Pakistan's Chief of Army Staff Munir is reportedly said to arrive in Washington DC to attend the 250th anniversary celebrations of the US Army , Pakistan's The News has reported. The invitation for this visit came from his American counterpart, and the event is scheduled for Saturday, June 14, which also coincides with US President Donald Trump's birthday. This visit comes only weeks after a conflict between India and Pakistan following New Delhi's Operation Sindoor, a retaliation to the Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 lives. Munir's forthcoming visit to the US for the commemorative event has raised eyebrows following the recent tensions between the two Asian giants.Meanwhile, Trump has also claimed to have brokered peace between India and Pakistan while New Delhi has cleared it multiple times that an 'understanding' was reached by the DGMOs of the two countries. Moreover, it has been alleged that Munir had a part to play in the April 22 attack. He was also promoted to the ceremonial rank of Field Marshal, which marks only the second time in Pakistan's history that a military officer has reached this rarefied rank. The elevation is said to have came in recognition of his role in the recent military face-off with India.Earlier yesterday, a top US general said that the United States has to have a relationship with Pakistan and with India, noting that it cannot be a 'binary switch' where Washington cannot have ties with Islamabad if it has relations with New Delhi.Commander of US Central Command (CENTCOM), US Army General Michael Kurilla, made the comments during a testimony before the US House Armed Services Committee on Tuesday.'We have to have a relationship with Pakistan and with India. I do not believe it is a binary switch that we can't have one with Pakistan if we have a relationship with India,' Kurilla said. 'We should look at the merits of the relationship for the positives that it has.'Kurilla's comments came days after an all-party Indian Parliamentary delegation led by Shashi Tharoor visited the US to convey India's strong resolve to combat terrorism backed by Pakistan in the wake of the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 lives.'ISIS Khorasan (ISIS K) is perhaps one of the most active in trying to do external plots globally to include against the homeland. The Taliban is going after ISIS K - they hate each other, and have pushed a lot of them into the tribal areas on the Afghan-Pakistan border,' he said at the full Committee Hearing on 'US Military Posture and National Security Challenges AFRICOM + CENTCOM.''Through a phenomenal partnership with Pakistan, they have gone after ISIS Khorasan, killing dozens of them. Through a relationship we have with them providing intelligence, they have captured at least five ISIS Khorasan high value individuals.'The 250th anniversary celebrations will include a large-scale parade and festival in Washington. According to reports, around 6,600 soldiers will participate in the parade, which will also showcase approximately 150 military vehicles and over 50 aircraft. The United States last hosted a military parade in 1991 to mark the end of the Gulf War. The National Victory Parade at that time featured nearly 8,000 service members, and about 2,00,000 spectators gathered to witness the event. The Washington Post reported that the parade cost USD 8 million.

'Explosions across Tehran': Visuals capture Israel's preemptive strike on Iran; watch video
Visuals from Iran showed smoke billowing from multiple areas in Iran early on Friday as Israel launched an attack, with explosions resonating throughout Tehran. The strikes targeted nuclear and military installations. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Tehran residents woke to explosions. State television acknowledged the incident. Smoke was visible near Chitgar, western Tehran. No known nuclear facilities exist there, with situation unclear elsewhere. While there is still uncertainty surrounding the extent of damage, Iran's primary nuclear enrichment facility was reportedly targetted at Natanz. The Natanz facility consists of both above-ground and underground sections, housing numerous centrifuge halls for uranium gas enrichment in its nuclear programme. Israeli Prime Minister confirmed Israel's responsibility for Friday's attack on the site. Natanz has previously experienced the Stuxnet cyberattack and several suspected Israeli sabotage operations. Iranian state television reports suggest the leader of Iran's Revolutionary Guard Gen. Hossein Salami may have perished in the Israeli strike. The broadcast indicated that another senior Guard official and two nuclear scientists were also possibly deceased. State television reported the attack ignited the Revolutionary Guard headquarters. Netanyahu confirmed multiple targets in the capital, including nuclear and military installations, along with officials overseeing Iran's nuclear and ballistic missile programmes. This escalation follows mounting tensions regarding Iran's nuclear programme advancement. The International Atomic Energy Agency's Board of Governors censured Iran on Thursday, their first such action in 20 years, regarding cooperation with inspectors. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Iran responded by announcing plans for a third enrichment facility and upgrading centrifuges. Israel has consistently opposed Iran developing nuclear weapons, which Tehran maintains it does not intend to do, despite officials suggesting capability. The US has taken precautionary measures, withdrawing some diplomats from Iraq and offering evacuation options to US military families in the region. Netanyahu stated via YouTube that operations would continue "for as many days at it takes to remove this threat." US secretary of state Marco Rubio confirmed Israel's independent action, noting they deemed it necessary for self-defence. "We are not involved in strikes against Iran and our top priority is protecting American forces in the region," Rubio's White House statement declared. Rubio cautioned Iran against targeting US interests or personnel. Brent crude prices increased nearly 5% following the attack. Israel's Defence Minister Israel Katz acknowledged the operation without specifying targets. "In the wake of the state of Israel's preventive attack against Iran, missile and drone attacks against Israel and its civilian population are expected immediately," his statement read. Katz "signed a special order declaring an emergency situation in the home front." "It is essential to listen to instructions from the home front command and authorities to stay in protected areas," it continued. Both nations closed their airspace. During the Tehran explosions, President Donald Trump socialised with Congress members at the White House. His awareness remained unclear as he continued greeting guests. Trump had previously urged Netanyahu to delay action while diplomatic negotiations continued. "As long as I think there is a (chance for an) agreement, I don't want them going in because I think it would blow it," Trump told reporters.

Oil soars more than 9% after Israel strikes Iran, rattling investors
Oil prices surged more than 9% on Friday (June 13, 2025), hitting their highest in almost five months after Israel struck Iran, dramatically escalating tensions in the Middle East and raising worries about disrupted oil supplies. Brent crude futures jumped $6.29, or 9.07%, to $75.65 a barrel by 0315 GMT after hitting an intraday high of $78.50, the highest since January 27. U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude was up $6.43, or 9.45%, at $74.47 a barrel after hitting a high of $77.62, the loftiest since January 21. Israel strikes Iran LIVE: Military official says nuclear targets hit; explosions heard across Tehran Friday's gains were the largest intraday moves for both contracts since 2022 after Russia invaded Ukraine, causing energy prices to spike. Israel said it targeted Iran's nuclear facilities, ballistic missile factories and military commanders on Friday at the start of what it warned would be a prolonged operation to prevent Tehran from building an atomic weapon. "This has elevated geopolitical uncertainty significantly and requires the oil market to price in a larger risk premium for any potential supply disruptions," ING analysts led by Warren Patterson said in a note. Several oil traders in Singapore said it was still too early to say if the strike will affect Middle East oil shipments as it will depend on how Iran retaliates and if the U.S. will intervene. "It's too early to tell but I think the market is worried about shutting off of the Strait of Hormuz," one of the traders said. MST Marquee senior energy analyst Saul Kavonic said the conflict would need to escalate to the point of Iranian retaliation on oil infrastructure in the region before oil supply is materially impacted. He added that Iran could hinder up to 20 million barrels per day of oil supply via attacks on infrastructure or limiting passage through the Strait of Hormuz, in an extreme scenario. Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said Israel will receive "harsh punishment" following Friday's attack that he said killed several military commanders. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Thursday called Israel's strikes against Iran a "unilateral action" and said Washington was not involved while also urging Tehran not to target U.S. interests or personnel in the region. "Iran has announced an emergency and is preparing to retaliate, which raises the risk of not just disruptions but of contagion in other neighbouring oil producing nations too," said Priyanka Sachdeva, senior market analyst at Phillip Nova. "Although Trump has shown reluctance to participate, U.S. involvement could further raise concerns." In other markets, stocks dived in early Asian trade, led by a selloff in U.S. futures, while investors scurried to safe havens such as gold and the Swiss franc.
