German FA investigates third-tier club Bielefeld over 'grey zone' injury
BERLIN, April 16 (Reuters) - The German Football Association (DFB) on Wednesday launched an investigation into an alleged injury to German Cup finalists and third-tier club Arminia Bielefeld goalkeeper Jonas Kersken during last week's 2-0 league win at Viktoria Cologne.
Kersken went down without any involvement in the 69th minute on Sunday and received treatment, with Arminia coach Mitch Kniat taking the opportunity to talk to his players.
Viktoria Cologne coach Olaf Janssen, who was sent off for protesting Kersken's injury, said after the game the keeper was not injured and did it so that Kniat could confer with his players, calling the move 'unsportsmanlike'.
Kniat, whose team face VfB Stuttgart in the German Cup final on May 24, told a press conference the keeper's actions fell in a "grey zone" of regulations and he said he was just taking advantage of that.
"I have learned two words from referees all these years that I am a coach. Grey zones... so we can use the grey zones for us as well," Kniat said.
The DFB, however, has now contacted the coach, demanding clarifications on the matter, a DFB spokesperson told German media.
According to the rules, a keeper is treated for an injury on the pitch, in contrast to outfield players who must be treated on the sidelines so that play can continue.

Thomas Tuchel needs to solve Harry Kane problem Gareth Southgate never managed
England face Andorra on Friday night in World Cup qualifying. The Three Lions should score plenty, but goals may still be an issue for Thomas Tuchel Famously, back in late 2017, Pep Guardiola referred to Tottenham Hotspur as the ' Harry Kane team'. And to many, there is still a 'Harry Kane team' - only it is not Spurs, obviously. It is England. Kane has 105 caps and 71 goals and loves a landmark. Make no mistake, he has Peter Shilton's record number of 125 caps AND a century of international goals in his sights. Assuming he stays fit - fingers crossed - Kane will get plenty more caps and goals under Thomas Tuchel. After all, in the season they worked together at Bayern Munich, Kane scored 44 in 45 games for Tuchel. And considering the German coach will be gone in just over a year's time, Tuchel has no compulsion to find a long-term successor to Kane. But if he is worth his £5million annual salary, what Tuchel does have is an obligation to identify a system and players that can be threatening and prolific in Kane's absence. Below Kane's record-breaking number, individual goal tallies of current squad members hardly leap from the page. For example, Bukayo Saka has 12 goals from 43 appearances, Jude Bellingham has six from 42, Declan Rice five from 64, Ollie Watkins five from 18, Anthony Gordon one from ten, Cole Palmer two from 11, Ivan Toney one from six, Eberechi Eze one from 10, Trent Alexander-Arnold four from 33. The absent Marcus Rashford has 17 from 62. Recent England teams have had very few scoring issues in qualifying campaigns but despite reaching the final of Euro 2024, they were not an overly impressive attacking force in Germany, scoring only eight times in seven matches, Kane being responsible for three of those (one of which was from the penalty spot). And during that arduous slog to the defeat to Spain in Berlin, it was clear that, with Kane not operating at full power, Gareth Southgate needed an alternative system. And despite his limited preparation time, that is what Tuchel will surely be considering in the build-up to World Cup 2026. Perhaps Tuchel will have a look back at Lee Carsley's penultimate game as interim England manager, a 3-0 win in Greece in which Kane started on the bench. The attacking three starting that match - Anthony Gordon, Ollie Watkins and Noni Madueke - are all in the squad for Saturday's qualifier against Andorra in Barcelona and Tuesday's friendly against Senegal at the City Ground. Assisted by Madueke, Watkins scored an early opener and missed a good chance after sprinting onto a pass behind the Greek defence - a manoeuvre we seldom see from Kane. Carsley's selection and game-plan in that match in Athens showed that this England team does not have to be one-dimensional. While the numbers are not fantastic, there IS goal threat from a lot of areas. Let's be honest here. Kane does not turn 32 until the end of next month and - again, assuming he is fighting fit - will spearhead England's World Cup challenge next summer. No doubt about it. And so he should. He will probably lead the Three Lions into Euro 2028. But, in an attacking sense, it is incumbent on Tuchel to find the best possible Plan B .. and C, and D. And if he is half the coach the Football Association seems to think he is, he will do just that.

