PDEA: Sam Gor syndicate behind P7B worth of shabu found in PH waters
"Sam Gor is a five-drug triad alliance namely: the 14K, Bamboo Union, Big Circle Gang, Sun Yeen On, and Wo Shing Wo, whose leaders are based in Hong Kong and Taiwan,' PDEA director general Undersecretary Isagani Nerez said in a statement.
'Their members simply called it 'The Company,'' he added.
As of Monday, the PDEA said 56 local fishermen have surrendered a total of 1,038 kilos of suspected shabu worth P7,058,400,000 in 40 turnover incidents to authorities.
This is one of the country's largest maritime seizures of illegal drugs in recent years, according to the PDEA.
The sacks of shabu were found in the coastal areas of Dacap Sur, Bani; Boboy and Macaboboni, Agno; and Luciente I, Balingasay, Concordia and Poblacion, Bolinao—all located in the province of Pangasinan
Some were found in Barangay Mantanas and Dili in Sta Cruz, Ilocos Sur. Floating shabu was also found off the waters of Masinloc, Zambales.
'Based on the packaging of shabu packs recovered in Philippine shores, they were contained in teabags with Chinese markings - a signature trademark associated with Sam Gor,' Nerez said.
"Sam Gor gained notoriety by engaging in all sorts of unconventional methods of drug smuggling, including the use of the high seas. They dump their illicit goods to be retrieved later by contact local cohorts. It's a good thing that our hero fishermen got there first before the drugs fell into the wrong hands,' he added.
Citing reports, the PDEA said Sam Gor operates in various countries across the Asia-Pacific Region, including the Philippines.
'It is largely involved in trafficking methamphetamine, and is believed to have an estimated 40 to 70 percent control of the drug market in the region, raking up profits up to more than $17 billion in revenue a year,' the PDEA said.
'Aside from shabu, the syndicate also funnels big proportions of heroin, ketamine, other synthetic drugs and precursor chemicals,' it added.
The PDEA said Sam Gor is named after the nickname of its suspected founder/leader, 'Tse Chi Lop', a Chinese-Canadian who was arrested four years ago in the Netherlands. He was eventually extradited to Australia in December 2022 to face drug trafficking charges.
According to the PDEA, he is considered Asia's 'El Chapo', a reference to Joaquin Guzman, a former Mexican drug lord who became one of the world's most powerful traffickers of narcotics. —RF, GMA Integrated News

Suspected underwater drone recovered off Pangasinan waters
An alleged underwater drone has been recovered by local fishermen off Bolinao, Pangasinan waters, according to the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) on Friday. In a statement, PCG spokesperson for West Philippine Sea Commodore Jay Tarriela said the suspected underwater drone was obtained 149 nautical miles northwest off Bolinao on Wednesday. 'On August 6, 2025, while engaged in fishing approximately 149 nautical miles northwest off Bolinao, Pangasinan, the fishermen observed a floating orange object believed to be an underwater drone,' Tarriela said. He said the fishermen, upon returning to port, reported the sighting of the object to the Coast Guard Substation Infanta and submitted a notarized affidavit detailing their discovery. The suspected underwater drone measures around 160 centimeters in length and 20 inches in width and weighs around 100 kilograms, according to Tarriela. As of May, at least six underwater drones have been found in Philippine waters. Philippine Navy spokesperson for the West Philippine Sea Rear Admiral Roy Vincent Trinidad earlier said that China possibly deployed some of the recovered submersible drones. 'There is a 55 to 80% likelihood that these were deployed by the Chinese Communist Party,' he said. According to Trinidad, the Philippine Navy has the results for the submersible drones found in Ilocos Norte, Calayan Island, and Misamis Oriental. Many components of these items were made in China. National Security Council (NSC) spokesperson Jonathan Malaya called the development 'alarming,' as the underwater drones were used for intelligence purposes. 'These are alarming because, as mentioned by [National Maritime Council spokesperson Undersecretary Alexander Lopez], these are used for intelligence purposes,' Malaya said. 'So this really shows the extent of the operations in the Philippines. We have arrested several, more than 10 agents, Chinese agents in the Philippines, doing different types of espionage activities. Robber on motorbike nabbed after motorist gives chase
Two robbers on a motorcycle thought they would get away with stealing money from a pedestrian, until a motorist who saw the crime chased them down in Caloocan City. According to Marisol Abdurahman's exclusive report in '24 Oras' on Thursday, CCTV footage of a portion of McArthur Highway in Caloocan City showed a man standing on the side of the road and a man on a motorcycle nearby, both wearing helmets, seemingly waiting for someone. When a man tried to walk past them, they moved in, pointing a gun at him and taking what turned out to be P152,000 in cash the victim was going to deposit in a bank for his company. They then got on the motorcycle and fled. What the robbers were not expecting was a car that had paused on the road while the incident was going down. When the riders fled, the motorist gave chase. 'Hinabol niya po yung riding-in-tandem hanggang sa naabutan niya at ito'y binangga niya,' said Caloocan Police Investigation Section chief Rommel Caburog. (The driver chased the riders, caught up to them, and hit them with the car.) The suspects fell off their motorcycle. Nearby police arrested one of them, while the other was able to escape. The money was recovered. The Caloocan Police believe the thwarted robbery was an inside job, and that a co-worker of the victim could be involved. 'Sa tingin po namin may tipster po sa loob, nagsasabi na 'O, palabas na si…, magde-deposit na 'yan, abangan n'yo na 'yan,' said Caburog. (We think there's a tipster inside who's saying, 'Oh, he is coming out, he is about to make a deposit, keep an eye out for him.) NBI nabs man for illegal recruitment, sexual harassment in Cavite
Authorities arrested a 44-year-old alleged illegal recruiter in Naic, Cavite who is also accused of sexually harassing applicants he promised jobs abroad. According to John Consulta's exclusive report on '24 Oras' on Thursday, the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) caught the suspect in a room with a person he was about to victimize. Upon arriving at the NBI office in Cavite, one of the suspect's victims punched him. The NBI said the suspect was recruited mechanics and massage therapists online and charged them a P20,000 placement fee. He also required his victims to have a one-on-one session with him. The suspect also promised the victims a P90,000 monthly salary, and once they believed him, he would engage in the alleged sexual harassment. According to the NBI, the victims came from different areas in the country such as Aklan, Cagayan, Isabela, Bicol and Cavite. 'Sila'y pinangakuan ng trabaho sa Japan. Under the pretext of conducting training activity, minomolestiya niya ng sexual at marami sa kanila ang nagreklamo na maliban sa illegal recruitment,' Atty Eric Nuqui, NBI Cavite District North chief. (They were promised jobs in Japan.
