Madurai:
Madras high court
has directed the conclusion of disciplinary proceedings against the teacher of an aided school in Madurai district who slapped a student using a slipper, and subsequently tendered his apology to the student and his parents.
The court also considered his request favourably for migration to another school.
The court was hearing the petition filed by K Ramesh, who was working as a PG assistant (English) teacher in a govt-aided school in Madurai district. In June 2024, while the petitioner was taking class for the Class XII students, a student repeatedly interrupted the class. On sudden provocation, the petitioner slapped him with a slipper.
Based on a complaint lodged by the parents of the student, disciplinary proceedings were initiated against the petitioner, and he was placed under suspension.
The petitioner submitted an application for voluntary retirement; however, he subsequently withdrew it and opted for migrating to another aided school. However, his request for migration was rejected by the school management. Hence, the petitioner filed the present petition challenging the suspension order and seeking permission to migrate to another school.

Ramesh's counsel submitted that the petitioner apologised immediately to the student and his parents. The parents also withdrew the complaint. Considering the happenings, it would be awkward for the petitioner to continue in the same school, which is why he opted for migration to another school.
Justice B Pugalendhi observed that the teacher also submitted a representation seeking migration to another school and enclosed various medals, certificates, and letters of appreciation received from competent authorities over his 22 years of service.
The petitioner's service record prior to this incident was unblemished and marked by competent and dedicated performance.
"While the act of physical misconduct is unacceptable, the court is of the opinion that a lenient and balanced view is warranted in light of his otherwise clean and commendable service record; his willingness to take responsibility for the incident; and the fact that he himself requested to be transferred," the judge observed.
Hence, the judge directed that the disciplinary proceedings initiated against the petitioner shall be formally concluded based on available records and submissions. Subject to the availability of a willing recipient school and the formal closure of proceedings without the imposition of a major penalty, the request for migration may be favourably considered.
Such migration, although sought by the petitioner, shall be deemed adequate to address the institutional concerns and is considered a sufficient administrative measure under the circumstances. Until such time, the existing order of suspension shall remain in force. Such exercise shall be concluded as expeditiously as possible, preferably within four weeks, since the next academic year is about to commence, the judge directed.

'Somebody's paying them': Donald Trump says Los Angeles protests are being funded; watch video

LA protesters are 'Paid insurrectionists', says Donald Trump US President Donald Trump on Tuesday made a bold claim that the violent demonstrations in Los Angeles are being funded. Speaking to reporters from the Oval Office on Tuesday, Trump said, "Somebody's financing it. We're going to find out through [Attorney General] Pam Bondi and the Department of Justice who it is. " The president described the unrest in Los Angeles as a "full-blown assault on peace, on public order and on national sovereignty," and said those involved were not ordinary citizens but "paid insurrectionists." "These are paid troublemakers. They're agitators. They're paid," Trump repeated. Trump claimed that something so large in scale and resource-heavy during the protests must have been planned. "Do you think somebody walks up to a kerb and starts hammering pieces out, has all the equipment necessary and starts handing it out to people to use as a weapon?" the MAGA chief said. This statement followed Trump's decision to deploy 2,000 National Guard troops and 700 US Marines to the streets of Los Angeles after days of violent protests sparked by federal immigration raids. The president said the military deployment was necessary to protect federal assets, while critics, including California Governor Gavin Newsom and accused him of escalating tensions. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo "It's common sense... when there's no danger they'll leave. You would have had a horrible situation unless I sent them," Trump said. "You'd be reporting on a lot of death and a lot of destruction." However, California officials say the federal response has worsened the situation. Mayor Karen Bass declared a state of emergency and imposed a curfew in downtown LA, citing looting of 23 businesses and widespread property damage. Newsom, who has taken legal action to block the deployment, said, "Trump is turning the US military against American citizens. The courts must immediately block these illegal actions." A separate controversy erupted when Trump claimed to have spoken with Newsom to tell him to "do a better job". The governor denied any such conversation took place, saying, "There was no call. Not even a voicemail." Trump later accused Newsom of lying and showed Fox News a call log indicating a 16-minute call took place on June 7, not June 9 as he had earlier claimed, reports the Telegraph. Meanwhile, journalists covering the protests have reported being tear-gassed, shot with rubber bullets, or briefly detained. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese condemned the treatment of reporter Lauren Tomasi, calling her experience "horrific." Trump is reportedly using the protests to promote his immigration bill in Congress, with aides describing the moment as a political opportunity to rally support.

Thane tragedy: ‘CCTV cameras' view blocked by trains, those injured too can't tell how they fell'

MUMBAI: Central Railway on Tuesday set up a five-member committee of senior officials to investigate the sequence of events leading to the Mumbra tragedy. The probe panel includes the senior divisional security commissioner, senior divisional mechanical engineer, senior divisional electrical engineer, senior divisional engineer, and the senior divisional operations manager. CR's chief public relations officer Swapnil Nila said, "There is no fixed deadline, but the committee has been asked to submit its findings at the earliest." A senior RPF official said, "We have reviewed CCTV footage from the platform, but it doesn't offer much insight as the view was blocked by the trains themselves." Adding to the mystery, officials said even the injured commuters have been unable to provide clear accounts of how they fell. "There is talk of passengers being flung and colliding with the opposite train, but nothing is confirmed yet," an official said. The incident occurred at the Diva end near Mumbra railway station. Preliminary observations suggest the incident occurred when two fast locals-a Kasara-CSMT train and a CSMT-Karjat one-crossed each other ahead of the curve. It is suspected that shoulder bags or luggage brushing against passengers could have destabilised those on the edge. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Deze plug-in SUV is écht compleet. Of the 13 commuters involved in the mishap, 11 were aboard the Kasara-CSMT fast local, while two were on the CSMT-Karjat train. Of the deceased, Vicky Mukhyadal and Mayur Shah were in the CSMT-Karjat train, while Ketan Saroj and Rahul Gupta were travelling on the Kasara-CSMT local. An official said scratch marks were found on the exterior of the Kasara-CSMT train's last coach. "It appears that a passenger's bag may have grazed the coach of the opposite train, which may have triggered the incident," the official said. Meanwhile, the local staff from Mumbra railway station who attended to the mishap victims are likely to be called in for questioning. The railway police, guided by the assistant commissioner of police, railways, CSMT, on Tuesday inspected the spot where the victims were found following the mishap to look for clues. -Inputs by Manoj Badgeri