Diaz holds worrying talks with rivals as Liverpool issued Wirtz warning
Liverpool continue to push for Florian Wirtz after several bids were turned down by Bayer Leverkusen but Luis Diaz's exit talk continues to swirl around Anfield Liverpool are on course for a mammoth summer of transfer dealings - both when it comes to ins and outs at Anfield. Already we've seen Jeremie Frimpong arrive, filling the void left by Trent Alexander-Arnold. Now all the talk is of a potential British-record transfer that could see Florian Wirtz make his way to Anfield as Arne Slot looks to build on his Premier League success. Bayer Leverkusen have turned down several bids so far as they hold out for their asking price. Slot is also looking to bolster his defensive line and could add even more firepower to compliment the likes of Mohamed Salah. When it comes to exits some big names could leave Anfield with Darwin Nunez among them. Luis Diaz's future also continues to be a subject of discussion with the Colombian yet to agree on a new deal with the Reds as the likes of Barcelona are linked. Here's the latest news coming out of Liverpool. Diaz talking to rivals Diaz has put the ball firmly in Liverpool's court after confirming he has held talks with rival clubs over a potential move. Speculation has been mounting since January that he could be on the move. The Colombian has only two years remaining on his contract and with talks over a new deal at an impasse, several top clubs around the world are interested. He said: "I'm very happy at Liverpool, I've always said so. They've welcomed me very well from day one. We are currently in contact with Liverpool, because we are talking to clubs. "That's normal given the transfer market that's opening. We're trying to arrange what's best for us. We're talking to clubs, it's normal in the market and we're looking at what's best for us. I'm waiting to see what happens. If they (Liverpool) give us a good renewal or I stay there for two years, I'll be happy. Now it's up to them.' Wirtz saga could drag on Former Bayer Leverkusen chief Rudi Voller has admitted Wirtz wants to join Liverpool, but warned the Reds that the move could "take a while". New verdict on Florian Wirtz to Liverpool transfer after Real Madrid 'surprise'
Liverpool are the clear favourites to sign Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen but Xabi Alonso's relationship with the player has led to links with Real Madrid Former Germany boss Joachim Low felt that Xabi Alonso made Real Madrid the favourites to sign Florian Wirtz if he did choose to leave Bayer Leverkusen - but Liverpool are the team leading the race for his signature. The German playmaker has been heavily linked with the exit door at the BayArena as a number of Europe's biggest clubs circle. Originally Manchester City, Liverpool and Bayern Munich all expressed their interest - before Pep Guardiola's side backed out. Wirtz looks to have decided that he'd rather move to Anfield as opposed to the Allianz Arena with the Reds already seeing several bids rejected. Real were then credited with an interest in the player - amid reports they could hijack his move to Anfield. Their focus has been on landing a new manager and Los Blancos have appointed Alonso, their former player, as their latest boss. But despite his relationship with Wirtz, Liverpool remain on the brink of his transfer. The ex-Germany head coach told Bild: "I just thought he'd be more likely to choose Real Madrid if he went abroad. He has developed enormously under him [Alonso] and they have a great relationship of trust. That's very important for a young player. "Nevertheless, I have no concerns that Wirtz will prevail – no matter where he would have gone. He plays with a naturalness that can't be coached. He possesses all the skills a footballer needs to be a world-class player." Wirtz and Alonso were two of the leading figure as Leverkusen stunned the German establishment by winning the Bundesliga last season. They also claimed the German Cup with their playmaker scoring 34 times across the last two seasons, but The Black and Reds have seen a number of their major names depart this summer - Jeremie Frimpong among them. Low claimed that a switch to Bayern "would have been a good fit" for Wirtz but the Bavarians don't look set to battle for the 22-year-old - leaving Liverpool free to pursue him should they eventually agree on a price with Leverkusen, who are holding out for £126m before they agree to his exit. The former Germany boss claimed: "Liverpool is a real statement because moving to the Premier League also involves a lot of adaptation and that starts with the rhythm of the game, but Florian Wirtz has no upper limit, he's definitely ready for the next step. We've had that feeling for a long time." Ex-Liverpool and Germany midfielder Dietmar Hamann praised Wirtz for sticking with his decision to join the Premier League champions, despite interest from elsewhere. "Florian Wirtz has made a decision. I believe it's the right one," Hamann told Sky Sports Germany. "Things are really happening at Liverpool under Arne Slot. They'll sign, or want to sign, two or three other players, from what I hear. That's why I think Wirtz has made a very good decision."
