While Afsal's timing fell just short of the 2025 World Athletics Championships automatic qualification mark of 1:44.50, it marked a significant improvement in his personal best and reaffirmed his status as one of India's top middle-distance athletes. The Kerala athlete had earlier clinched a silver medal at the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games with a time of 1:48.43.
Meanwhile, another Indian national record holder,
Animesh Kujur
, continued his fine form by winning the men's 200m in 20.45 seconds. Although slightly slower than his record-breaking 20.40 run at the 2025 Federation Cup, it was enough to secure gold in Dubai. Amlan Borgohain, the former national record holder, finished fifth with a timing of 21.08 seconds.
The meet offered a promising outlook for Indian athletics as the country's top runners build momentum ahead of a crucial international season.

Commentator's Virat Kohli Reference For Carlos Alcaraz In Old Video Goes Viral
Cricket might not be a global sport, but Virat Kohli is certainly a global athlete. The impact Virat has managed to create over the course of his esteemed career has drawn attention from not just cricket lovers but top athletes from other sports as well. As Spain's Carlos Alcaraz took on Italy's Jannik Sinner in the French Open 2025 men's singles final, an old video of the Spaniard went viral. In the video, the commentators couldn't help but compare the former's exploits with those of the Indian cricket icon. The video was from a match between Alcaraz and Stefanos Tsitsipas from 2023. Much like Virat did in cricket, Alcaraz has taken the tennis world by storm, thanks to his ability to excel in all conditions, against every opponent. The craft, skill, and grit that Alcaraz showed against Sinner in the Roland Garros summit clash on Sunday reminded the commentators of Virat. King Kohli is the face of World Cricket #Wimbledon — Shekhar (@Shekhar499) July 17, 2023 After losing the first two sets in the Roland Garros final, Alcaraz bounced back in style to beat Sinner 3-2 in a 5-set thriller that went down in history as the longest final ever in French Open history. In fact, Carlos Alcaraz saved three championship points as he produced an astonishing fightback. Reigning champion Alcaraz rallied from the brink of defeat to overcome world number one Sinner 4-6, 6-7 (4/7), 6-4, 7-6 (7/3), 7-6 (10/2) to clinch his fifth Grand Slam title after five hours and 29 minutes. The 22-year-old Spaniard is now unbeaten in five Grand Slam finals after snapping Sinner's 20-match winning run at the majors. Alcaraz pulled off his first-ever comeback from two sets down to stun Sinner in the longest Roland Garros final in history. It easily eclipsed the 1982 final in Paris when Mats Wilander triumphed in four sets over Guillermo Vilas in 4 hours and 42 minutes. Alcaraz becomes the third youngest man to win five Grand Slams -- after Bjorn Borg and compatriot Rafael Nadal -- following an incredible duel between the two stars of a new generation. Sinner fell agonisingly short of a third successive Grand Slam crown after last year's US Open title and back-to-back Australian Open triumphs.

When Jasprit Bumrah gave Cameron Green confidence with special message before surgery
Cameron Green revealed that Jasprit Bumrah reached out to him before he went in to get back surgery last year. Green had to go under the knife ahead of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy last year as scans found that he was struggling with a unique issue. This meant that Green missed the BGT series against India at home, the Champions Trophy and the IPL 2025 season. advertisementGreen recently made his comeback to the field after a lengthy lay-off and will be part of the World Test Championship final for Australia against South Africa. Speaking to 7News, Green said that he had a chat with Ben Dwarshius and Jason Behrendorff before getting the surgery and felt he had made the right choice as soon as he made his mind up about surgery. 'I spoke to Ben Dwarshuis, and Jason Behrendorff, who I'm very close to in WA,' Green said. "And they couldn't speak any higher about getting it." 'Both of them said they wished they got it earlier. I think that's obviously really reassuring. As soon as I decided to get it, I knew it was the right thing to do," said Green. Green said that Bumrah reached out to him the night before surgery and while the Indian pacer was playing in a Test match and it was a special moment for him. advertisement'Even Jasprit Bumrah reached out the night before I was getting surgery. He was in the middle of a Test match in India. Just a few things like that is really special,' said Green. Bumrah and Green were part of the Mumbai Indians squad back in 2023, but the Indian pacer missed that season as he himself underwent surgery on the back. Green said Bumrah's message and performances after getting surgery filled him with confidence. 'To get someone like him to reach out and then to watch him during the summer, to see how good he is obviously post-surgery, filled me with a lot of confidence,' Green said.'At the two-week mark after surgery, I was in the gym moving around. It was incredible.'Green is expected to be back in the Australia playing XI for the WTC final against South Africa. Must Watch
