Free streaming service that ‘tripled its userbase' offering countless ‘unmissable' shows
This streaming service is home to some of the best and most popular shows ever made, and their CEO has shared some of the underappreciated gems available on the platform
The CEO of a leading streaming service has pointed out some hidden treasures and fan favourites available on their platform.
Boasting an archive that includes some of the most acclaimed and beloved series, subscribers are spoilt for choice with hundreds of options catering to every possible taste.
An extra perk is the platform's free, ad-supported tier, offering viewers the chance to binge-watch thousands of episodes without spending a penny.
For those who'd rather skip the ads, a minimum monthly fee of just £4.99 unlocks the first premium tier; and for only £5.99 a month, subscribers can stream on four devices simultaneously and download content to view offline.
Anime powerhouse Crunchyroll offers one of the most budget-friendly streaming experiences around, and Express Online recently chatted with CEO Rahul Purini, who shared his top picks for those exploring Japanese animation for the first time, reports the Express.
"We say there's anime for everybody," he explained. "Every individual has different interests and passions. So we have shows for everybody."
Crunchyroll has seen its paying membership balloon to 15 million between 2021-2024, while the overall user count has soared past the 120 million mark, clearly indicating that the global hunger for anime shows no signs of waning.
"There are what we call Shonen shows, which are fighting shows targeted at boys and male audiences, everything from Dragonball to Naruto and now Demon Slayer," Purini explained.
"There are [shows with] great female protagonists, like Frieren or Sailor Moon, that are amazing shows."
Yet, the most glowing praise was reserved for a series that has recently concluded its second season, with hints dropped to Deadline about an eagerly awaited third season on the horizon.
"I would say, right now, one of the most popular shows, globally, on our platform is a show called Solo Leveling. It just came back for its season two earlier this year and it's breaking records. Fans love it," Purini said with enthusiasm.
"So, there's great shows for every fan and, depending on what kind of shows they like for their entertainment, there's definitely anime filling that.
"It's got stunning visuals, great storytelling, all of that from an amazing studio. But I also think, one, it's a simple story told really well. It's also got a lot of themes that younger audiences are familiar with.
"Audiences who are gamers who have played RPG games, they understand and have grown up with these themes, so all of that being brought into a story format is just connecting really well with audiences.
Solo Leveling unfolds in a reality besieged by monsters from another dimension, with select humans awakening as 'hunters' to combat these dark forces. Hunters typically have static power levels upon their awakening, but the narrative takes a twist with Sung Jin-woo, a notoriously feeble hunter who receives the unique chance to enhance his abilities through a mysterious system, sending him on a perilous journey.
Purini also shone a light on Frieren, a female-fronted fantasy saga that commands a "huge audience" despite not quite matching the fame of Solo Leveling, suggesting it may be an underappreciated gem.
The chief executive further remarked: "There are also countless new series starting every year as well as anime staples returning for their next seasons over the next few months.
"This quarter we have an amazing lineup of shows. My Hero Academia: Vigilantes, which is a new show from the same IP as My Hero Academia, which is really popular.
"There's another new show called To Be Hero X, which seems to be a fan-favourite. We have One Piece returning, Fire Force season three. So some really great shows in the spring lineup and I think we have some amazing shows for the rest of the year as well."
With a plethora of series spanning action, adventure, horror, romance, and slice-of-life drama, subscribing to Crunchyroll emerges as an obvious choice for those eager to explore the vast universe of Japanese anime.
Sign up to ad-supported Crunchyroll for free or remove ads from as little as £4.99 a month.

Rafael Nadal's uncle blasts Carlos Alcaraz in rant and suggests he quit tennis
Toni Nadal has suggested that Carlos Alcaraz should retire from playing tennis if he is unable to deal with the pressures of the sport, after hearing about the young sensation's antics in his Netflix docu-series Toni Nadal, the uncle and former coach of tennis legend Rafael Nadal, suggested that Carlos Alcaraz should quit tennis if he can't cope with the sport's pressures. Speaking on the Nude Project podcast, Toni discussed his nephew's retirement before turning his attention to Alcaraz's Netflix docu-series, which revealed his off-court life, including a party trip to Ibiza weeks before Wimbledon. Alcaraz said in the series: "I ended up going and they know what I'm going there to do. In Ibiza, I'm not going to lie, it's pretty much all about partying and going out. "I basically went there to reventar [literally, 'burst' in Spanish], I'm not sure if that's the best way to put it, but I went there to go out." Despite not having watched the show, Toni didn't hold back in his critique of the world No. 2's behaviour, saying: "If it is too much for him, then he should quit tennis. I understand things differently in life. "In the world of sports, everything tends to be exaggerated. I've often heard about the sacrifice in sports, the sacrifices made by Real Madrid athletes, and I would say: 'Sacrifice?' "Life is about making choices, not just doing what I want. Sometimes it's worth it for people, and sometimes it's not. If it's not worth it for you, it's better to change jobs." He added (via the Express): "I hope Alcaraz doesn't change jobs because he's one of the best in the world, but one has to take on the challenge. "One must accept that things in life will involve a series of compromises. I don't talk about sacrifices because I think that sacrifice is what you do for others. "When you do it for yourself, it's the price you have to pay. Alcaraz, being a great tennis player, indeed pays a price. "But on the other hand, he earns much more money than the vast majority of young people his age, has much greater social recognition, and experiences things that few people do... but if it's not worth it for you, better make a decision." Alcaraz has already amassed an enviable collection of Grand Slam titles, including two Wimbledon victories, a French Open, and a US Open. And while there have been comparisons between Alcaraz and Nadal - who secured 22 Grand Slams during his glorious career - there is still work to be done before the two can truly be compared. Alcaraz has his eyes set on another title this May as he continues to wow at Roland Garros. Following victories over Giulio Zeppieri, Fabian Marozsan, Damir Dzumhur and Ben Shelton, the 22-year-old has reached the quarter-finals. To move into the semis, Alcaraz needs a win over the world's current No. 12, Tommy Paul. Tennis fans can watch Alcaraz and Paul go head-to-head at 7:15pm at the Court Philippe-Chatrier on Tuesday.

