Sister in court after film director found dead with Rolex watch missing
A woman has appeared in court over the death of her film director sister who was found fatally stabbed in the neck with her valuable Rolex watch missing.
Nancy Pexton, 69, is accused of murdering Jennifer Abbott Dauward, known as Sarah Steinberg, at her flat in Camden, north London.
Ms Dauward, who was nine months older than the defendant, was last seen alive on CCTV footage on June 10 as she returned from walking her dog.
Neighbours have said they regularly saw her walking her pet corgi in the area with one describing her as 'exuberant' and 'vivacious'.
Police were called to the victim's first floor flat in Mornington Place at 5.45pm on June 13 after being alerted by her concerned niece.
Ms Dauward was found on the floor of the living room partially covered with a blanket and with black tape on her mouth, the Old Bailey heard on Tuesday.
Paramedics attended and she was pronounced dead at 6.08pm.
Prosecutor Ben Holt said the victim would usually wear a Rolex and a Cartier bracelet but when her body was found, the watch was not there.
A post-mortem examination found the cause of death was a sharp trauma to the neck with eight stab wounds identified, the court was told.
Pexton was arrested on June 18 and later charged with her sister's murder, the Rolex having been recovered from a bag, the court was told.
Pexton, of no fixed address, spoke only to confirm her identity by video-link from Bronzefield prison during the preliminary hearing before Judge Judy Khan KC.
A plea hearing was set for September 9 with a provisional trial at the Old Bailey from April 7 next year.
Judge Khan remanded the defendant into custody.

Chester Weger, most infamously known as the "Starved Rock Killer," has died at age 86. His longtime attorney Andy Hale confirmed his death, saying he died peacefully Sunday, surrounded by family. Weger became notorious after he was convicted in the murder of a woman in the Starved Rock State Park in 1960. He confessed to killing three women there when he was 21 years old, while he was a dishwasher at the lodge. The bodies of Lillian Oetting, Mildred Lindquist and Frances Murphy were found partially nude and beaten to death in St. Louis Canyon in the state park. He first applied for parole in 1972. Twenty-four of his parole requests were denied until 2019; he was released from prison in 2020. Since his release, Weger had attempted to get a new trial for Oetting's murder, sticking to his claims of innocence. His request for a new trial was denied last week. Macomb County man reconvicted of shooting, killing his boss
A Macomb County man has been reconvicted in the 2018 murder of his boss in Clinton Township, Michigan. Prosecutors allege that on Jan. 9, 2018, Jerry Motley brought a gun to his job at Reliable Fence in Clinton Township and shot his co-worker, Angelo Micale, twice. Officials say Motley then went to the office of the company's owner, Thomas Badke, and shot him at close range, killing Badke. Micale survived the shooting. On June 20, a jury convicted Motley, 32, of first-degree premeditated murder, going armed with a dangerous weapon with unlawful intent and two counts of felony firearm. A jury rejected Motley's claim that he was legally insane at the time of the shooting. Motley was on trial for a second time after prosecutors said his first conviction was overturned after his defense team was found to be ineffective. "Justice has finally been served. Despite the delays and the defendant's claims of insanity, the jury saw the truth. This was a cold, calculated, and premeditated murder. The verdict reaffirms the strength of the evidence and the seriousness of this crime. I commend our trial team for their dedication to securing justice for the victims and the community," said Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido in a statement. Motley will be sentenced on Aug. 7.

Hit-and-run driver who killed teenager in Minneapolis, injured 5 others sentenced to 23 years
A Minneapolis woman who drove into a crowd during a fight in downtown Minneapolis last year, killing a teenager and injuring five others, was sentenced to more than 23 years on Tuesday. Latalia Margalli, 23, pleaded guilty in May to one count of second-degree unintentional murder and five counts of second-degree assault. Margalli was among a group of people fighting at the intersection of Fifth Street and Hennepin Avenue on Sept. 14, 2024. She left the fight, got in her car and drove through a crowd of roughly a dozen people, charging documents said. Sixteen-year-old De'Miaya Broome was among those Margalli hit. She was hospitalized and later died. Five others were also injured. WCCO "My thoughts are with De'Miaya's family, and all others impacted by this tragic incident," Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty said. "Ms. Margalli chose to drive into the crowd, taking De'Miaya's life and irreparably harming so many people. This sentence holds Ms. Margalli accountable and protects our community." Margalli was sentenced to 285 months, and has 284 days of credit for time she already served.
