch Screen but uses Android OS, offers longer battery life, a larger display and costs less with the current $193 discount in both the white and cream white models. You'll find it for $897 right now at Amazon. It's essentially a TV on wheels connected to a 15,000-mAh battery buried somewhere inside the base of its stand. However, I'd be hard-pressed to call this thing a TV; since it's touch screen, it's more like an oversized Android tablet on wheels. Somehow, since it arrived at my doorstep, it has followed me everywhere I go in the house. In fact, it's watching me type at this very moment. Now I can't imagine what life would be like if my giant Android tablet were to leave. It's become everything: a TV, a monitor, a signboard, a companion, a friend… I digress. What exactly is this TV for? A bit of everything, really. So far, I've used it to watch anime with my headphones connected, lounging on the couch while my partner uses the living room TV. I've used it as a monitor for my MacBook while working. I've rolled it up to my minibar and used it to look at cocktail recipes while mixing. I've used it as a recipe book, a kitchen chalkboard, an indoor news signboard, an outdoor TV and the list goes on and on. Dreamchild Obari/CNET It also has a front camera -- not a very powerful one but it could work in a pinch. You can set it up to do video calls with friends and family who don't care too much about video quality. It's also perfect for video calling in a games night, and we've used it as a Scrabble dictionary instead of people using different phones to check words. Hey, did you know? CNET Deals texts are free, easy and save you money. It's not particularly the best at all these things. For instance, there are many dedicated outdoor TVs and projectors with better sound, image quality and insulation but it's perfect at being a jack-of-all-trades, moving around the house to where it's needed the most. It cannot completely replace a tablet, a phone, a monitor or even a TV, though, and I won't recommend it as any one of these. But if you need an average extra screen for any reason or a smart display for your smart home -- this is the way to go. What are the specs? As a tablet, its performance is decent. It has an 8-core unspecified CPU that runs Android 12 OS compatible with many apps in the App Store, 128GB of built-in storage and 6GB of RAM. So far, I haven't noticed any lag in performance or video playback. Dreamchild Obari/CNET The 32-inch display has a surprisingly crisp high-contrast LCD panel, 60Hz refresh rate and 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution. With its ability to rotate and swivel, it's not hard to adjust it to a good viewing angle. It is lacking in the sound department, though. I've taken to pairing it with a portable Bluetooth speaker. Another thing that pleases me about this smart screen is its battery. Fiteye claims you can get up to 7 hours of usage time with it. I've left mine on for up to 48 hours, displaying my curated Flipboard widget at the lowest brightness. However, since the battery isn't integrated into the tablet, tracking battery health using the LED screen on the base's stand is a hassle since the numbers are inaccurate and the LED display tends to shut off when inactive.

This Philips Hue Accessory Is a Game Changer for Light Control

Philips Hue smart lights consistently rank well on CNET's list of the best smart lights out there. As someone who has collected these over the years, I love how efficient they are, but controlling them typically means I need to reach for my smartphone or bark a voice command into a smart speaker, smart display or my smartwatch. While these options are great, having so many ways to control my lights has made my overall smart lighting experience feel like a bit of a mess. Luckily, I found the perfect accessory to control my lights that I can't live without now. I can find other brands of smart lights at much cheaper prices these days, but Philips Hue is perhaps the most well-known smart light brand, and offers a solid lineup of indoor and outdoor smart lighting. Whether I want my lighting tucked away or I'm looking for unique lights that are designed to be shown off, Hue's got them. It's not just about the bulbs. The Hue line also has a large assortment of accessories. To me, the best is the Philips Hue Tap Dial. Available in black or white and priced at $50, the Tap Dial is a small puck-shaped light controller with buttons you can press and a dial you can twist, giving it a "smart analog" vibe. It lets you easily control multiple smart lights at once without having to use voice control. Right now the white version bundled with a smart dimmer is discounted by 7% on Amazon, bringing the price down to $72. It's a very minor discount, yes, but it's rarely ever on sale. Plus, I'd recommend it to anyone with