Masked gang slash man outside Edinburgh home as feud escalates

BBC News23-05-2025

A targeted attack on a man by a masked gang in Edinburgh is linked to an organised crime feud which has been escalating since March.Four or five men emerged from a grey Land Rover Discovery and slashed the 54-year-old victim on Pitcairn Grove, at about 21:20 on Thursday. It is the third incident at the property in recent weeks after the front door was deliberately set on fire last month and two vehicles were torched outside the home on 8 May.Police are treating the latest attack as attempted murder and confirmed it is linked to a series of assaults, shootings and firebombings across Glasgow and Edinburgh.
The 54-year-old was taken was taken to hospital and remains there but police have not provided any details about his condition.BBC Scotland News understands a bladed weapon was involved in the attack and newspaper reports have suggested it was a machete.
Officers have established that the Land Rover travelled east along the M8, possibly at speed or "erratically".Any drivers who were on the motorway around the time of the attack have been urged to contact the force's non-emergency line.Police said the suspects were all wearing balaclavas and dressed in dark clothing.Det Supt Paul Grainger said: "This has been a targeted attack and we are continuing our inquiries to identify those responsible."I would appeal to any motorists with dash cams to check their footage as the images could be significant to our investigation."Anyone with information can also contact Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.

Actress Chloe Pirrie portrayed Merrit Lingard in the new Netflix hit which sees cranky detective Carl Morck, played by Matthew Goode (pictured), attempt to solve Edinburgh 's cold cases from a shabby office It covers chilling cases including the murder of Margaret Fleming who was callously killed by her 'carers' Edward Cairney and Avril Jones in Inverclyde, Scotland, some time between December 1999 and January 2000. The documentary also covers the case of schoolgirl Caroline Glachan whose body was found in a river in 1996. According to The Scottish Sun, Chloe said: 'I did a lot of research around the legal world in Edinburgh. 'The court system there has been televised quite a lot through the BBC documentary series Murder Trial so I could see how it works, and how it feels like a bit of a club. 'Merritt would absolutely exist outside of something like that, and actually be in conflict with it. 'That immediately told me she would be someone who is potentially not well liked – but that she probably doesn't give a s**t that that's the case.' Based on Jussi Adler-Olsen's bestselling book series titled Department Q, the nine-part programme also features Guilt star Jamie Sives. The new series has proved to be a hit with fans, climbing the charts and racking up an impressive score on Rotten Tomatoes, with an 81% rating. He said Ms Kelly is receiving ongoing treatment for her injuries and a report on those injuries has been obtained. However, he asked the court to put the sentencing back to a date in October to allow time for an updated report which he said would hopefully provide a clearer picture on the progress of her recovery. Horrific moment mum drags two cops down road after speeding off during traffic stop – as she's jailed

THIS is the horrific moment a mum dragged two cops down a road after speeding off during a traffic stop. Lauren Baird, 43, had been pulled over by police, who noticed her car was not insured. 4 But in a "moment of panic", the mum-of-two sped off as the officers were still clinging to the vehicle. Footage showed the cops being dragged along the road in Aviemore, Scotland, before one manages to detach themself. But a female officer was only able to let go several yards up the street and was left needing crutches. Baird sobbed as she was jailed for 18 months today after admitting culpable and reckless conduct to the danger of life. She also pleaded guilty to attempting to pervert the course of justice by giving false details and attempting to conceal her vehicle and driving without a licence or insurance. Sentencing, Sheriff Sara Matheson said: "This was appalling behaviour. "It put two officers' lives in danger. It was pure luck their injuries weren't a lot worse. But it has had a significant psychological effect on them." Inverness Sheriff Court was told Baird had been driving through Aviemore on July 10, 2023, when she was stopped by police. A computer check had revealed her car had no insurance but Baird gave a false name and details to the officers. After she was challenged, the mum sped off - with both cops narrowly avoiding being dragged under her wheels. Police were able to track her down to the hotel where she was staying and found the car concealed in a forest nearby. Both officers were taken to hospital with multiple injuries - including grazing and bruising. The female officer has still not been able to return to work following the horror. Natalie Paterson, representing Baird, told the court she had panicked and not foreseen the "terrible consequences" of her actions, which she fully regretted. As well as a jail term, Baird was disqualified from driving for 43 months. Supt Andrew Barclay, from Police Scotland, said: "Whilst neither officer sustained serious physical injury her behaviour was very dangerous and has had a significant affect on those officers involved. "A police officer's job, by its very nature, often means they can find themselves dealing with volatile and dangerous situations to protect the communities we serve. "It is totally unacceptable for officers to be put in harms way or injured by the irresponsible actions of others." 4 4
