Lucknow: Calling the Emergency imposed by the Indira Gandhi-led Cong government in 1975 "a sin that can never be forgotten", chief minister

said that the inclusion of the words "secular" and "socialist" in the Preamble during that period was "an attack on India's soul".
At a symposium to mark the 50th anniversary of the Emergency, observed as Samvidan Hatya Diwas by BJP across the country, the CM asked Cong to apologise to the entire nation, especially Dalits and the marginalised, as it had worked to suppress their voices during the two-year period.
The CM also honoured 26 Loktantra Senanis, those who were jailed during the Emergency, and announced cashless treatment facilities for them and their family members.
Some of them also recounted their experiences of the Emergency.
Hitting out against Opposition parties, the CM pointed out that neither Samajwadi Party nor the RJD had made any statements or social media posts against the Emergency. Leaders from both parties were then against Cong's actions and had protested against its dictatorial measures.
