Bills 1st-Round Pick Gets Sad Reality Check from Cowboys
The Buffalo Bills' recently traded cornerback Kaiir Elam to the Dallas Cowboys in a true give-away.
Buffalo sent a 2025 sixth-round draft pick to the Cowboys in exchange for a 2025 fifth-rounder and a 2026 seventh-rounder. Do the math on this and contrary to omne critic's take, nobody is "fleecing'' anybody.

These were pennies being exchanged.
But now Bills Mafia gets to turn its attention to Dallas one more time.
Elam, the former first-round pick from 2022, never caught on in Buffalo and could not crack the permanent starting lineup here.
Dallas might be desperate enough, especially with Trevon Diggs still rehabbing and unlikely to start the season on the 53-man roster, to change Elam's status as a first-teamer.
But this week, a statement was made.
Not an insult.
Just a statement.
Elam, a star at the University of Florida, whose greatness has yet to translate to the professional game, was eligible this week to have his fifth-year option picked up. When a team does so, it's a sign. ...

A financial commitment and a sign of faith.
Dallas, not surprisingly, passed on that opportunity - a sad reality check for a first-round pick from Buffalo.
Elam in his rookie year made six starts and gathered two interceptions. But ...
Things only went downhill from there.
Elam tore a ligament in this ankle prior to start of his second season in Buffalo. He tried to play through the injury, but seemed to hurt the ankle worse by running on it and ended up on injured reserve. He only played in three games that season.
Unfortunately for Elam, he was replaced by Christian Benford, who went on to play well and earn a lucrative extension.

In 2024 the Bills suffered an injury in the secondary when Tre'Davious White went down with an injury. Coach Sean McDermott tried to use Elam in his stead and things again just did not work out.
Elam was on the field for only 35 percent of the snaps. That is when his future in Buffalo was soured.
Elam, still just 23, will likely be a one-year rental in Dallas unless he somehow proves to be an incredible revelation ... which is possible, of course.
But the fact is, the Bills gave up on Elam in 2025... and now the Cowboys are giving up a chance to keep him in 2026.

