In the aftermath of the Pahalgam attack, India informed several world capitals—including the United States—that its punitive actions against terror camps based in Pakistan should leave no room for doubt, government sources told PTI on Sunday.
Following the launch of Operation Sindoor on May 7, India also conveyed that any future military provocation from Pakistan would be met with a stronger and more decisive response, the sources added.
1. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, ''Inko mitti mein mila do'; Markaz has been ground to dust, others are next in line,' say sources referring to terror groups, sources told PTI referring to terror groups. "Wahan se goli chalegi, toh yahan se gola chalega (If they fire bullets, we will respond with cannons)," one of the sources quoted PM Modi as saying following the Pakistani actions, PTI reported.
2. Meanwhile, The Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) of India and Pakistan are set to hold discussions today, following last week's ceasefire agreement between the two nuclear-armed countries amid escalating tensions. Earlier on Sunday, India disclosed the names of Pakistani officials who attended the funeral of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorist Abdul Rauf, who was killed during Operation Sindoor. According to the Ministry of Defence, the funeral took place in Muridke, Pakistan. Abdul Rauf, a designated Global Terrorist by the U.S. Treasury, was a senior LeT commander.
3. Senior leadership of the Pakistan Army, along with the Inspector General of Police for Pakistan's Punjab province, were seen attending the funeral and offering prayers for slain LeT commander Abdul Rauf. Those present included Lt Gen Fayyaz Hussain, Major General Rao Imran, Brigadier Mohammad Furqan from the Administration Wing, Punjab legislator Usman Anwar, and Malik Sohaib Ahmed.
4. Border Security Forces Constable Deepak Chingakham succumbed to injuries sustained in cross-border firing by the Pakistan Rangers in RS Pura, Jammu division, during the intervening night of May 9 and 10. DG BSF and All Ranks paid condolences to Deepak Chingakham. "DG BSF and All Ranks salute the supreme sacrifice made by Constable Deepak Chingakham in the line of duty. He was injured in cross border fire by Pakistan on 10th May 2025 along the International Boundary in the R S Pura area, Jammu. He succumbed to his injuries today, on 11th May 2025," BSF said in a post on X.
5. A top IAF officer on Sunday said whatever methods and means the Indian armed forces chose during Operation Sindoor had the "desired effect" on enemy targets, the objective of "decimating terror camps" was achieved and "all our pilots are back home". "We carefully selected the targets and out of the nine selected targets, the target systems that were given to the IAF were the notorious training camps at Bahawalpur and Muridke," he said.
6. Michael Kugelman, US-based Foreign Policy author and expert Specialising in South Asia, while talking about the India-Pakistan tensions, said that the developments were quick, and the ceasefire was sudden and remarkable. Kugelman, while speaking to ANI, said that the tensions between India and Pakistan were at its lowest in decades, and the ceasefire has de-escalated things, ANI reported. "Well, it's been quite a week, given how we saw such a major escalation in tensions so quickly over the last few days and then for there to be this very sudden ceasefire that appeared to come out of nowhere. It really is quite remarkable. I think that the India, Pakistan relations were at one of their lowest points in a number of decades, and they were closer to going to war than at any time since the cargo crisis," he said.
7. PTI reported citinggovernment sources said on Sunday that Pakistan sought a halt to hostilities and "sued for peace" after realizing India was serious—especially following the destruction of eight of its air bases. There was no need for a third-party intervention and, in fact, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio called External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar to convey that the Pakistanis got the message after being hammered by Indian missiles, they said.
8. Former Jammu and Kashmir (J-K) Director General of Police (DGP) SP Vaid on Sunday said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given a "free hand" to the armed forces to retaliate against Pakistan's shelling and other misadventures.
9. "Operation Sindoor was started to fight against terrorism. The operation will be continued and we will hit wherever they (terrorists) hide...Operation Sindoor is on and this is a powerful message...A free hand has been given by PM Modi to the armed forces and to retaliate with full force," former DGP Vaid told ANI.
'Inko mitti mein mila do'; Markaz has been ground to dust, others are next in line.
10. The DGMO warned that India has exercised immense restraint while focusing only on non-escalatory actions. Any threat to the country's sovereignty would be met with decisive force,ANI reported.

Sharmista arrest case: Need to differentiate between hate speech and patriotism, say Kolkata Police