Hue lights, even when it's at full price. For more, don't miss our roundup of the best smart home deals overall. On the surface, the Tap Dial is a simple way to control your lights Spending $50 on a glorified light switch (or $72 on the bundle) may seem like a bit much, especially when you consider that it's nearly the same price as a single Philips Hue 75-watt White and Color Ambiance bulb. If you're like me and firmly steeped in the Hue ecosystem, you've likely already come to terms with the fact that it's an expensive ecosystem to be in. The customization options for this little guy will have tinkerers excited, and I believe it's definitely worth its price. The Dial looks like a hockey puck with four buttons on the face, with a rotating outer wheel to brighten or dim your lights. The four buttons each have little dots numbered 1 to 4, so you can feel which button you're pressing, even in the dark. It's fairly small and not a chore to bring it room to room if you so desire. You can place it on a wall inside of the included wall mount to use like a typical light switch. It's magnetic, so you can stick it on your fridge or some other metal surface. The customization options for the Tap Dial are extensive. Blake Stimac/CNET Under the hood, the Tap Dial is a dream for tinkerers You'd think that setup for this little device would be simple, with only a few options involved, but you'd be wrong. The settings for the Tap Dial can be a bit complex and can require some tinkering to get just right, especially if you have multiple scenes you want to go through. Either I completely missed the function in the app, or within the nearly two years I've had the dial, Philips resolved my main gripe. I'm not sure which is true, but my biggest annoyance was that I believed you could only use the Tap Dial for one room or "zone" in your home. While this may have always been how the device functioned, this has now been resolved (in my mind) and you can assign each button to a different room or zone. The twist-to-dim function can only be assigned to one room at a time, which makes sense. To set up, you'll head to the Hue app, then go to Settings > Accessories and select your Tap Dial. From there, you can assign functions to each of the buttons. First, you'll need to choose whether the button is going to control your lights or automation. If you choose the former, you'll need to choose the button behavior when you press it: Time-based light : Lighting based on the time of day or based on a customized timetable of your choosing. : Lighting based on the time of day or based on a customized timetable of your choosing. Scene cycle : Choose a primary scene that will always start upon a button press. Continue pressing to cycle through additional light scenes. : Choose a primary scene that will always start upon a button press. Continue pressing to cycle through additional light scenes. Single scene : Always only the same scene on button press. : Always only the same scene on button press. Lights off: Selected lights turn off when the button is pressed. By default, pressing and holding any of the buttons will turn off the lights assigned to it, but you can opt for turning all the lights off in your entire home or for it to do nothing. There's also an advanced "smart on/off" option, which I haven't dabbled with yet. After you've customized the buttons to your liking, your last stop is to choose what the twist dial does, or what else it does, other than brightening or dimming your lights. There are only two options here, and both are easy to tweak. The first is choosing if you want to be able to turn your lights off completely with the dial or have them go down to the minimum brightness only as you twist to dim them. The second gives you the option to set a specific scene that will turn on if you twist the dial when the lights are off. You can make your setup as simple or complex as you'd like, making the Tap Dial approachable for anyone. The Hue Tap Dial makes a great gift There's a good chance that someone isn't going to run out and drop a bunch of money on Hue lights after receiving this as a gift. The Tap Dial is easy to use, but the value it brings comes with the customization you can do with it. Still, you don't have to want to jump into all the settings to make the Dial worth it. As I said above, it's an approachable device for anyone since you can make it as simple or as complex as you'd like. Hey, did you know? CNET Deals texts are free, easy and save you money. If you know someone who already has a Hue setup in their home, this would be a great addition. Plus, if they love to dig into the settings or are self-described tinkerers, then this is definitely something worth considering. If you aren't sure if someone has Hue lights, then the Tap Dial would be an even better gift when paired with a new bulb.
