UCLA's Mick Cronin hires former player David Singleton as an assistant coach
LOS ANGELES (AP) — David Singleton, who played five seasons for UCLA, is returning to Westwood as an assistant coach under Mick Cronin.
Singleton spent the last two years playing in the NBA G League with the Atlanta Hawks' affiliate in Georgia.
He helped UCLA reach the NCAA Tournament Final Four in 2021. He also helped the Bruins make the tournament in 2022 and in 2023, when they made the Sweet 16. As a fifth-year senior, Singleton and the Bruins won the Pac-12 regular-season title.
Singleton set the school record for most games played with 164 while playing a fifth year allowed by the NCAA because of the COVID-19 pandemic. He ranks third on the career list for 3-pointers made with 219. He averaged 5.7 points and 1.8 rebounds during his career.
'He's always had his eye on becoming a coach, and we are thrilled that we can add him to our staff,' Cronin said in a statement Wednesday. 'He understands what it takes to get a team to perform at a high level.'
Singleton said he's grateful to return to his alma mater, where he graduated in 2023 with a sociology degree.
'I'm looking forward to adding to the legacy and program in any way that I can as an assistant coach,' he said in a statement.

ZURICH (AP) — Two-time overall World Cup champion Lara Gut-Behrami intends on retiring after the upcoming Olympic season. The Swiss skier revealed her plans at a sponsor's event in Zurich. The 34-year-old Gut-Behrami said she wants to move to London next year to join her husband, former Switzerland international Valon Behrami, who she said was taking over as sporting director at English soccer club Watford. 'I certainly won't be a cleaning lady,' Gut-Behrami said this week, while hinting she would like to become a mother. Gut-Behrami won her overall titles in 2015-16 and 2023-24 and has 48 World Cup victories — good for fifth on the all-time women's list. She also won gold in super-G and bronze in giant slalom at the 2022 Beijing Olympics, plus a bronze in downhill at the 2014 Sochi Games. One of Gut-Behrami's best performances came at the 2021 world championships in Cortina d'Ampezzo, where she swept gold in super-G and giant slalom and took bronze in downhill. Cortina will host women's skiing in the Winter Games in February, which would be Gut-Behrami's fourth Olympics. She missed the 2010 Vancouver Games due to injury. Jofra Archer joins England squad for 2nd test against India
LONDON (AP) — Fast bowler Jofra Archer could play his first test in four years after he was added to England's squad on Thursday. Archer joined up for the second test against India next week at Edgbaston. England leads the five-test series 1-0. The 30-year-old played the last of his 13 tests in February 2021 in India. Following his right thumb injury during the Indian Premier League, Archer played his first red-ball game in more than four years this week for Sussex in the English County Championship. Liverpool still spending: Left back Milos Kerkez joins from Bournemouth
LIVERPOOL, England (AP) — Liverpool signed Hungary left back Milos Kerkez to a long-term contract on Thursday after paying a reported transfer fee of 40 million pounds ($54 million) to Bournemouth. The Premier League champion's most expensive addition, Germany midfielder Florian Wirtz, was announced last Friday, and that followed the signing of Netherlands right back Jeremie Frimpong, with both coming from Bayer Leverkusen. 'I'm really happy,' Kerkez said. 'It's a real honour for me, a privilege to come to play for one of the biggest clubs in the world, (the) biggest club in England. I'm just really, really happy and excited.' Kerkez's arrival raises questions about 31-year-old Andy Robertson's future at Anfield. The Scotland left back has been linked to a move to Atletico Madrid. The 21-year-old Kerkez made 38 Premier League appearances for Bournemouth last season when the Cherries finished ninth with a club-record 56 points in the English top flight.
