How China's Labubu became Pop Mart's $1.8 billion plush powerhouse
Labubu, the plush toy from China's Pop Mart is a social media darling, but the toothy little monsters are far from an overnight success. Having appeared a decade ago, Labubus may have finally cemented their place in the collectible toy market for years to come. The Labubu, by artist and illustrator Kasing Lung , first appeared with pointed ears and pointy teeth, in three picture books inspired by Nordic mythology in 2015. In 2019, Lung struck a deal with Pop Mart, a company that caters to toy connoisseurs and influencers, to sell Labubu figurines. But it wasn't until Pop Mart started selling Labubu plush toys on key rings in 2023 that the toothy monsters suddenly seemed to be everywhere, including in the hands of Rihanna, Kim Kardashian and NBA star Dillon Brooks. K-pop singer Lisa of Blackpink began posting images of hers for her more than 100 million followers on Instagram and on TikTok, where Labubu pandemonium has broken out. There are 1.4 million #Labubu TikTok posts and counting, videos of fans unboxing them, showing styles inspired by them, and of course, Labubu cosplay. Fans have latched on to Labubu's mashup of play and fashion, making them accessories on handbags, backpacks and belts, or hanging them from car mirrors. Live Events "The character has evolved into a collectible and style symbol, resonating with fans who connect with its quirky aesthetic and unique backstory," Emily Brough, Popmart's head of IP licensing in the Americas, said. Labubu has been a bonanza for Pop Mart. Its revenue more than doubled in 2024 to 13.04 billion yuan ($1.81 billion), thanks in part to its elvish monster. Revenue from Pop Mart's plush toys soared more than 1,200% in 2024, nearly 22% of its overall revenue, according to the company's annual report. Aside from their ability to pique the interest of toy aficionados and fashionistas, Labubu latched on to the blind box phenomenon, where the purchaser does not know exactly which version of the plush toy they will get. And Pop Mart made sure there is a Labubu for everyone, regardless of income. Most are priced in a wide rage between $20 and $300, with certain collaborations or limited editions priced higher, according to Brough. Unlike many toys, Labubu devotees include a large number of adults. Buyers aged 18 and over drove a year-over-year increase of more than $800 million in the US toy market in 2024, according to market research firm Circana. Adult shoppers, mostly female, bought the toys for themselves. In 2025's first quarter, toy sales for those aged 18 and over rose 12% from the prior-year period. At $1.8 billion, adults also accounted for the highest spending among all age groups in the quarter. Like many retailers, Pop Mart is actively monitoring negotiations between the US and just about every one of its trading partners as prices may be impacted. The situation with China is at the forefront, with President Donald Trump saying on Friday that the country "violated" an agreement with the United States on trade talks. Right now Pop Mart, whose products are manufactured across Asia, says that it is continuously scaling production and expanding distribution across its online shop, retail stores and blind box vending machines to meet increasing demand.

Chingoli — the litter collectors who make weddings glitter
1 2 Kochi: It was an idea born out of a vision to reduce the use of plastic waste at public functions. It nudged a group of seven women from humble backgrounds in Alappuzha district to take up the task of creating decorations using coconut palm leaves. Marykutty, Sarala, Sobhana, Sajitha, Lakshmi, Suja S and Thankamani Vijayan — all in the 40-60 age group, learned the basic lessons of palm leaf craft two years ago by watching YouTube. They now make decorations for weddings, temple festivals, housewarming functions and other events. Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Ganapathy, roaring lion, peafowl, timid swan, arch, lantern and bouquet made of palm leaves attract people's attention at many places in Alappuzha nowadays. The seven members of the group Chingoli — which is also the name of the panchayat they belong to — are part of Haritha Karma Sena engaged by the local body to collect plastic waste from households and shops in the area. "A training programme of a self-help group was held in our area to give us an insight into what can be done to reduce plastic waste. We thought why not use coconut palm leaves which are plentiful in Kerala. We started exploring avenues to learn the basics of palm leaf craft. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Speel gratis in je browser – Geen download of installatie nodig! Taonga Farm Nu afspelen Undo We eventually sought YouTube's help and improved our skills through practice. We started off with decorations at small events in the panchayat. People, especially those who are conscious of plastic waste pollution, started approaching us. We do not have any promotional activities, there is only word of mouth publicity," said Suja S, 56, who along with others engages in waste collection and segregation for 15 days a month. Chingoli normally receives at least two orders monthly. The group uses both tender and matured palm leaves, which give distinct white and green colours to the decor. With the support of a carpenter, they make a prototype of the figures in plywood, which are also sustainable. "We fasten the palm leaf shapes onto the plywood frame using a stapler. We cut the leaves or twist them depending on the décor's style. The decor has many takers now. We got two back-to-back works from two temples in a week in April this year for Rs 75,000. We have a major order for decorating a stage for a big wedding function in Nov," said Suja. They hope more people will come forward to use eco-friendly decorations instead of plastic decorations during festival and wedding seasons.

Avantika Malik On Divorce With Imran Khan: ‘Would Never Poison My Daughter Against Him'
Last Updated: Avantika Malik says she would never come between Imran Khan and their daughter, calling attempts to hurt their bond "damaging to the child." Imran Khan's ex-wife Avantika Malik has opened up about their separation and its impact on their daughter Imara, stating that she would never let personal emotions come in the way of their child's bond with her father. In a candid conversation on Nayandeep Rakshit's YouTube channel, Avantika reflected on the emotional challenges of their divorce and the decisions she made for the sake of their daughter. Imran and Avantika parted ways after nearly a decade of marriage. When they broke the news of their separation to their daughter, who was just five at the time, it sparked confusion and fear in the child. 'When we told Imara for the first time that I and Imran were not going to be married anymore, the first question that popped into her head was whether she was going to lose her parents," Avantika recalled. She added that having examples within her family helped Imara understand that both her parents would remain constants in her life. Acknowledging that it's often tough for children to accept new relationships in their parents' lives, Avantika admitted it took time for Imara to adjust. 'Every child has a certain preconceived notion of what a family is supposed to look like," she said. Over time, however, Imara adapted. Avantika shared light-heartedly, 'We joke about it now, and I will ask her whether I should get a new boyfriend or not? She tells me there is no need and it is perfect, just the two of us." Avantika was also asked whether her own relationship with Imran ever interfered with co-parenting. She responded firmly, 'I didn't have a very good relationship with my father in my early years, and I was very clear from the beginning that I did not want that for my child." She added, 'If you decide to poison your child… it's because you are bitter and you have certain resentments. I wanted her to have a very beautiful relationship with him, and me trying to damage that is ultimately going to hurt her." First Published:
