Tractor-trailer fire backing up I-64W 2.5 miles in Alleghany County
ALLEGHANY COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) – The Virginia Department of Transportation is reporting a tractor-trailer fire causing back-ups at mile mark 22 of Interstate 64 in Alleghany County.
All westbound lanes are closed, and traffic is currently backed up around 2.5 miles. Drivers may experience delays until further notice.

Additionally, the westbound entrance ramp at mile marker 24 is blocked.

New driving campaign aimed at distracted driving in the Star City
ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) – A new campaign in the Star City aims to address distracted driving, titled 'Focused Driving, Safe Arriving.' Distracted driving has increased throughout Roanoke, Officials say over the last 5 years, they've seen a 60% increase in crashes involving a distraction. To combat this, the city along with the Department of Motor Vehicles has launched the 'Focused Driving, Safe Arriving' summer campaign. The campaign is working to decrease distracted driving, by increasing awareness of the risks and consequences, the laws behind it, and giving practical ways to avoid distracted driving. Posters discouraging distracted driving are being put up in parking lots and businesses. All in the hopes of creating a safer Roanoke, and to help save lives. Virginia promoting teen driving safety with 'Arrive Alive' program 'The goal of the campaign is to reduce distraction involved crashes. The message that we chose was 'focused driving safe arriving,'. So instead of kind of like wrist slapping, like don't distracted drive. We wanted to encourage people to do the right thing, which is basically when you get behind the wheel of a car to have a singular focus so your hands are on the wheel, you're looking out the windshield and your mind is on the task at hand, which is driving,' said Rob Issem, Complete Streets & Vision Zero Coordinator with the City. The city says there are multiple different ways those at home can participate in the campaign. You can take the focused driving pledge online, become a campaign ambassador by placing the special yard signs in your parking lots. or if you're an artist, you can create a piece of art connected with the slogan 'Focused Driving, Safe Arriving,' and 10 lucky people will get to see their art on a signal box in downtown. Motorcyclist dies in crash on Route 43 in Bedford County
BEDFORD COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) – Virginia State Police is investigating a fatal motorcycle crash on May 31 around 4:38 p.m. on Route 43 near Sheep Creek Road in Bedford County. According to police, a 2024 Harley-Davidson Glide was traveling east on Route 43 when it went off the right side of the road and hit a stump. The driver was then ejected from the Harley. 69-year-old by Robert Ira Horenberg, of Potomac, Md. was identified by VSP as the motorcycle operator. Crashes at two tunnels slowing down Memorial Day weekend traffic
NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Crashes in the area of two of the region's tunnels Friday are slowing down traffic on this Memorial Day holiday weekend. All westbound lanes of I-264 at the Downtown Tunnel were closed Friday afternoon due to a crash, the Virginia Department of Transportation westbound lanes of I-264 at the Downtown Tunnel reopened before 4 p.m., but VDOT said drivers can continue to expect delays, with backups of about one is backed up for more than a mile, and three is no traffic currently in the tunnel. There was also a crash that closed I-64 westbound near the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel Friday afternoon. Lanes have since reopened, but traffic backups approaching the HRBT are about 6.5 miles, according to VDOT. Southbound traffic at the James River Bridge was heavy, but steady, according to VDOT traffic cameras, while there were backups of about two miles on I-664 southbound at the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel. Traffic was also backed up on Route 58 westbound in Suffolk following a vehicle fire Friday afternoon. VDOT suspended many highway work zones and lifted most lane closures on interstates and other major roads in Virginia for holiday travel from noon Friday until noon Tuesday, May 27.