Buffalo Bills Added 'Summer Breakout Candidate'
Buffalo Bills Added 'Summer Breakout Candidate' originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Buffalo Bills are trying to make their way to the franchise's first Super Bowl appearance in 30 years. General manager Brandon Beane has been wheeling and dealing this offseason trying to construct the best possible roster they can to bring the Lombardi Trophy to Buffalo. Advertisement Bleacher Report's Alex Ballentine identified each NFL team's most important position battle and breakout candidate, with both categories directly tied to moves Beane has made this offseason. The Bills' top summer breakout candidate is former Los Angeles Chargers' wide receiver Joshua Palmer. "Josh Palmer might not be a breakout player in the traditional sense, but he's someone who could have a bigger impact than most are anticipating." Ballentine wrote. "General manager Brandon Beane was adamant that the Bills had the right receivers on the roster after the draft. Adding Palmer is one of the reasons why." Ballentine believes that playing next to Josh Allen specifically can help elevate Palmer's production to the next level. Advertisement "He already has four years of NFL experience, including a 769-yard season in 2022." Ballentine noted. "But he's still just 25 years old, and playing in a more established offensive ecosystem in Buffalo with Josh Allen could see him reach a different level." Ballentine drew attention to the cornerback position as the most important position battle for the Bills, especially as it pertains to who starts on the outside opposite of Christian Benford. "The Bills have every right to be thinking Super Bowl, but they won't get there if they don't have the secondary to compete with elite offenses." Ballentine wrote. "That's one of the biggest questions heading into summer team activities. Specifically, who is starting across from Christian Benford?" The Bills brought back a pair of veterans in Dane Jackson and Tre'Davious White, while also drafting a pair of cornerbacks in Maxwell Hairston and Dorian Strong, meaning there's a lot of possibilities for how the battle could shake out. Advertisement "Rasul Douglas manned the spot last season, but he struggled late in the season and hasn't been re-signed." Ballentine pointed out. "Ideally, Hairston would be able to win the job as a first-round pick. That would go a long way toward helping fans forget about the Kaiir Elam experience." ESPN Trade Proposal Sends Trey Hendrickson to Bills
ESPN Trade Proposal Sends Trey Hendrickson to Bills originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Buffalo Bills are in an arms race with the rest of the AFC, but they are also in a race against time. Super Bowl windows don't last forever, and while having Josh Allen under center means it won't slam shut, each passing season increases the likelihood that one of the titans of the sport walks away empty-handed. Advertisement As such, urgency remains high in Orchard Park. The Bills clearly aren't afraid to acquire talent via trade or signing. Twice, Buffalo has acquired post-prime edge rushers to chase down the conference's best quarterbacks. However, signing Joey Bosa isn't necessarily enough to get over the hump, especially after an offseason injury clouded his production. That lends itself to additional speculation, including a recent brainstorm from ESPN, linking Cincinnati Bengals edge rusher Trey Hendrickson. The Bills' hypothetical trade proposal lands the final piece of a championship defense for just a 2026 second-round pick. 'The Bengals have made it clear they don't want to give away Hendrickson, so I'm not even sure the Bills' (likely late) second-rounder would be enough,' ESPN said of Dan Graziano's offer. 'But if the Bengals' demands drop, I could see Buffalo pouncing to secure the veteran edge rusher it needs to take down Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes in the playoffs. Advertisement 'With offseason pickup Joey Bosa already injured, this move would help the Bills' pass rush add a stronger, healthier option. Hendrickson might not get the new contract of his dreams, but perhaps Bills general manager Brandon Beane could sell him on an improved chance to get to the Super Bowl.' The biggest obstacle to this deal getting across the finish line is the balance of power in the AFC. Like Buffalo, Cincinnati is dangerous – no matter what – with quarterback Joe Burrow. It took an act of Godly sabotage to make a defense so bad a season ago, and the Bengals aren't incentivized to make one of their main competitors even better while making their defense worse. However, pairing Hendrickson with Gregory Rousseau along the edge with two quality starters between them at tackle would be Buffalo's best attempt at mirroring the Philadelphia Eagles, who beat Kansas City in the trenches to win the Super Bowl. The Bills have a quarterback capable of going toe-to-toe with the best player in the sport. It is worth paying for a defense that can do the same. Paige Bueckers Leads WNBA in Unfortunate Stat After Wings' Loss to Chicago Sky
Paige Bueckers Leads WNBA in Unfortunate Stat After Wings' Loss to Chicago Sky originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Dallas Wings suffered a narrow 97-92 defeat to the Chicago Sky on Thursday night, despite a standout performance from Arike Ogunbowale, who scored a season-high 37 points. The Wings briefly took the lead with just over two minutes remaining, but the Sky responded with a decisive 6-0 run to close out the game. Advertisement On a night when star forward Angel Reese had just two baskets, the Sky were led by Kamilla Cardoso, who finished with 23 points, while Courtney Vandersloot set all-time franchise records for points and field goals, contributing 13 points and nine assists. Paige Bueckers, the Wings' rookie guard, added 15 points in the loss, continuing her solid start to the season. Dallas Wings guard Paige Bueckers (5).© Jerome Miron-Imagn Images Through her first five games, Bueckers has averaged 14.7 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 6.7 assists per game, leading all rookies in assists. However, a concerning statistic has emerged: Bueckers has yet to score a single point in clutch situations this season. In nine clutch minutes this season, Bueckers has missed all four of her field goal attempts (via WNBA Stats). Bueckers is tied atop the WNBA for fewest clutch baskets among players who have attempted at least four field goal attempts in those situations. Washington Mystics guard Jade Melbourne is the only other player with four attempts and zero makes. Advertisement Entering the WNBA with significant expectations, Bueckers was the first overall pick in the 2025 WNBA Draft after a stellar collegiate career at UConn. She made history by becoming the first player in WNBA history to record at least 60 points and 30 assists in her first five games. The Wings will have an opportunity to bounce back and address these concerns in a rematch against the Sky on Saturday night in Dallas.
