INTEREST in Johor's pilot school programmes is growing, with more parents – including those from outside the state – showing keen interest.
Johor education and information committee chairman Aznan Tamin said the programmes, namely those involving cross-border teacher training with Singapore, were starting to gain traction.
'To date, 30 teachers have been sent to Singapore under the state's pilot programme focusing on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) subjects.
'More than 30 English teachers will also undergo training there as part of our continuous efforts to enhance the quality of education,' he added.
He said the state was hopeful of seeing improved student performance and school achievements within one to two years, especially with infrastructure upgrades scheduled to begin this month.
'We are not only upgrading physical facilities, but also investing in the capacity building of teachers, which will directly benefit the students.'
Aznan said the teacher training programme, conducted in collaboration with Singapore's National Institute of Education (NIE), would continue monthly, with additional support from the state government.
A total of 212 primary and secondary school teachers have been sent for professional development at NIE in phases since last November.
These teachers are being prepared for the opening of Johor's pilot Bangsa Johor school.
'We want all 212 teachers to obtain certification for the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
'They will play a crucial role at the Bangsa Johor pilot school, where we are placing greater emphasis on STEM subjects,' said Aznan.
He added that professional training sessions at NIE covered over 10 modules, focusing on strengthening pedagogical skills, introducing innovative STEM applications and fostering international collaboration in education.
'The training does not just equip teachers with knowledge, but also provides fresh perspectives that they can bring back to their classrooms,' he said.
Two primary and two secondary schools have been selected for the pilot programme – SMK Kota Puteri 2 with 2,352 students and SK Kota Puteri 4 with 532 students in Pasir Gudang; and SMK Tasek Utara with 611 students and SK Tasek Utara with 802 students in Johor Baru.
Aznan said students at these schools would be required to complete at least 112 hours in STEM subjects each year, compared to a minimum of 64 hours in other schools.
At the school level, STEM education has been introduced, with a focus on pupils in Years Four, Five and Six for primary schools, and Forms One, Two and Three for secondary schools.
'Feedback from parents has been positive and we are seeing interest from families outside Johor wanting to enrol their children in the pilot schools,' he said.
Separately, Aznan said the state government would also be enhancing school infrastructure and public amenities to ensure greater comfort for students, teachers and visitors.
'We are confident that with these improvements, Johor will continue to be a leader in education innovation and excellence.'

Education reform urgent for Sabah's future - Hajiji

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor and guests pose for a group photo with participants of the Astounding Research Innovation STEM Exploration (ARISE) 2025 International Education Research Conference after the officiation ceremony at SICC, Kota Kinabalu on Wednesday. KOTA KINABALU (May 28): The transformation of the state's education system is an urgent necessity, not a choice, to ensure Sabah's students are equipped to face future challenges, said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor. He said recent research data from 2024 revealed that only 65 per cent of students demonstrated good or excellent problem-solving skills, while just 72 per cent felt confident applying scientific knowledge in daily life. 'This clearly shows that we cannot be complacent. Many students still struggle to grasp fundamental STEM concepts. Therefore, education reform must be a top priority for all stakeholders,' he said when officiating the Astounding Research Innovation STEM Exploration (ARISE) 2025 International Education Research Conference at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC) on Wednesday. He emphasized that research- and innovation-based teaching approaches must be strengthened and mainstreamed to ensure Sabah's education system remains relevant, inclusive and competitive. He also urged educators, educational institutions, researchers and policymakers to continue exploring and enhancing educational strategies that align with the digital era and current industry needs. Hajiji said ARISE 2025, which gathered over 600 participants from both local and international institutions, including from the United Kingdom, Spain, the Philippines, China and Ireland, serves as a vital platform to pioneer global education collaboration. 'This conference not only brings together educators, researchers and policymakers from around the world, but also promotes the empowerment of education rooted in science, technology, and culture,' he said. He also underlined the importance of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) as well as Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education as key drivers in developing high-quality, competitive and innovative human capital in Sabah. In that regard, he noted that the state government has allocated RM41.75 million this year to the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation Sabah (KSTI), the Sabah Skills and Training Centre (SSTC), and the Sabah Creative Economy and Innovation Centre for the implementation of various training and skills empowerment programmes. Among the key initiatives, he said, are Kembara Sains Borneo, Sabah Science Carnival, Technology and Innovation Competitions, STEM Education Festival, Roboneo Programme, and Sabah Screen Fest – all of which serve as vital platforms to spark student interest in technology and engineering. Hajiji also welcomed the presentation of 13 sub-themes at the conference, covering areas such as digital education, Malay studies, Islamic education, guidance and counselling, sports science, visual arts, and early childhood education. He expressed confidence that this exchange of knowledge would foster international collaboration and elevate the global profile of researchers and educational institutions in Sabah. 'Educators are the heart and backbone of successful education transformation. I call on them to boldly explore research and innovation in education,' he said. According to him, the conference also reflects the state government's commitment under the Sabah Maju Jaya Development Plan 2021–2025, which prioritizes education as a catalyst for sustainable state development.

Sarawak allocates RM20mil to provide free tuition to weak SPM students

KUCHING: Sarawak has allocated RM20 million this year to support a programme aimed at improving students' performances, particularly in the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia examination. A core element of the Sarawak Enhancement Education Programme (SEEP) is the provision of free tuition to students, specifically targeting those students who have not passed their school-based examinations. State Education, Innovation and Talent Development Minister Datuk Seri Roland Sagah told the state assembly today the initiative was a testament to Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg's on-going commitment to strengthening education in Sarawak. He said the programme focused on Form 3 students, offering tuition in core subjects such as English, Mathematics, Science, and History. For upper secondary students, he said the programme extends to include tuition for all pure science subjects. "The overarching objective is to enhance students' readiness for STEM-related courses at tertiary level and to prepare them for future careers within STEM fields," he told the state legislative when winding up debates on his ministry. "Beyond free tuition, SEEP encompasses a range of supplementary activities. "These include the development of comprehensive learning modules for both teachers and students, the creation of a dedicated SEEP Management System, and the organisation of various webinars and workshops. "Furthermore, the programme facilitates crucial engagement sessions with teachers and parents."
