What's wrong with what Kamal Haasan said: DMK MLA backs actor amid Kannada row

Tamil Nadu's PWD Minister and senior DMK leader KN Nehru has come out in support of actor-politician Kamal Haasan after he faced backlash over his remarks linking Kannada's roots to Tamil. 'What is wrong with what he said? All languages, including Telgu and Malayalam, came from Tamil. There is nothing wrong with what he said. The Judge had deliberately said something,' said Minister Nehru, extending support to the controversy erupted following Kamal Haasan's statement that 'Kannada branched from Tamil,' sparking widespread outrage in demands for an apology, Kamal Haasan refused to apologise, saying that his remarks were misunderstood. 'Love will never apologise,' Haasan maintained, refusing to withdraw his comment even after the matter reached the Karnataka High Court. As the controversy intensified, Kamal Haasan's legal team told the High Court that 'Art can wait, release can wait,' as the actor decided not to release his upcoming film Thug Life in BJP State President Tamilisai Sounderrajan criticised Kamal Haasan, accusing him of promoting divisive language politics for personal gain. 'Kamal Haasan took Vishwaroopam and, when a controversy emerged over religion, said that if the controversy is true, he will leave the country in 2013. But today he is acting against the unity of India for his own interest. You want Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam when you want to make money out of Cinema. But you are taking language politics as a fake-faced politician. People like us who love Tamil urge you not to destroy the unity of the nation,' Sounderrajan InMust Watch IN THIS STORY#Tamil Nadu

Boost for Madurai makeup artists as kids in divine avatar turn heads at Chithirai festival

MADURAI: As the Chithirai festival transforms Madurai into a sea of drums, flowers and chants, it's not just the deities who shine - it's the kids dressed as them. The streets around the Meenakshi temple become a runway of miniature gods and goddesses, with children posing in intricate costumes, striking makeup and jewellery. And what's behind this growing trend? A booming business for local makeup artists. Among the kids this year was 14-year-old Dharanishri from Thirupparankundram. Dressed in a dazzling Meenakshi costume, with intricate face paint and elaborate jewellery, she turned heads as festivalgoers stopped her for selfies. 'She was mesmerised by the deity look last year and insisted we do it for her this time,' said her mother, A Subalakshmi. Ahead of the festival, Dharanishri kept reminding her parents of her wish. 'That's when a colleague recommended a makeup artist in Maasi Street who had styled her sister last year. We had a hassle-free experience. The artist handled everything from costume and jewellery to makeup, at an affordable rate,' she said. The family plans to continue the tradition in the coming years. Like Subalakshmi, many families have been flocking to local makeup studios in Madurai city since the beginning of the festival to have their children styled as deities.
