CAIRO – 20 June 2025: On World Refugee Day, commemorated annually on June 20, Egypt joins the international community in honoring the resilience of millions forced to flee their homes in search of safety and dignity. The day serves as a reminder of the global refugee crisis and a renewed call for solidarity with both displaced persons and the communities that host them.
Egypt has long been a safe haven for individuals fleeing conflict, persecution, and hardship. Today, the country hosts more than 10 million refugees, asylum seekers, and migrants from 62 different nationalities. In 2024, Egypt ranked second globally in the number of asylum applications submitted.
Egypt's approach to refugee protection is rooted in respect for human dignity. It guarantees refugees and asylum seekers freedom of movement, access to basic services, and opportunities for integration—on par with Egyptian citizens. This inclusive policy reflects Egypt's continued commitment to its international obligations and humanitarian principles.
Against a backdrop of worsening global crises and military escalations—particularly in the Middle East—Egypt emphasizes that international cooperation remains the only viable path to effectively and sustainably address refugee challenges. The growing scale and complexity of displacement underscore the need for equitable burden and responsibility sharing.
In December 2024, Egypt became the first country in North Africa to adopt a dedicated legal framework on asylum by enacting the Foreign Asylum Law. On this occasion, Egypt reiterates the urgent need to mobilize international resources to support host countries in maintaining and enhancing the services provided to both refugees and their host communities.
Furthermore, Egypt stresses the importance of a comprehensive approach to refugee issues—one that integrates humanitarian response with long-term development strategies to bolster the resilience of host communities. This must be accompanied by efforts to address the root causes of displacement through peace-building and conflict resolution initiatives, helping to create the conditions necessary for the voluntary, safe, and dignified return of refugees.
Egypt reaffirms its commitment to continued cooperation with international organizations, especially the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), and to advancing its efforts at regional and international levels in support of peace, development, and the protection of displaced populations.

OPEN// Egypt reaffirms call for holistic approach to refugee issues

CAIRO, June 20 (MENA) - Egypt has emphasized the importance of addressing refugee issues through a comprehensive approach that balances both humanitarian and development dimensions. Such a strategy aims to enhance the resilience of host communities while simultaneously supporting peace efforts that tackle the root causes of displacement in refugees' countries of origin, helping to create conditions for safe, voluntary, and dignified return and preventing the recurrence of crises, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement Friday marking World Refugee Day. Egypt reaffirmed its commitment to continued cooperation with international organizations concerned with refugee affairs, particularly the UNHCR, and its ongoing efforts at the regional and international levels to support conflict resolution, peacebuilding, and sustainable development. The ministry said Egypt has long served as a safe haven for those forced to leave their homes under dire circumstances. Currently, the country hosts 10 million refugees, asylum seekers, and migrants from 62 different nationalities, and continues to uphold its international obligations in this regard, it added. Egypt ranked second globally in the number of asylum applications filed in 2024, the statement said. The country adopts a dignity-centered policy toward refugees and asylum seekers, ensuring freedom of movement and access to basic services comparable to those provided to Egyptian citizens, thereby facilitating their integration into society, it added. In a global context marked by escalating crises and armed conflicts, particularly in the Middle East, with refugee numbers reaching unprecedented levels worldwide, Egypt stressed that international cooperation remains the only effective and sustainable path to address refugee issues in all their dimensions. The ministry also highlighted that with the adoption of Egypt's first national asylum law in December 2024 as the first North African country to pass such legislation. Cairo reiterates the need to intensify global efforts to ensure fair and sustainable implementation of burden- and responsibility-sharing principles, including by mobilizing necessary resources to support host countries in sustaining and enhancing services provided to refugees and host communities alike, the statement concluded. China evacuates 119 citizens from Israel to Egypt - Foreign Affairs

China evacuated 119 Chinese citizens from Israel to Egypt on Thursday via the Taba border crossing in Egypt's South Sinai governorate, Chinese News agency Xinhua reported. According to Xinhua, the evacuees entered Egypt from the crossing around 15:30 local time (12:30 GMT) and were then guided onto buses after completing the necessary procedures. The group included 117 students and two Hong Kong residents, who will be transferred to Cairo, the embassy said. "China is highly concerned about our compatriots overseas. Their well-being and safety are always our priority," Xinhua quoted Chinese Ambassador to Egypt Liao Liqiang. "We completed all preparatory work efficiently within 24 hours and dispatched an action group to Taba overnight to organize the process of entry," Liao said. He added that the embassy worked closely with the Egyptian government overnight to request passage permits, necessary assistance, and security guarantees. Sun Xue, a postdoctoral fellow at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, said that the journey from Jerusalem to the Taba border crossing took about four hours. He noted that during the entry process at the crossing, staff and volunteers from the Chinese embassy in Egypt provided assistance and coordination. 'We are truly grateful to them," Sun said. China is the latest country to use the Taba border as a safe exodus path for its citizens from Israel, after Poland, France, Slovakia and the Czech Republic, following the Iranian retaliation on Israeli attacks. Egypt FM speaks with US, Iranian officials amid Israel-Iran escalation - Foreign Affairs

Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty held separate phone calls on Thursday with US Middle East envoy Steven Witkoff and Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. This marked the second such discussions in four days as the military escalation between Israel and Iran entered its second week with no immediate solution in sight. According to a statement from the Egyptian Foreign Ministry, the calls are in line with directives from President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi to intensify diplomatic efforts aimed at containing the military escalation between Israel and Iran. During the two calls, Minister Abdelatty reaffirmed the urgent need to de-escalate tensions, enforce a ceasefire, and make full use of available diplomatic channels to contain the rapidly deteriorating situation and avert a wider regional crisis. He stressed the importance of preventing the conflict from spreading and dragging the region into full-scale chaos with consequences no one would be immune to. Abdelatty reiterated Egypt's stance on pursuing every diplomatic and political avenue to reach a sustainable agreement on Iran's nuclear program. On Tuesday, Badr Abdelatty urged de-escalation and the pursuit of diplomatic solutions in separate phone calls with Araghchi and Witkoff. Follow us on: Facebook Instagram Whatsapp Short link:
