Strengthen Family Institution For National Development
GENERAL
KUALA LUMPUR, May 18 (Bernama) -- The family institution, as a key pillar of national development, must continue to be strengthened through sustainable family-oriented policies, said Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.
The Prime Minister's wife, who is also Bandar Tun Razak Member of Parliament, said the erosion of family values must be addressed to ensure social sustainability and holistic human development.
'The world today is witnessing the family unit shrinking from extended to nuclear families, while neighbourly bonds and community spirit are fading.
'This is why we must revive the spirit of kinship. National policies should always place the family institution as the core of development,' she said at the Bandar Tun Razak Family Day programme in conjunction with Mother's Day celebration at Taman Tasik Permaisuri here today.
She noted that the theme for the International Day of Families -- Family-Oriented Policies for Sustainable Development -- aligns with the Malaysia MADANI Agenda, which upholds the family as the foundation of a stable, inclusive and prosperous society.
'Under Malaysia MADANI, emphasis is placed on human capital development where strengthening families and communities is key, not just fiscal development,' she said.
Dr Wan Azizah also called for broader implementation of policies and initiatives to empower women and mothers, including the National Women's Policy and the Women's Development Action Plan 2025-2030 led by the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry.
These include entrepreneurship training, healthcare assistance, support for women's participation in the gig economy and subsidies for HPV screening and mammograms.
Over 500 families participated in today's event, organised by the Kuala Lumpur National Population and Family Development Board (LPPKN), Kuala Lumpur City Hall and the Bandar Tun Razak MP's Office.

No details from China after Trump announces "done" trade deal
BEIJING: (Bernama-dpa) The United States and China have made progress in resolving differences on their economies and trade, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian said in Beijing on Thursday (June 12) without providing details, German Press Agency (dpa) reported. Lin was speaking after US President Donald Trump said that a trade agreement that would include Chinese supplies of magnets and critical rare earth minerals had almost been finalised. Lin said China hoped that the two sides could work together to implement the consensus agreed in London. Trump announced an agreement on Wednesday on his Truth Social platform. "Our deal with China is done, subject to final approval with President Xi and me," Trump posted after US and Chinese negotiating teams wrapped up two days of talks in London. "Full magnets, and any necessary rare earths, will be supplied, up front, by China. Likewise, we will provide to China what was agreed to, including Chinese students using our colleges and universities (which has always been good with me!)," he posted. Trump also said there had been a deal on tariffs, with US tariffs on imports from China at 55 per cent and Chinese reciprocal tariffs at 10 per cent. Following talks in London on Monday and Tuesday, delegates said they planned to implement the consensus agreed in Geneva in mid-May, where agreement was reached to cut import tariffs by 115 percentage points on both sides for a period of 90 days. Details of the Geneva and London agreements have not been released, with US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick saying in London that the text of the agreement would not be published. - Bernama-dpa

High-profile cases now wrapped up in six months
One of the main factors that enabled the shorter investigation period was the improvement of investigation modules and systems by reviewing outdated elements in the commission's procedures. 12 Jun 2025 05:06pm MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki during a press conference after the second Convocation Ceremony of the MACC's Certified Law Enforcement Programme, today. - Photo by Bernama BANGI - The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has shortened the investigation period for high-profile cases from one and a half years to just six months, thanks to the implementation of new approaches, including upskilling officers and utilising the latest technology. MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said one of the main factors that enabled the shorter investigation period was the improvement of investigation modules and systems by reviewing outdated elements in the commission's procedures. "In the past, one high-profile case could take us about one and a half years to complete the investigation papers, but now we can complete them within six months. Secondly, we enhance our officers' skills and knowledge. "About 10 years ago, we needed to dispatch many officers to conduct surveillance. But now, we just use technology to locate suspects and witnesses. So, in a very short period, we can locate the suspect or the person we want to find,' he said. In addition, Azam said the MACC has also established strategic collaborations with external parties to strengthen its investigation capabilities, especially in technical aspects and financial forensics. He said international cooperation also plays a vital role, particularly in tracing and recovering assets located abroad. "We also collaborate with many parties. For example, our collaboration with the Malaysian Institute of Accountants helps us with asset tracing and forensic accounting," he said. On the need to increase staffing, Azam said that although there was a rise in the number of reports from 2020 to April 2025, totalling 34,819, mass recruitment of MACC officers is not the primary solution to strengthening anti-corruption efforts. "I do not see that adding a large number of MACC officers is the solution to combat corruption in this country. The most important thing is our approach,' he said, adding that during the same period, 5,145 investigation papers were opened, leading to the arrest of 5,703 individuals. He said that out of these arrests, 2,479 individuals were prosecuted and 1,274 were subsequently convicted in court. The MACC also recorded significant financial enforcement outcomes, including the seizure of RM3.54 billion in assets and the forfeiture of an additional RM27.87 billion. At today's convocation, 250 people graduated from the programme, and they have now been appointed as new MACC officers. - BERNAMA