'Excellent looking watch! Great shine, perfect case size and good weight.' With Father's Day just around the corner, a watch can be a quality gift to give your loved ones that is both practical and heartfelt. What's better is that Debenhams is holding a massive sale on many popular timepieces so you won't need to break the bank. One issue that can arise when buying a watch is that the style may be perfect, but your preferred colour is not part of the advertised selection. If this is a common issue shoppers encounter, we have found a watch that has six different colourways available. The STÜHRLING Original Lineage Classic 42mm Quartz Watch normally retails for £720, but shoppers can snatch it up for £78.75 after a massive 89 per cent discount. Finished off with a 20mm stainless steel link bracelet, this timepiece is said to provide "sharp looks and supreme comfort". As mentioned, this watch is available in six colourways on the Debenhams website. One happy watch lover said: "This a very stylish watch and is great for dress and casual. A dead ringer for that expensive watch that begins with an 'R', but I don't need to mortgage my home to own it!" Another shopper agreed, writing: "The watch looks amazing, the first time wearing it, I had so many compliments and multiple people asking is that a Rolex; it just kept shining on your wrist during the whole meeting. Great purchase." However, a third shopper wasn't pleased with the size of the watch. They said: "The watch is fine but the strap is VERY large. My husband is 6'1" and we had to have a jeweler take a full inch out of it which was a nuisance." Fashion deal of the week In need of new trainers, but don't want to pay Skechers prices. Then these STQ Women's Slip-On Trainers are said to be "much better" than the famed brand. Even better, they are currently priced from just £30.99 on Amazon. The flexible knitted material features an elastic cuff, making them easy to pop on and take off, while the wide fit fabric has been designed to make it feel like you are wearing nothing on your feet. Crafted with over 1,000 ventilation holes, they ensure that feet don't get to sweaty during wear, while the memory foam insole provides good arch support, making it feel "like walking on air". Available to buy in sizes three through to eight, shoppers can select from eight colours including black, grey and pink. However, it's worth noting that the £30.99 price-tag is available on the black colourway. With the STQ Trainers posing the cheapest price-tag, shoppers might be happy to hear that they have earned a 4.4 rating based on over 5,000 Amazon reviews that suggest they are "light as a feather" and "really comfortable". One delighted shopper said: "Super lightweight, comfortable and a fab colour pink. Much better all round than the Skechers I bought at four times the price! Your feet will love these." Whereas, another reviewer wasn't happy with the quality: "It's a nice looking watch but unfortunately it doesn't feel as good as it looks, I'd say it feels like a Seconda" Despite this, a five-star reviewer commented: "Excellent looking watch! Great shine, perfect case size and good weight. Great watch for the price!!!" With a further shopper praising: "I have a Stuhrling watch for many years and love it so I decided to buy one for my husband as a surprise and he loves it. He has worn it since the day he received. I would buy again." Click HERE to buy the STÜHRLING Original Lineage Classic 42mm Quartz Watch. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Department Q inspired by series of films that left fans ‘glued to the screen'
Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info Fans of Department Q who have been captivated by this gripping new Netflix thriller should head over to Prime Video for more. Matthew Goode stars as the brilliant but self-absorbed detective Carl Morck, assigned to delve into cold cases in a gloomy basement office to bolster the reputation of Edinburgh's police department. Meanwhile, his colleagues upstairs grapple with a seemingly random shooting that has left a rookie officer dead and Carl's partner paralysed. The first nine-part series has garnered glowing reviews from Netflix subscribers since its release at the end of May this year. However, viewers who haven't paid close attention to the credits might be taken aback to discover that the thriller isn't entirely original, reports the Express. (Image: NETFLIX) In fact, it draws its inspiration from a collection of 10 Danish Nordic crime novels known as Afdeling Q, penned by author Jussi Adler-Olsen. These were subsequently transformed into an ongoing series of films, starting in 2013, with four more instalments yet to be released. Fans of the Scottish adaptation by Scott Frank and Chandni Lakhani can celebrate, as the first three entries in the original series, The Keeper of Lost Causes, The Absent One and A Conspiracy of Faith, are currently available to stream on Viaplay UK via Amazon Prime. If you're still not convinced, take a look at some of the rave reviews of the first film which thriller enthusiasts insist is well worth a watch. A Google reviewer was effusive, saying: "Please watch this series. It is mind-blowing to see how much engaging the story is. Definitely a better one. I'll give it 9/10." Another was equally enthusiastic: "One of the most suspenseful movies I have seen recently. The characters are flawless, real and gutsy." (Image: Nordisk Film) Yet another viewer was captivated: "The concept of the movie is gripping and keeps you glued until the very end of the movie. Danish suspense/murder mystery movies must get more traction worldwide. "This was one of those movies which has almost all elements, stellar acting, magnificent story, excellent editing, great screenplay and direction." Another viewer couldn't hold back their praise: "One of the best crime thrillers ever made. You'll never be disappointed watching this." While Netflix has yet to confirm plans for a second season of Department Q, fans of thrillers shouldn't miss this gripping show. Department Q is available to stream on Netflix. Watch the original Department Q films on Viaplay via Amazon Prime.
