SMU Football Preview 2025: The Mustangs Are Built To Do It Again
Well that last season, SMU hadn't won a regular season game against a Power Five-now-Power-Four program against anyone by TCU since an all-time bet-on-yourself move, SMU became a part of the ACC, but without taking a dime of TV revenue until 2032. It was looking to raise the school's profile with a long-term plan, and it helped get the alumni fired up and ready to write and Cal were the higher-profile gets for the ACC, SMU was expected to be a nice scrimmage for the established programs, and then ... probably didn't belong in the expanded College Football Playoff - technically, a case could've been made for BYU instead with an 18-15 win over the Mustangs in Dallas - but let's start with this. If last year at this exact time, you were told SMU would be in the CFP discussion ... X CFN, Fiu | CFN Facebook | Bluesky Fiu, CFN2025 SMU PreviewSMU Offense BreakdownSMU Defense BreakdownSeason Prediction, Win Total, Keys to SeasonSMU almost pulled off a thriller of a comeback in a 34-31 loss to Clemson in the ACC Championship, and it got its shot. In the ten years of the College Football Playoff, no two-loss Power Five/Four program would've been left out of an expanded 12-team model - it had to be done. SMU had to be what that the Mustangs were outplayed and outclassed in a blowout loss at Penn State. They made it. Everything the school could've dreamed of came true. SMU made the (bleep)ing College Football Playoff. Texas A&M hasn't done that. Neither has Baylor, Texas Tech, or Houston. Take it outside of the football-mad state - Wisconsin, Florida, Ole Miss, Auburn, Missouri, USC, Utah, and Iowa have yet to make the last year, Penn State and Tennessee hadn't been in, it wasn't a fluke. Okay, so the ACC was fourth among the Power Four conferences by about a gajillion miles. SMU hung up 66 on TCU, walloped Florida State 42-16, took out a good Louisville squad, and in all, beat six teams that went bowling, and again, almost took out Clemson. All head coach Rhett Lashlee has done is go 22-6 over the last two seasons and 29-12 since taking the job in recruiting class was terrific, the staff kept around everyone important, crushed the transfer portal for key positions, the depth is better, and the starting 22 will be more talented than last year's schedule is tougher - Florida State will likely rebound, Miami is on the slate this time around, and good luck with those road trips to TCU and Clemson - and the team will be the hunted, but after last year, you're insane to think SMU can't do it all again. Alan Page's foundation honors Jim Marshall with expansion of scholarship
Vikings legend Jim Marshall was a champion for young people. Now fellow Vikings legend Alan Page is honoring Marshall's legacy through an expansion of coverage for scholarship recipients. In the wake of Marshall's death, the Page Education Foundation announced that those that receive the Page Grant can use it to cover the full cost of attendance starting this fall. Previously, the Page Grant only could be used to cover the cost of tuition. In a release, Page noted how Marshall believed in lifting up others throughout his life, adding, 'Expanding this grant is a way we continue to honor that belief and ensure the next generation can rise.' The expansion specifically allows scholarship recipients to use the Page Grant for college expenses including housing, meals, transportation, books and childcare. 'In the face of shifting national conversations about equity in education, we're choosing to stay grounded in our mission,' executive director Amanda Moua said in a release. 'This expansion ensures our scholars receive support that truly meets the realities they face in college today.' Minnesota Vikings Legend Jim Marshall Passes Away
The Minnesota Vikings are the greatest team in NFL history to never win the Lombardi Trophy. They've played in 53 playoff games (21-32), 10 conference championships (4-6) and our Super Bowls (0-4). Yet, since the AFL/NFL merger in 1961 (Super Bowl era), the 65-year-old Vikings have never been to climb the ultimate NFL mountain. The closest they ever came were all from the same Purple People Eaters era from 1968 to 1978, when the Minnesota Vikings made the playoffs in 10 of 11 seasons, a run that included all four of the team's Super Bowl runs, to date — three of which were lead by legendary head coach Bud Grant and the greatest QB in franchise history, Fran Tarkenton. Credit: Manny Rubio-Imagn Images One player who was around for all eleven of those seasons — and responsible for a large chunk of their success during the 60s and 70s — was Minnesota Vikings Ring of Honor member out of Ohio State, Jim Marshall — whose 19 seasons in purple long ago got the Ironman's number (70) retired. Minnesota Vikings All-Time Great Jim Marshall Dies at Age 87 Unfortunately, the Vikings announced on Tuesday that Marshall has passed away at the age of 87 years old. In his 20 total years in the NFL (played one year in Cleveland), the all-time great Purple People Eater played in 282 games, including 270-straight starts, racking 120.5 sacks, good for 22nd all time. 'On behalf of his cherished wife, Susan, it is with heavy hearts and an abundant gratitude for the joy he brought to the franchise and region, that the Minnesota Vikings announce Marshall passed away Tuesday at the age of 87, following a lengthy hospitalization. Beyond athletic prowess, Marshall's legacy is one of an enduring and endearing spirit and deep generosity. His exuberance positively affected countless others, and his memory will continue to inspire. A celebration of his life will be planned.' Minnesota Vikings Advertisement The vaunted Minnesota Vikings defensive line of the 60s and 70s — which included Marshall, Alan Page, Gary Larsen and Gopher great Carl Eller — remains one of the best in league history, right up there with the Rams' 'Fearsome Foursome' and the Steelers' 'Steel Curtain', of that same era. Marshall will be sorely missed Jim Marshall was as much a contributor off the field for the Minnesota Vikings and in the local community as he was off on it back in the day. Much like his Purple People Eater linemates, Marshall is someone all corners of the fanbase celebrated and rallied around. Over the past couple of seasons at U.S. Bank Stadium, the pre-game introduction video has featured a defense of the frigid north and highlighted greats of yesteryear. It's impossible to think about the franchise and not consider The Purple People Eaters. Advertisement Related: Justin Jefferson Reveals Why He Attended Minnesota Vikings OTAs It's inexplicable that he's still yet to make the Hall of Fame. Former Minnesota Vikings head coach Bud Grant was vocal about that until he passed. It should have happened sooner, and now, if Marshall does get in, it will be too late for him to see it, in person. It stands to reason that Minnesota will find a way to honor Jim Marshall this season. His number 70 is one of six retired by the organization. I can imagine there will be a jersey patch or, at least something on Vikings helmets this season, in order to commemorate Marshall and everything he has meant to the Minnesota Vikings.
