"Unimaginable tragedy": Mallikarjun Kharge visits Air India plane crash site in Ahmedabad
Ahmedabad (Gujarat) [India], June 14 (ANI): Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Saturday visited the site of the Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad, in which over 240 people were killed.
Calling the accident an 'unimaginable tragedy,' Kharge offered deepest condolences to the victims of the plane crash.
'Visited the crash site of the devastating aeroplane tragedy which has shaken the nation. My deepest condolences and thoughts are with the families of the victims, crew, pilot and people on the ground who have lost their lives, including medical students. It is an unimaginable tragedy. The country is mourning and our prayers are with the bereaved,' Kharge wrote on X
Kharge was accompanied by Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, Pawan Khera and others.
Earlier, Kharge said that it is not right to blame anyone for the plane crash, but 'whoever is responsible should be held accountable.'
'At the time of such a tragedy, no one should compete to take credit. Someone takes pictures, someone goes and meet people. We only want families to get courage to face sorrow. Now that the black box has been found, we will see what the outcome is, because it is not right to blame someone on the spot. Compensation should be given; apart from this, whoever is responsible should be held accountable,' Kharge said.
Kharge urged the party's workers to provide assistance to the people affected in the tragedy.
'I would request my party workers and leaders to keep helping the people. If they need anything, medicine or anything else which is not available here, they should arrange for that too,' he said.
The Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner from Ahmedabad to London with 242 passengers crashed in Meghaninagar area shortly after it took off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on Thursday.
Only one person out of the 242 people on board survived the crash. As per Air India, the passengers comprised 169 Indians, 53 British nationals, one Canadian and seven Portuguese nationals. (ANI)

Air India plane crash: Former Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani's body identified
Ahmedabad: DNA testing has confirmed the death of former Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani in the June 12 Air India Flight AI171 crash in Ahmedabad, a senior government official aware of the matter said on Sunday. 'His (Rupani's) DNA sample was matched a few minutes ago,' the official said while speaking on condition of anonymity. The crash also killed several medical students and other people on the ground, as the plane ignited a massive fireball. Rupani, 68, was traveling to visit his daughter in London. To identify victims, forensic teams are conducting extensive DNA sampling at a dedicated facility in Ahmedabad. Relatives of passengers, including Rupani's family, have provided samples, which were matched with remains recovered from the wreckage. The process, ongoing round-the-clock, is challenging due to the crash's intensity, requiring meticulous analysis to ensure accurate identification. Rupani's final rites will be held in his hometown in Rajkot. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who visited the site, said, 'Vijaybhai's leadership transformed Gujarat; his loss is profound.' Gujarat chief minister Bhupendra Patel said, 'Rupani's vision and crisis leadership were unparalleled. Gujarat grieves deeply.' Air India and Tata Group announced ₹1 crore compensation for victims' families and ₹25 lakh interim payments. In Rajkot, Rupani's hometown, preparations for his final rites are underway. Medical superintendent of Civil Hospital Dr. Rajnish Patel told reporters today that a total of 31 DNAs have been identified so far and 12 bodies have been handed over to their respective family members.

Kedarnath chopper crash: Uttarakhand government suspends helicopter services
After seven people, including the pilot, lost their lives in a chopper crash near Kedarnath, Uttarakhand chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami announced that Helicopter services will remain suspended in the region for the next two days. "A control and command centre should be set up. Strict action will be taken against the culprits in this accident. Helicopter services will not run today or tomorrow. These services will remain closed until the safety of the passengers is ensured," Dhami told ANI on Sunday. The BJP leader also said that aviation companies have been directed to follow the rules of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, warning of strict action against the culprits of today's tragedy. Hong Kong Mulls Whether Beijing Should Handle Collusion Case
(Bloomberg) -- Hong Kong's security chief said the city is working with Beijing to determine whether the mainland should take control of a suspected case of foreign collusion, a move that would expand China's influence on national security-related cases in the financial hub. Hong Kong authorities are investigating whether to invoke Article 55 of the city's national security law, said Secretary for Security Chris Tang on a Commercial Radio program on Saturday. Article 55 outlines the circumstances under which Beijing's Office for Safeguarding National Security can exercise jurisdiction over Hong Kong's national security cases. 'The office will need to ascertain whether there were any situations specified under Article 55,' said Tang. 'We need to understand and investigate whether these had happened.'