Amid growing sympathy for arrested influencer Sharmista Panoli, the Kolkata Police on Sunday presented its patriotic credentials while countering 'misleading narrative' surrounding their action and her objectionable social media content. In a post on social media platform X, the Kolkata Police justified their action of apprehending the 22-year-old law student, claiming they acted lawfully according to the procedure established by law. 'Hate speech and abusive language should not be misconstrued as freedom of speech and expression as enshrined in Article 19(1)(a) of the Constitution,' said the police. 'The accused was not arrested for expressing patriotism or for personal belief; legal actions were taken for sharing offensive content which promotes hatred among the communities,' the police said. 'Some social media accounts are spreading false information that Kolkata Police has unlawfully arrested a law student for opposing Pakistan. This narrative is mischievous and misleading,' said the post. It said that the Kolkata Police took pains to differentiate between expressing national pride and hate speech targeting any religious figure or community or any class of citizens. The police said: 'Expressing national pride and patriotism is a thing that every citizen and organisation stands for. Kolkata Police being no different, stands firmly with the citizens of India.' 'At the time when the whole country stood united and our brave citizens were fighting at the frontier, posting such content on social media which is insulting and demeaning to any class of citizens of India is most abominable act. Any such act will only benefit our enemies,' said the Kolkata Police. The post said the law student from Gurugram was arrested on the basis of allegations that she posted a video which was insulting to the religious belief of a class of citizen of India and amounted to promoting disharmony and hatred between different communities. The police said that hate speech targeting any religious figure or community or any class of citizens of India which has potential to incites disharmony and hatred between different communities is a punishable offence in the newly implemented Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita. The clarification from Kolkata Police came on a day when celebrities like Bollywood star Kangna Ranaut said the arrest over a now-deleted social media post was 'unjustified' and amounted to North Korea-type dictatorship. Targeting the Trinamool government in West Bengal, the National Award-winning actress and BJP MP from Mandi in Himachal Pradesh, said: 'I request the government of West Bengal to not make the state another North Korea.' Actor-cum-politician and Andhra Pradesh's Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan also showed solidarity with Sharmistha and asked the police to act justly. Sharmistha was arrested on Saturday from Gurugram in Haryana by Kolkata Police for posting videos containing communal remarks during Operation Sindoor. She was later sent to 14-day judicial custody.

Trump's Aide In Constant Contact With India To Finalise Trade Deal: ‘Calling Every Day'

Last Updated: His remark came at the time when the US president has been constantly mentioning trade pressure while claiming credit for the ceasefire between India and Pakistan. US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer has said that Washington is in constant touch with New Delhi over trade deal discussions, adding that he has been speaking with India's top trade official nearly every day. Speaking to CNBC, he also revealed that negotiations with Malaysia and Vietnam are also in line, which he plans to take forward during the upcoming Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) meeting next week. According to the top American trade negotiator, Washington may finalise tariff deals with many major countries in the coming weeks. His remark came a day after US President Donald Trump cited trade pressure and claimed credit for being able to stop 'potentially a nuclear war" between India and Pakistan. Trump has claimed several times in the last few weeks that he told India and Pakistan that the US will stop trade with the two nations if they don't stop the conflict. However, India has always refuted all such claims, saying the issue of trade did not come up at all in talks between Indian and American leaders during its military clashes with Pakistan. Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal recently met US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick in Washington to discuss the proposed bilateral trade agreement currently under negotiation between the two countries. On April 2, the US had imposed an additional 26 per cent reciprocal tariff on Indian goods. However, the additional tariff has remained suspended for 90 days. From Assam to Haryana, arbitrary arrests of social media users make a mockery of the Constitution

It has been just over three weeks since the Indian Army launched Operation Sindoor as a response to the terror attack in Pahalgam that left 26 people dead. Since then, the military action has been used as a cover to crack down on social media users across the spectrum. In Assam, 81 'anti-nationals' have been arrested for 'sympathising' with Pakistan, the chief minister said on Sunday. Arrests in the wake of the military action have also been reported from Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Meghalaya, Tripura, Haryana and Maharashtra, though an exact number is not known. The case that garnered the most attention was the arrest on May 18 of Ashoka University professor Ali Khan Mahmudabad. In a Facebook post, he pointed to the irony of Hindutva commentators praising Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, who had represented the Army during media briefings, even as they ignored the mob lynchings, arbitrary bulldozing of homes and other hate crimes against Indian Muslims. When the Supreme Court granted Mahmudabad interim bail on May 21, Justice Surya Kant declared that the professor should have used ' neutral language ' rather than using words with 'dual meaning'. On Friday, the Kolkata police travelled to Gurugram to arrest 22-year-old Sharmishtha Panoli, an Instagram influencer and law student, for a video posted on social media that allegedly hurt religious sentiments. In the video, which Panoli deleted after a backlash online, she questioned the 'silence' of Bollywood celebrities on the military operation and also made remarks about Islam. Bharatiya Janata Party MP, actress Kangana Ranaut, called for Panoli to be released immediately, despite the 'unpleasant words' she used in her video. The language used in the video was distasteful and far from being 'neutral' – but that should not matter. In these actions, it has become clear that there is a heavy price to pay for contrariness of any kind in India. In this climate, one would think politically 'neutral' individuals would be safe from public criticism. But earlier this month, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri was attacked on social media for simply doing his job, after he announced at a media briefing that a ceasefire had been reached with Pakistan. Even his daughter was dragged into the controversy as trolls blamed him for the decision rather than the political establishment that made it. In the battle between political and ideological agendas, a disquieting silence is being forced on the famously argumentative Indian. Arrests of this sort make a mockery of the right to freedom of speech and expression enshrined in the Indian Constitution.
